Background:
5 Publishers are trying to force an new ebook pricing scheme on the industry. Some ebook retailers (fictionwise, BoB) have stopped delivering/selling books for the 5 publishers.

The timing seems to correspond with the release of the IPad. Apple has touted the IPad as a reader.

- Will this hurt IPad sales?

- Is this an attempt by the publishers to force Apple's book store to fall in line with the new publishing model?

It's an attempt by the publishers to force other stores to the new model. Apple was, if anything, the catalyst for this change.

More likely that the ipad is seen by them as a larger single competitor for amazon and the kindle than it has had in the past, thus reducing the overall power amazon has in the ebook market.

That may backfire on Apple. The hype was IPad as platform for ebooks. Many consumers might not differentiate between platforms/sellers and decide not to purchase IPad because there is a question about getting content.
