View Full Version : BookDesigner update
It certainly is. If you do switch from "keep original format" to "reformat completely", be aware that the two can (and often do) give very different results. I've had input files were one of those options produced a Book Designer file that would have taken hours to clean up, while the other allowed me to have the conversion done in ten to fifteen minutes.
I'm afraid that setting language to "german" and format options to "keep original format" still deletes all "œ" in the text. I guess I should work with "re-format completely" settings...

How do you have oe in your file? I do not have a problem with oe as long as it is just plain text. Before you load your file, if you can, replace all œ with oe and you'll be fine. No need to have œ instead of oe. Of course, you can try Book Cleaner to fix œ into oe on load.
Patricia 03-10-2008, 05:48 PM I think that one can have 'œ 'in old spellings (e.g. œconomy, fœtid, fœtus etc)). I usually search for the œ and ae characters and change them to two separate letters 'oe' and 'ae'. And I do this in the source document before I drop it into BD.

I wish I was more consistent in my practices. I have done it both ways. I try to always make AE one character if it was that way in the original text. At least I think I have been consistent within each book. (hope, keep fingers crossed)

I have an RTF document.
I'm reading in french and that's why I have so many o those characters. I'd like to keep them if possible.

If you fix the text so you end up with oe you can then do a search/replace on oe and turn it back into œ.
Thank you.
I'd like BD to do that for me, coz there may be some other special characters that don't come to mind right now and may turn to be possible "annoyances" while reading the ebook.
Anyway, it's not a big deal. Thnx

I tried to go to those linked pages, but they don't open.
Neither IE or Firefox were able to open them.
Has the location changed?
Are the links broken?

Thank you !!

I can't seem to get it to create a book.
I dropped an HTML file into Book Designer,
Entered the information in the "make file" window,
And then clicked on "Make Book."
It processes a bit,
Then I get a pop-up that reads:
File is locked by 'default owner'
Do you want to:
* Open a Read Only Copy
* Created a Local copy & Merge your changes later
* Receive notification when the original copy is available."
No matter what I choose, it opens & freezes MS WORD.
Then after I close Word, there is a new Book Designer Pop-up that reads:
"Cannot Create PDF."
What am I doing wrong? :dunce:

Patricia 03-15-2008, 05:52 AM Have you installed BD properly? You need to install BD4 then 5 on top of it.

I downloaded & installed the files gwynevans mentioned in her post
Is there a more current update?
Looks like what I downloaded is version 4.
The update link in the program goes to a webpage that is down.
Where can I find 5?
Rico
Ok, I downloaded OpenOffice (since so many people seem to like it).
Then changed the printer option to OpenOffice and BD was able to create the PDF. Apparently, it didn't like PDFCreator.

If you first install BD4 then the update, you get BD5 (Check the Help dialogs).

Ooopppss ... So Sorry !!!
I read your Name as Gwen (as in short for Gwenivere) :embarasse
I installed BD4 then unzipped the update over the BD4 folder.
The program still calls itself BD4.

Patricia 03-16-2008, 08:00 AM Yes, it does that on all the file and folder titles. Open BD and click on 'Help! then on 'Book Designer Main Help'. If you have BD5 it will be headed 'Book Designer 5'.
astra 01-31-2009, 06:25 AM What you have to do is go to File -> Print. Select Adobe PDF and print it to a new document.
For some reason, I don't have pdf printer....why is that? Any idea?
[EDIT]
The problems is solved.
Thanks again for priceless advice.

Have you managed to get hold of 'Book Designer 5'? Every time I see a link to download it, the link is dead.
HarryT 02-03-2009, 07:37 AM The links in the "Bookdesigner Files and How to Install" sticky thread in the "Workshop" forum work for everyone else. I'm slightly baffled by why they aren't working for you!
