Hello everyone, this is my very first posting here, but I've been reading here for months.

I registered to ask a question - has anyone since bothered to hack the Embiid Reader software to convert the files to some other (readable on a Sony Reader) format? Or, failing that, is anyone aware of whether or not you can install the Embiid Reader software on the Sony reader, and work with it that way?

I have most (if not all) of the Liaden books from them and I'd love to be able to read it on the reader I plan to purchase tomorrow!!

Thanks in advance :crowngrin

I haven't heard of the Embiid Reader before. Looks like they are out of business (http://www.embiid.net/) now.

The rights for all our books have reverted to their authors. It would be illegal for us to sell "just one more." We are very sorry if you missed our earlier warning and consequently didn't get to purchase a book you wanted, but there's really nothing we can do about it now. We are out of business. We do not sell books anymore.

This site will remain (in a minimally functional state) until December 31, 2006. The only reason for that is so that people have ample opportunity to download and back up the books they purchased when we had the right to sell them. We cannot sell them anymore. We are out of business.

I know they're out of business, that's why I wanted to know if anyone had done it. My e-book reader is FABULOUS and I'd love to read everything on it. And since they're out of business, they shouldn't mind too much if I can continue to use the content I paid for, right?

I'd need an Embeiid .ebk file and, probably, the reader software which can open it.

Igorsk, you should have e-mail. However, it definitely pinged me back a few times saying there was an illegal attachment, so I broke up the files into 2 or 3 separate mailings. If you haven't received them, let me know on here and we'll work out another way for me to get you those files. Thanks for being willing to try it anyway!! (and I thought this thread was dead after all this time!!)

I've got the files and can read them. If I get anything working I'll post it here too.

It is the authors who own the copyright, not the Embiid people, so what they want or mind is of no consequence.

It is what the authors (or their original publishers) want which matters, so contact the authors and explain what has happened and see if they will be willing to send you at no charge a version that can work on your Sony Reader. If the author says it's out of his/her control, contact the publisher.

Some may be helpful, some may just say "So what - it's not our problem, buy the version for your Sony! If you had bought a paper book and it became unreadable because you dropped it in a lake or lost it or it fell in a fire or was stolen, we'd have no responsibility to replace it. Why would this be different?"

I'm a bit busy with something else right now so I decided to release what I have so far. This script allows to convert Embiid books to HTML, which then can be converted to LRF with Kovid's HTML2LRF. To convert personalized books, a matching copy of EmbiidReader.exe needs to be present in the current directory.
