Maria S. Cummins [1827–1866]
The Lamplighter [1854]

A Bildungsroman, telling how an abused orphan is adopted by a lamplighter, and learns Christian principles from a blind woman, and then spreads goodness and light to others. The novel uses a lot of metaphors about light.
