We are happy to announce that the forum changes are in place. This pass at forum changes was mainly for the device sections. The goal was to maintain what was working and fill in some missing areas.

To start with there is now a "General Discussions" section. This section was created for those discussion which were about e-books and e-book reading but didn't really fit into a device or software thread. These threads usually ended up in the "News and Commentary" section. You will also see the "News and Commentary" section was renamed to simply be "News" to focus it a bit more.

You will see there is now one category where all E-Book Reader device sections will be found. This includes dedicated devices such as the Kindle and the Sony and non-dedicated devices such as the iPad and the eDGe. The devices are listed in alphabetical order to make them easy to find.

There is a new "More E-Book Readers" section to discuss dedicated e-book reader devices for which there is no section. And grouped under that section are many device specific sub-forums. As discussion in the generic "More" section about a new or coming device become popular a new sub-forum can be added. We value all participation no matter what device you use but we needed a way to keep the forum list from becoming very long and daunting.

In addition the "Other Devices" section is now named "Alternative Devices" for discussion of Netbooks, PDAs, Smartphones etc. Once again, this incubation area will be watched carefully and device or OS specific sub-forums may be created for more popular devices or software.

The very good news is we added the following device sections:

BeBook
enTourage eDGe
iRiver Story
Onyx Boox
Plastic Logic Que
Spring Design Alex

We hope that these changes make everyone happy and will be responding to new forum section request more swiftly since the new organization easily allows it.

Thanks for your patience while we planned all this out. We do appreciate it.

Please enjoy.

Yes! We kept "Alternative Devices"!

It can be hard to slim down when there are so many devices and areas of interest to cover.

I was about to suggest a way people with low vision could zoom the page without the text exceeding the screen. Then it occurred to me that you must have this as an option if I could only find it. So I looked at all of the options again and low and behold I found it.

For those folks on here who like to zoom the screen to increase font size, but are frustrated that the forum and thus text extends past the edge of the screen just go down to the bottom left and change Fixed to Liquid.

Keep up the good work!

This is great! I can see all the links for the e-book reader forums in one screen with no scrolling. Also, I think the device-specific tags are super useful. Great job, and thanks for all the hard work.

One minor quibble. Would you please add "Aluratek Libre Pro" under the Ectaco Jetbook category? Since both readers use the same hardware, the users of both e-readers post in that section. It would enable new users of the Libre to more easily locate information about their e-reader. Thanks.

Sounds reasonable. Done.

something changed such that unless i do a shift/control-reload of the main page, to flush the cache, i get some nonsense about tokens expired and so forth. very annoying.

Bladite

I really can't see this having anything to do with the forum changes.

What is the "main page"? You mean the home page? That pages hasn't changed at all.

i mean http://www.mobileread.com/ in particular, but in general, i'm assuming a session state/cookie issue that changed more globally. i've seen this occur in other websites from time to time. never here though.

Let me start by saying I love MobileRead, I'm always telling people to visit here. The new forum structure makes it easy to find a forum and easier to search.

However, it makes it impossible to browse. I don't come by every day, and the ~7500 threads in the Sony forum (277 pages) are unmanageable. I used to like to browse the new posts on reader accessories and see if someone had found a cute new case. Now those are just part of an unending stream of threads. The top page is all threads with new comments today. Removing all the sub-forums (sub-fora?) makes it harder to see topical things without paging through screen after screen of new entries.

I like getting both Sony halves back together, but it was at a significant cost.

We understand where you are coming from. However, if you had looked at all the threads you will see that there were many threads on accessories and content and troubleshooting in the main thread... so you were missing those.

We can hope that people will start to use the prefixes for device specific topics. You can filter to show only threads with no prefix which are more likely to apply to all devices and be threads on accessories or content or the like.

Try filtering by using the options on the menu ... that should cut down the ones you need to look at as a routine ?

Just a lil FYI in the sony forum. When I try the 505 filter, I get zero results. It looks like the 505 threads did not get tagged.

It is possible _ with a lot of threads pre-change; little time to adjust accordingly ....

That's correct. Because the old section was 500/505... so there was no way to tag them correctly. Also, many of those threads apply to the new devices too.

If you want any pre-reorg threads tagged... just report them and we can add the tags.
