They come in brown, bright-green and pinkish-red. Not an easy choice if you are a guy. So what color did you pick or would you pick if you ordered one now?

I Picked Pink, Hopefully it's closer to a hot pink/Fushia rather than the Red. If I don't like it, I'll probably send it back for the green. :crowngrin

I picked brown because I want to be able to carry it also at work - and pink or lime-green wouldn't look so good in my suitcase ;)

Where's the option for the standard Black cover that comes with it? I plan to stick with it. :)

Me too. I like the black as much as the others. Except if I remember right, the brown one was a little upscale. But I figured I would rather spend the extra bucks on a cradle than another cover!

>Where's the option for the standard Black cover that comes with it?

that would the last option :)

I wonder when (and if) traditional "case" companies like Bellagio, Krussel, Piel Frama, and others will make something for eReader.

Honestly, at the time of the order I didn't know it came with the cover. Well I knew, but I didn't know it was the same $40 cover I was adding to my cart. Oh well. Doesn't hurt to have one for replacement, right?

NatCh

The standard one was some sort of synthetic, as nearly as I could tell. The "designer" ones are leather/suede surfaced, so they're probably worth a bit more. :D

Alexander Turcic

Ah so they are something different. Good then. Feeling less sorry for myself for spending too much money today. ;)

I really do think I noticed that the brown one stood out to me because it looked better quality than the others. But if you don't like "dull" colors (I do personally, but many like to spice things up), the red and green options are probably a must buy item. I can't really see a teen girl putting the black cover in her purse. She'd just have to get red or green I think!

Oh, the covers are definitely marketed toward the female reader. I would pick the pink/green in a heartbeat over the brown and black.

I will go with the standard black one. If I don't like it I will come up with some sort of case myself.

I plan to add large, friendly letters to the black one -- I think they wouldn't stick well to the suede.

For travel/heavy protection, I've hollowed out a book (titled "Wireless" -- how cool is that?). I tried it while we were out there, and fit it quite nicely, cover and all. :beam:

Glue a dust-jacket to the cover, maybe? :happy2:

Bob Russell
09-27-2006, 03:14 PM
Nathan, I think he meant like your converted cutout book!

I saw it Slava, and it was really cool. We worried about the air security angle -- might look too much like a bad spy hideout, but other than that, it really does just look like a book on the outside, and it fits great on the inside. Very nifty, but definitely not for everyone! ;-)

NatCh
09-27-2006, 03:26 PM
I wish I'd taken a pic of it while we were out there. :shame:

I'll just have to do that once I've got something to put in it again.

Yes, I'll probably do something similar, but need to find good cover first. Something classy like "Reading for idiots" or "How to learn to read in 24 hours" :)

I'm waiting for Vaja to come out with a cover (need strong reader sales!).

They make the best cases for PDAs and cell phones. They are pricy but I have never been sorry for a purchase from them.

Is the cover order-able from Sony? I have a few slick LED clip-on lights, but I'm really interested in that sexy brown cover. :)

You can already order it, but it's not available for delivery yet (at least mine isn't, and I picked the brown one too).

Cancelling the order for the cover. I think it would add too much bulk and weight, and I like the black cover.

It will look lovely during long gray cold winter evenings :)

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to clean the cover? The suade is already starting to pick up a bit of dust and other specks.

:bulb2: Sony should market Reader differently - You can read the books and dust the room :)

dab the cover with sticky tape. It should pick up all the bits

Just use one of those microfiber cloths or eyeglass cloth.

How do you take the included cover off? I didn't see anything in the manual regarding this. I pulled and tugged a little, but I didn't want to get too rough and break something. Is it screwed in? Velcro? Thanks.

Bob Russell

It has a round set of slots on the back of the reader, just bigger than a quarter. The cover has the protrusions to match, so it just snaps into place.

To remove it, you can just pull it off.

To attach it, put the reader face down on a flat (non-abrasive) surface and then press the cover onto it. That helps spread the force, and protects the screen.

Slava

@yowzah

He he he, wait till you try to snap it back. This is where the all fun begins :)

It's some kind of plastic lock and one need to pull (and then press) strong enough to detach/attach that cover.

I guess we can all see why they decided to reinforce the back of the device before rollout!

I'm hoping we will see some fancier covers start to appear if it becomes a popular device. GearDiary has a neat picture of a Vaja pda pouch that would be a neat sort of idea for the reader... http://geardiary.com/?p=47

NatCh

The $40 ones are a fancy sueded stuff, the stock one is a nice synthetic, with leatheroid accents along the edges. I find the standard one quite satisfactory. :)

I think I'd probably reccomend waiting 'til you can look the standard one over before deciding whether to fork out for the fancy ones. Unless of course, you have some reason to do so, like you just want to.

The gorgeous little brown leather cover finally shipped! :D Of course, not knowing what month it'd arrive, I just did ground, so even though I'm a five hour drive away from the "Sort Location," it sounds like mine won't arrive until 10/20. At least it shipped 10/12 though -- I'll post pics when I get it!

The Gizmodo link with the closeup screenshots mentioned this case:

Sort of strange looking as it is meant to go over the entire Reader and it has "replacement" buttons on the front, but probably decent for protection. Takes away from the sexy high-tech look a lot though, IMO.

Totally personal taste of course, but that cover looks like spandex for e-book readers! I prefer mine to look somewhat like a 'book' at any rate. On second thought though, if you're taking your reader to the gym this would work great - no floppy covers to get in the way.

When considering covers with different thickness or shape, remember that you will have to remove them before connecting to your computer if you use the Reader docking station.

NatCh
10-16-2006, 10:25 AM
I'm also a bit leery of this "spandex" design as it doesn't appear to offer much impact protection to the display.

This is one of the reasons i'm stalling with the box i'm planning. I don't have access to a reader, and i'd like to be able to plug it without having to take it out. Also does the SD card protrude?

Also does the SD card protrude? The SD card doesn't protrude at all -- it has a cover over the slot that closes completely, so you can leave the card in all the time.

As for the connection, it's a simple mini USB plug, it's 1 1/2" from the corner, and 1 5/8" from the edge (due to the curve). Sorry for the non-metric measurements, but I only have have an imperial ruler handy.

I'd think that if you put in some sort of flap/door slider in that general area it'd work nicely. But having seen the high quality of your work on your website, I expect you'll want to wait until you can take your own measurements.

You're right about wanting to take the measurements myself. Been burned before. As for the fact that Canada's metric, most of my machinery comes from the States. It's easyer to buy an other tape measure than an other planer. I was born and measured in inches. :happy2: Speaking multiple languages has it's merits and charms, so is measuring.

Putting a tiny flap on the box is out of the question. You got to remember that working wood is a subtractive process compared to plastics or certain metals that use molding or additive processes. :knife: I lost two finger tips in 1980 and I want to keep the rest for pushing the charming little buttons of the PRS.

Also if the port is at the bottom of the device I might forgo the idea because this is where the lighting's batteries will go.

NatCh
10-16-2006, 01:23 PM
Yah, USB's on the bottom edge, yvanleterrible. I've been carrying mine around in a hollowed-out book (as camoflage against idle pilferage) and I don't miss access to the ports. :)

I don't really connect it to the PC that often, in the first place, so having to take it out of a box or cover wouldn't be any real burden to me, so long as it's not difficult to take it out.

You can see the ports in the pix I attached to my review (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7713) -- no good for measurements, of course, but you can get an idea of the placements from them. :beam:

That's a good point NatCh... I think of a different size case being a problem wrt the cradle because I'm thinking about the circular snap thing, which is not really something you want to remove everytime you dock. When you don't need to remove the cover, that snap thing is great.

But if there was a nice case didn't require that snap circle and was easy to remove, I'd definitely be open to that as an option. But it's hard to imagine one in a different form factor that's just as nice for actual reading. The Sony case is really comfortable and slim and easy to fold back.

Yeah, I really like the default Sony case. Most things like this you get a case for it is low budget and you want to replace it right away - I haven't felt that at all with the Sony case. It has a nice feel, seems sturdy, good weight to it and doesn't add a lot of thickness. Looks good too in my opinion.

According to a friend who is a fiber expert, the standard case is microfiber with leather (leatheret) trim. As for me, I'll stay with it for the near future.
