View Full Version : Official Meditation Thread (only for Sony Reader Enthusiasts)
diabloNL 09-21-2006, 02:22 PM So the release of the Sony Reader that will be in October... http://www.nsgn.net/forums/images/smiles/icon_pray.gif is getting us more and more nervous.
So here it is, our very own meditation thread. You feel you have a weak moment? Than this is the place to talk to your friends and let them help you to be strong again. Have faith in Sony....blah blah blah..
So I will start: "Hello my name is diabloNL and I'm nervous" :p
yvanleterrible 09-21-2006, 02:29 PM Hi! I'm yvanleterrible and my life sucks right now. When I get my Sony I shall be reborn... :tired:
NatCh 09-21-2006, 02:36 PM Yeesssssss! I feel a profound sense of peace descending upon me in zen-Like beauty!
Wait ... no ... not really.
This waiting is making me nuts. Okay, more nuts.
Thanks, DiabloNL.
diabloNL 09-21-2006, 02:49 PM Your welcome friend! :P
bingle 09-21-2006, 02:58 PM I don't know if anyone else has this problem.
I've got a whole ton of ebooks I've been saving up. Whenever I think about re-reading an old favorite, or something similar, I think "Well, it's so much trouble to check it out from the library when I've got the ebook, and it's such a pain to read on the screen... I'll just read it when I get my reader."
Of course, I started this whole thing about a year ago, when I was starting to get excited about the Hanlin offerings. So I've got quite a backlog now. In fact, I think my overall reading has gone *down* :-(
And then when I do read, I feel guilty. I saw "Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town" on the library shelf the other day, and I grabbed it and read it. Then I thought to myself, "Wait! This is a freely-available ebook! I should have read something I can't get in ebook format!"
... At least now I have a place to confess these things, and be at peace. Ommmmm. ;-)
diabloNL 09-21-2006, 03:01 PM Let it all out bingle! We understand.
yvanleterrible 09-21-2006, 03:11 PM I don't know if anyone else has this problem.

Worse than that! I PRINTED 6!
The D...D 6 buck books cost me 10 in ink!
Aooooooooooooooooooommmm!!!! :vulcan:
NatCh 09-21-2006, 03:23 PM Public service announcement: be sure to say it the right way round -- it's "om (http://thejourneyinward.net/music/om.wav)" -- you don't want to say it backwards (http://webspinners.futura.net/zumaltsp/wmadcow.wav).
That would be awfull! (but still stress relieving, somehow)
Alexander Turcic 09-21-2006, 07:28 PM *Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom *
Leanna99 09-21-2006, 08:01 PM Ok, so I finally decide on a device after A LOT of research, and I decide on the Sony. Then I get antsy about when it will be released. I keep getting excited about the dates they tell us, just to have them yank it away. I will not believe it until I get one in my hand, then I will rejoice.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!
yokos 09-22-2006, 04:56 AM [iLiad Enthusiast] :happy2:
Every new working e-reader, which is buyable for real (not just a prototype) is a good news. So I say: oooooohhhhhhmmm, too.
NatCh 09-22-2006, 09:35 AM [iLiad Enthusiast]Every new working e-reader, which is buyable for real (not just a prototype) is a good news.I could not agree more, yokos. Thanks for supporting us in our time of trial. :beam:
Frogsmasha 09-22-2006, 09:56 AM I bet this reader will be announced in October, and it'll be coming to stores in the middle of November. If we haven't heard about it now, than it's likely to be so.
This is what I think anyways.
NatCh 09-22-2006, 10:09 AM At this point, I think we'll just have to see what we see.
(but the wait is making me nuts)

What's with you? You just broke my mantra!
Sik him! :whip: :happy2:

Don't get me wrong, I want this reader just as bad as you guys do. Wouldn't they want to advertise this product around in magazines during September if they had a launch goal of October?
Just a thought
NatCh 09-22-2006, 10:57 AM ooooohhhhhmmmmmmmmmm
Wouldn't they want to advertise this product around in magazines during September if they had a launch goal of October?Ah, you've clearly never dealt with the Ancient and Arcane Mysteries of Marketing, grassho -- um, I mean, Frogsmasha.
<insert dramatic organ music> :laugh4:
ooooohhhhhmmmmmmmmmm
Those guys have their own way of thinking about things that is impenetrable to we mere mortals.
ooooohhhhhmmmmmmmmmm
Besides, we were talking in another thread about how difficult it is to get a lot of folks to grasp why an e-ink reader might be of interest to them without their actually seeing the display, 'cause it's so hard to capture. That may be part of it.
ooooohhhhhmmmmmmmmmm
Frogsmasha 09-22-2006, 01:38 PM ooooommm
diabloNL 09-22-2006, 01:38 PM ooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmm ooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmm
"it will be launched in october"
"it will be launched in october"
*sends energy to the Sony marketing team*
ooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmm
Leanna99 09-22-2006, 09:49 PM They don't need to advertise anywhere. Anyone who wants one of them, has heard about them, and has been waiting (very patiently *sigh*) for it. All they have to do is release it, and we will come running. I'm getting my shoes ready!

carolirvin 09-23-2006, 08:22 AM I think that the Sony Reader has such pent up demand that it may sell out very quickly upon its initial release. It has been a very clever marketing ploy to keep us dangling month after month to position us right before the holidays. The only thing that seems certain to me is that it will be sold just in time to make the holiday rush. Thus, it should appear no later than the day after Thanksgiving. How much earlier than that it might appear is anyone's guess. I think this has been deliberate though as opposed to sony's being forced to continually push back its release date. As an aside, I've been reading about all the ebook devices on here and one thing that pushes the sony reader a bit further ahead for me is that I really would rather avoid shipping this back and forth internationally. It seems to me that an awful lot of people with the irex, the V8 and the V2 are spending a ton of money in international shipping costs. They also seem to have to phone internationally in some cases. Only the sony reader will be capable of domestic (usa) returns and toll free domestic phone numbers. carol
diabloNL 09-23-2006, 08:41 AM I think that the Sony Reader has such pent up demand that it may sell out very quickly upon its initial release.
I really don't think so. Sure, here on mobileread it's well anticipated but out in the real world?
Welcome on this forum BTW!
Anyway, to get back to business....Ooooooooooooommmmmmmmmm
yvanleterrible 09-23-2006, 10:34 AM For me the Sony is still in an other country! I won't be able to order it directly from sonystyle.com, they won't accept canadian postal codes...
diabloNL 09-23-2006, 10:35 AM There will be other shops where you can buy it international. Like Amazon for example.
yvanleterrible 09-23-2006, 10:42 AM Remember Amazon Kindle rimes with hurdle...???
NatCh 09-23-2006, 12:04 PM I think there'll be some way to arrange it. Somehow....
diabloNL 09-23-2006, 12:06 PM Remember Amazon Kindle rimes with hurdle...???
Sorry yvanterrible, but could you explain. I'm don't understand what you mean because I'm just a Dutchy. :p
NatCh 09-23-2006, 01:01 PM He meant "ryhmes," DiabloNL. :laugh4:
Oi, we're getting silly.
ooooohhhhhhmmmmm.
Ken Stuart 09-23-2006, 02:47 PM Sorry yvanterrible, but could you explain. I'm don't understand what you mean because I'm just a Dutchy. :p
Amazon has their own e-ink ebook reader called "Kindle", so they probably won't be selling the competing Sony product.
You won't be able to order it online from Borders - because they use Amazon as their online store. :)
Probably some smaller place like the one linked in Pre-Order thread will ship to Canada.
diabloNL 09-23-2006, 02:50 PM I'm sure there will be shop who will send it to Europe. And otherwise I have friends in the US who can buy it for me. :D
EDIT: Oooooooooooooooommmmmmmmm

No, it's not me!
NatCh 09-23-2006, 03:56 PM No, it's not me! :laugh:The model for your avatar, perhaps? :laugh4:
diabloNL 09-23-2006, 05:46 PM Could be! :grin3:
doctorow 09-25-2006, 02:30 PM I want one... because of its form-factor (smaller than the iLiad = more portable).
So OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM M.
Xtremegene 09-26-2006, 04:41 AM OOOOMMMM.
The Reader better not get delayed (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start?CategoryName=pa_portablereader&Dept=audio)again.
...!!!
Alexander Turcic 09-26-2006, 05:15 AM The Reader is out now, but I cannot order it because I live in the wrong country. OH much this hurts!!!!!!!!!!
ultim8fury 09-26-2006, 05:37 AM time to call in some favours with some american friends of mine
lordvetinari2 09-26-2006, 01:45 PM I have some clients in Boston, maybe they would not mind... No, they propably would. Oh well.
yvanleterrible 09-26-2006, 07:04 PM Hi guys!
I'll take a cooling period for the next month and a half. The reason is Sony USA's dicriminatory embargo they put on the rest of us. Before my anger dictates bad words, I'll just leave to think of something else for a while. It's a shame to leave the nice buddies I've made over here, but it's temporary. I'll come back to read your unwrapping of that beautiful baby.
Take care and do good!
Yvan Verenka
Bob Russell 09-26-2006, 07:17 PM That would such a shame if you had a sabbatical now... I hope you'll consider popping back in here every once in a while anyway, Yvan. It's not the same without you here even for a few days!

That's too sad. I hope for you that very soon other shops will pick up the Reader who allow non-US orders.
diabloNL 09-27-2006, 10:30 AM Oooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyy GOD! It's ordered. Quick call the papers I will be the first person in The Netherlands with a Sony Reader (if Laurens doesn't have one already that is).
I was planning to go to the gym after work but I'm too excited to pump iron. :juggle:

diabloNL 09-27-2006, 10:52 AM LOL ;) Will you take your Reader to the gym next time when you go on the bike?
I don't thinks so. Dripping sweat can't be good for my upcoming baby. :p
Alexander Turcic 09-27-2006, 10:54 AM I don't thinks so. Dripping sweat can't be good for my upcoming baby. :p
But it would be a nice addition in our gallery (http://gallery.mobileread.com/). Think team spirit! ;)

drbrain8 09-27-2006, 02:19 PM Just ordered mine:
Estimated Ship Date: 10/25/2006
Here's hoping that Sony delivers.. with as less DRM as promised (yikes!).
drbrain8
Bob Russell 09-27-2006, 03:17 PM Think, Ziploc Baggie! That's a great application for the reader.... to download workout charts with exercises and weights or durations. Just download the info, put it in a baggie and run to the gym!
BTW, I actually asked Sony about the bag thing... whether or not it would hurt the device. Originally I was thinking for use in the kitchen with recipes. They couldn't promise anything, of course, but their guess was that it should be okay on the basis that it doesn't put out much heat.
bingle 09-28-2006, 01:09 PM MMmmooooooooo.....
:-(
Mid-November... Bah.
Oooooommmmmm.....
Xtremegene 09-28-2006, 01:27 PM The Borders stores around here had better get the Reader in stock before it goes back on sale online...oooommm. :sleepy:

NatCh 09-30-2006, 09:38 AM Hey, I was going to suggest that ... oh well ;-)I'd repeat the old saw about great minds thinking alike, but I don't wan't to insult you, Slava. :grin2:
lordvetinari2 10-01-2006, 02:25 PM I just found that the Connect store are carrying the latest Pratchett's, cheaper than the harcover on Amazon UK.

Ommmmmm
tekchic 10-02-2006, 02:46 PM I've had Palm's and PocketPC's for about ten years now (got first Palm Pilot Personal in 1996, and my first PocketPC 4/19/2000 the day they were released).
I've discovered that the Ziploc bag is one of the best technological inventions :) I've used it to read ebooks on the beach -- no sand in my device! Works great in the jacuzzi too, heh heh. So I'm guessing gallon-sized Ziploc bag for the reader?
They actually make some pretty nifty "dry bags" for gadgets now, but I haven't purchased one yet.
NatCh 10-02-2006, 05:48 PM So I'm guessing gallon-sized Ziploc bag for the reader?Hmmm. I think quart sized might do it, certainly 1/2 gallon would.

NatCh 10-12-2006, 06:34 PM Well, I'm not talking about trying to keep my head dry!

Oooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmm
diabloNL 10-30-2006, 12:49 PM Joy! My friend is back in the US and received my Reader. He tested it and all is well. With good luck I will have my Reader within a week!!! :D

NormB 01-04-2007, 06:17 PM "Finally, the terminology surrounding the device itself is quite interesting and raises some very interesting questions. For example, if the Sony Reader is the “reader,” and the human reader is the “user,” there is a slippage here that occurs in meaning of the word “reader.” Typically—although obviously not exhaustively or exclusively—defined as a human activity performed with an object (a book, for example), “reading” here is something done by the hardware which displays digital texts. While this is, in part, a tongue-and-cheek use of the term that most likely has its genesis in marketing strategy, it nevertheless introduces an important philosophical question for us to consider: is reading an online or digital work an exclusively human activity? Or must reading now be understood as a system of interaction between a variety of human and non-human agents?"
This person(professional student?) should go get a real job!
yvanleterrible 01-05-2007, 08:48 AM Good bit of philosophy NormB!
We've all bumped our heads on that one while writing posts. Surprisingly not too many clashes of meaning have surfaced. Apparently the adaptability(humanity's greatest quality) of most has leveled the communication hurdle. And if you add the fact that half of us speak a different language...we're getting along nicely!
In this definition may I add "the decryption of manufactured symbols to communicate ideas". That takes care of all media.
What if we wrote on buildings instead of paper or computers? Would the Library become a reader? A book collector's domain would be an awsome sight!:happy2:
Reading is not the private domain of man. There are AIs that read, do they understand? That is something else.
PS. I'd love to go back to studies!
NormB 01-05-2007, 10:07 AM Sorry, I did not clarifiy the source of my quote. Here is the source:
http://transliteracies.english.ucsb.edu/post/research-project/research-clearinghouse-individual/research-reports/sony-reader
Being an Engineer I could not get that far into transliteracies myself.
I was just poking some fun at where some of the multibillion dollar California election initiatiives funds for education are being spent.
______________
Love this site tho for its balance of technical and transliteracies!
