View Full Version : Supported memory cards
antonio_uk 07-25-2006, 04:52 AM Can people please post here the manufacturer/model/size/type (compact flash or sd) of the memory cards they have tried to use with their iLiads and if they worked or not?
I guess this would be useful for people interested in buying memory cards. I would set up a Wiki table for this, but I have no idea of how to do it :)
stinky ox 07-25-2006, 04:56 AM I started using a Nytech 256M card but found that to be only intermittantly recognised. Then I switched to a PNY 512M card and that's fine (modulo having to reinsert it after bootup to get it recognised, normal v2.4 behaviour). Once recognised it stays recognised, unlike the other.
Both SD, BTW.
Riocaz 07-25-2006, 06:15 AM Viking International 1gb CF cards. Both work, and have no problems being recognised.
Anyone tried the really big cards yet?
yokos 07-25-2006, 09:19 AM My Sandisk CF Extreme III 2.0 GB [I bought it for my digicam a while ago] works nicely.
Are there any other SD cards that are known to work...?
VillageReader 07-31-2006, 04:33 AM I'm using a Sandisk 1G. No other description on the card, but it seems to be working fine.

Has anyone tried 2gb...? Or is 1Gb as good as it gets...? And has anyone tried using a SD Card & CF Card at the same time...? At the moment I've got 2Gb USB stick that works fine (as long you stick it in on boot up)
Btw, I've added a page to the wiki : http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Iliad_Memorycards_list
tribble 07-31-2006, 05:09 AM my transcend 2gb 150x sd does not work
Sischa 07-31-2006, 06:20 AM I had a SanDisk 512MB CF card + a 256MB USB Stick + a 1GB Transcend SD card inside at the same time and no problems. Sometimes i have to reinsert a card or "re plugin" the USB stick until the iLead recognizes my memory cards/sticks ... thats all ...

When I saw people had success w/the 1G and problems w/2G I decided on 1G. That will hold more than enough books until I can reload. Also, the 1G Sandisk had a rebate so I got it for $25 USD. The bigger cards are still pretty expensive.
Sischa 07-31-2006, 08:55 AM hehe Ghz ? :D
NatCh 07-31-2006, 09:56 AM hehe Ghz ? :D
booo, hisss. :happy2:
firekat 07-31-2006, 10:36 AM 1 gig generic Sandisk SD. Seems to work fine. Sandisk 128 mb Cruzer Mini USB works as well
VillageReader 07-31-2006, 10:36 AM booo, hisss. :happy2:
No, I did err, then corrected it. I work at a company that makes RF cal equipment - GHz comes more naturally than Gb when I type.

Oh, I thought you were making a pun -- "the cost of the bigger memory cards giga-hurts (gHz)"
Now I'm disappointed. :rolleyes5

I'm not that witty early in the morning.
Doesn't get much better during the day either. :rolleyes5
bgreat 07-31-2006, 07:41 PM 2GB Toshiba SD -- does not work.
antonio_uk 08-01-2006, 10:30 AM Has iRex specified a maximum supported size for SD cards?
I just saw a 4GB SD card on Ebay and I am tempted to buy one.
Stuart Young 08-01-2006, 10:34 AM 2GB Sandisk Compact Flash Card works fine (Standard version, not ultra fast)

Well... Based on this survey I wouldn't bother with anything > 1 Gb for SD. Not sure for CF, though
tribble 08-01-2006, 11:55 AM Has iRex specified a maximum supported size for SD cards?
I just saw a 4GB SD card on Ebay and I am tempted to buy one.
Wanted to buy a 4gig aswell.
iRex said, they tested for 2gb nothing greater tested.
so i played it safe and got a 2gb sd card (didnt want to risk anything higher, because my camera supports only 2gb)
sofar my 2gb didnt work in the iliad. and i havent heard of a working 2gb card or bigger yet.
Sischa 08-01-2006, 12:33 PM Nothing to wonder as far as i know 1+ GB SD cards use an other technic then smaller SD cards (at least i think i read somewhere)
Based on this I've ordered a 1Gb SD card from SanDisk... Hopefuly that'll work as my 2Gb SanDisk SD card (which works on my Treo) doesn't...
antonio_uk 08-03-2006, 10:39 AM Looks like SD cards are NOT SUPPORTED, although some will work if they are compatible with MMC (however, its maximum size would be 1 Gig)
From iRex FAQ ( http://forum.irexnet.com/viewtopic.php?t=4 ) :
07. Hardware - IO Devices
Which IO Devices are supported?
The iLiad supports most CF, UBS and MMC-cards, however SD cards are not supported. In many cases SD cards can be used since they are compatible with MMC, however the maximum size of an MMC is 1GB. SD cards can be bigger but these can not be used in the iLiad since the addressing method is different than MMC in that case, the maximum size of compatible SB cards therefore is limited to 1GB.
08. Hardware - Internal Memory
Can the 128 MB internal memory be upgraded ?
This is not foreseen. We suggest to use MMC (up to 1GB) or CF (up to 4GB).
Hmm... See : http://forum.irexnet.com/viewtopic.php?t=6 Time to change my order...!
Paethon 08-09-2006, 02:22 AM You can always use an SD->CF-Adaptor for about 20€
Drops 08-17-2006, 03:27 AM The following SD cards are working (software rev. 2.6.)
- Kingston 512 MB
- Sandisk 512 MB Ultra II
- Sandisk 1 GB Extreme III (fast, very nice)
Just bought a Kingston 1GB MMC (+PLUS), but it doesn't work, iLiad could not recognize it. Also found a strange problem. If I boot up iLiad with this card inserted, the battery and keyboard indicator could not activate as usual. It keeps going until a reset without this card in.
seaview 09-26-2006, 11:04 PM Transcend CF 4G (x120) is working fine with iLiad 2.6.1. When I inserted it, it wasn't recognized. it looked frozen.
After reading that Transcend fat32 isn't working from wiki.mobileread, I formatted CF to fat32 and it's working great now. Thanks.
scotty1024 10-21-2006, 03:45 PM I just tried a Sandisk Ultra II with snap in half USB feature and it doesn't just not work, it messes up operation of the iLiad itself (pen wouldn't work, battery gauge never works...)
This is on 2.7.
Lexar SD 128MB works
Sandisk Ultra 2 SD/USB 512MB does not work, sometimes is recognized partly and then vanishes.
scotty1024 11-06-2006, 05:01 PM SanDisk Compact Flash Extreme III 4GB - works.
But benchmarking shows the iLiad is only achieving 20% of the rated performance of this awesome card (20MB per second). So it's a bit of an over kill for the iLiad.
But when you pull it out and plug it into your host computer via a suitably fast card reader... Oh yeah baby!
JacquesL 11-10-2006, 05:21 AM Hi,
Last tests :
Working :
CF : Kingston elite pro 4GB 45X
USB : Dane-Elec 512 MB zMate Pen SILVER
Not Working :
USB : Corsair flash voyager 1 GO
USB : Ipod Nano
SanDisk Extreme IV 4.0 GB CompactFlash works :-)
Is there a practical difference between SD/MMS Cards and CF cards in terms of battery life or other issues ?
nekokami 04-12-2007, 05:36 PM CF cards can be bigger. SD cards don't exist above 1Gb, I believe.
yvanleterrible 04-13-2007, 08:03 AM CF cards can be bigger. SD cards don't exist above 1Gb, I believe.
Actually 8Gb. I have a 2Gb one. You can now buy them for 1/8th the price I paid for it.
I bought it for the flash video, Sanyo Xacti camera I use. It stores full video and pictures directly to an SD. 1Gb stores just about one hour of video so higher capacities are a must. And if you consider that most digital photo cameras can now do more than 5 megapixel pictures, high capacity SDs become necessary.
They now want to change the format. I fear that the newer higher yields will not permit compatibility with older devices. What's new!
tirsales 11-09-2007, 07:46 AM Has anybody tested if "unrecognizable" CF cards get recognized when partitioned?
Quite a number of embedded devices can use a "small" partition on a big card, even if not able to use the complete card. (I assume that only the first partition would be useable without changing the mount-scripts, but I don't know for sure).
This could also be true for SD/MMC-Cards, but I have absolutely no idea wether they can be partitioned as well. I think I remember that no, but it's been quite a while.
A-Data CompactFlash Speedy 32 GB works fine in the iLiad.
:2thumbsup

godidog 03-19-2008, 05:00 AM Kingston 4GB 133X Elite Pro CF, factory formatted, works fine. Also works for re-flashing.
Kingston 03-20-2008, 04:50 PM I'm using this 1Gb card with no problems. Price is good:

GavinK151 05-01-2008, 11:36 AM I just got a Veho 16GB SD card (yeah I know...who?) and while the irex lets me access it (the CF "button" is selectable) nothing shows up on the card.
Now we are on FW 2.12 what is the biggest SD card that works?
Oh and also, I assume trying different cards should not cause any permenant damage right?
EDIT: doh ok just read that you need special drivers/readers to access these sorts of cards - think they are SDHC and I assume the iliad cannot read these. Therefore it would see that 4GB is the largest you can use?
Adam B. 05-01-2008, 02:15 PM The iLiad only supports CompactFlash and MMC cards (and SD cards that comply to the MMC < 1GB spec). A 16GB CF card should work in theory. I think others have tired it.
JSWolf 05-01-2008, 02:16 PM How do you tired a CF memory card? Do you use it so much that it just gets tired?

yeah I see someone posted in the thread about a 32gb CF working! I might give that a try - I saw the same make as was mentioned on ebay for around £70 which is great.
I am quite sure I dont have 32gb of books of course but still - would be nice to have :-)

Heading off-topic ... I started thinking that if I had 32Gb of books I'd probably not have enough years left to actually read it all. And then I started thinking about how collections of e-books might get passed on down the generations. OK, technology will change, but it is now going to be so easy for ordinary people to leave an entire collection of books to their kids or grandchildren and have the collection grow. I must be getting old if I'm thinking in this way :(
GavinK151 05-13-2008, 10:28 AM I assume having both a CF card and a CD card in at teh same time should work fine? Not tried yet...
HarryT 05-13-2008, 10:39 AM Yes; they're seen as separate storage devices.
Note that you need an MMC card rather than an SD. SD cards up to 1GB will probably work, though. Sticking with CF cards is safer.

yep working well. I got a 32gb Adata CF card that is working great. I put loads of PDFs onto it as well as comics... and I managed to fill about 6% of it :-)
What are people's experiences with 8Gb, 16Gb, etc... Are they all universally supported, or is there a specific brand which works best...?
HarryT 05-25-2008, 03:41 AM Unlike "SD" cards, where you have physically different hardware with MMC, SD, SDHC, etc, CF is a common standard at any size - any device should support any size card.
nuitcalin 06-10-2008, 06:03 AM Hello eberybody, i just bought a MMCtm plus 1GB and it isn^t recognized ?!!!!!!
DigiDirk 06-10-2008, 10:04 AM Perhaps because it is a MMC plus card and not a MMC card...
Try formatting to FAT32 with a card reader, though... might work then.
Dirk

I just bought an AData 32GB Speedy CF card. But my iLiad says there is only 2898MB free space before I put anything in the card. The card is FAT32 format. iLiad software version: 2.12. Kernel version: 2.4.19-rmk7-pxa2-irexl#21100.
Any idea about this?
By the way, I am totally new to this forum. This is my first post here.

it's a 'feature' of the iLiad. It won't report the actual free space of cards over 4Gb, but you can still use the card If you want to be sure it works put more files on the card than the reported free space and check that you can access everything.
nekokami 06-26-2008, 06:29 PM Hm. I wonder if that was why my 4Gb CF card got corrupted when I tried to access it through the iLiad export, rather than in a card reader? It happened twice. I use a separate card reader now, and have had no problems since.
atesta 06-26-2008, 11:52 PM Hey my CF card is not being recognised in the CF section of Device manager. Makes no sense :(

details of card (brand, model, size, partition type) and iLiad firmware version would be handy.
Make sure you read all the notes here (http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Iliad_Memorycards_list) and meet the requirements.
