? thought the V8 wasn't for the european/US english speaking market?
This price is in dollars, is that american dollars?
Since the FAQ says that the V8 supports english could I buy one as that's all I need?

OMG decisions, decisions... what are the advantages of a V2 over a V8??
Should I wait??? If so how long would the wait be? Should I just buy both as an when they are released as theoretically the price of the 2 is still less than the price of an Iliad?

I have to admit, its tempting... I havent heard anything back from irex regarding an invite enen though I applied for one :(
I guess its because im in Australia...

But then, if I got a v8 I'd always be wondering wether I should have just waited for the v2... Decisions decisions... How far away IS the v2 anyway?

How far away IS the v2 anyway?

That's the big question :-( Jinke said that they would be seling "samples" in May (and that was pushed back to June, I believe). But the samples seem only to be for prospective distribution partners - not even for reviewers. So you or I actually getting a V2 seems to depend on the partners agreeing to distribute the product, then buying them from Jinke, then selling them to us. That could take any amount of time (or never happen).

See, now I'm really torn.

Pros: ability to use a wide variety of formats (too bad it doesn't read unconverted LITs), reasonable price, small size, integrated screen cover, doesn't require the use of crappy Sony software.

Cons: funky software, designed for Chinese instead of English-speaking user base, cheap, shiny plastic, unknown future.

The Sony Reader looks like a great device, but I'm willing to bet they'll hamstring it by requiring users to use the Sony Connect software (which will also leave out OSX users). The fact that it uses SD cards is a huge plus, and I'm amazed that Sony would support anything other than MemorySticks.

*sigh*

If the iLiad was a little smaller and a little more polished (and about half the price) then I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I might have to wait until the second generation units come out.

The perfect situation would be if I could get a V8 (or V2) with a finished, native-English UI.

LVD is selling localized V8 - with russian and english UI. Like I have now.
Chineses have no rights for this localized software, as I know...

You can probably order the V8 directly from Jinke, but the interface will be in chinese, which may be a problem if you don't read the language. :rolleyes5

You might try contacting user LVD (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/member.php?userid=5537), if memory serves, he's working on selling an english version of the V8. I'd suggest you look at his posts (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/search.php?searchid=39007) to get an idea what he's said about it in the past.

You'll may have to PM him to make contact. :happy2:

Hope that helps.

And how do you find it? Have you owned any other eBook readers and is it significantly better?

I own an eBookwise 1150 which I think is great and want to know if the eInk readers are worth the substantial extra cash...

sjaaks,

If you're not reading ebooks produced by the Wolf software, how are you getting books onto the device? Does it show up as a USB device when you plug it into your computer? Are you copying files to an SD card and then putting the SD card into the V8?

What format are the files you're reading? TXT?

Thanks,
-Brian

Without conversing to Wolf I can read a English text on the device. Or I select and copy paste to notepad and bring it to the SD card, or I save page as... directly to the SD card. Than the SD card in the book. I am reading HTML and TXT and Wolf.

I borrowed a Hanlin V8 from a friend of mine a few days ago. The device is too buggy and it crashes a lot. I was quite disappointed. The PDF reader that Hanlin claims is bogus. It is basically a picture file on the device, not a real PDF reader!!!

PDF files I don't know about.
The payment in advance to their Chinese bank. 299 USD + parcel costs EMS 76 USD. Go to the Jinke site and start a conversation with May.

Update. Concerning the Netherlands. My V8 has arrived august 3 and now august 24 did I get an additional VAT (BTW) bill of 68,88 euro.
Total costs till now, 299 USD + 76 USD + transfer 7,50 euro + BTW 68,88 euro.

Total 308,29 euro + 68,88 euro = a lot of money. Wait till it is in the shop. It will be cheaper and better.

So, I can see in attachment #1422 that it has problems with quotes; two Cyrillic characteres before the quotes -and the closing quote appears as an opening one.

TaKir,

Thank you for that information.

You're wellcome :)
As I can see at your photos, there are minor problems with some lines - they are a bit to the right from left edge...
You can try using msword to format your books.
Make all paragraphs first lines=0.6mm, no linebreaks, justified, save as txt - it should be ok.

Important!!!
Do not use names for your books, with first common part
Author_book1.txt
Author_book2.txt
Author_book(n).txt

Use inique first part of a name for books in one folder. (Book_author, or Book in folder "Author") or 01_book.txt, 02_book.txt, etc.

Otherwise you can see all books called "Author_book1.txt" with the same text.

Is it possible to write macros in Open Office org. writer?
Then you can do so:
- Start new macros
- Select all (Ctrl+A) ???
- Edit - Paragraph - alignement justified, first line - ident 0,6mm -- ok.
- Stop your macros.

Save as txt.
Now you can use this macros to prepare your books from doc, rtf, html, txt, etc.
Just open file, choose execute your macros, save.

Also you can use Bookdesigner (http://www.the-ebook.org/e107/download.php?view.8)+ update (http://www.the-ebook.org/e107/download.php?view.9) for it. It is free and has english manual.
first install BD, then unpack update in it's catalog.

TaKir,

Till now I was not successful in bringing the nicer font to my V8 device. So I made a picture of the zoomed screen with printed text on paper on the side. The grey screen looks in reality more bright. The quality of the letter on the paper is what I wish. In the future Jinke software will make it easy with one push on the button. I hope.

You have chinese firmware from Jinke, I guess. That is why text formatting is not so good, as we have using last russian firmware.

In coming soon russian update we will have:
- new additional fonts+ easy switch to desired font and font size
- more font sizes
- good working html reader

Jinke has no rights for russian software and it's updates.
They can do some software changes, but not so good and not so soon.

After a weekend struggling ;) with Paint to get 2 pictures in one, this is the result. The upper half is the normal letter size and the Russian below is zoomed. From Charlie and the chocolate factory.

Update 1: I have taken a picture under better lighting conditions. So it won't scare you of. Trouble is indeed without good light the screen is to dark to read. It concerns me a lot.

Update 2: Pictures in different light placed together.edit.

A double picture of the first page from Robinson Crusoe. On the right side you see the default Font which comes with the Hanlin V8. On the left I have taken The Arial Font to the reader.

edit. Added second picture. On the left Georgia Font (18 pt. on notepad) and default Font Hanlin V8 on the right. Note that the screen of the Hanlin is 9 cm wide.

edit. Added third picture. On the left Arial Narrow (36 pt. on notepad) and default Font V8 on the right. It can even bigger as shown. Excerpt from Edgar Allan Poe.

edit. Added fourth picture with Chinese characters between Arial narrow 20pt. on notepad. From Wikipedia.

edit. Added fifth picture with even bigger Font. Georgia 48 pt. in Wordpad this time. (Edgar Allan Poe)

Indeed The Hanlin virtual Printer does the job. In Notepad there are lots of Fonts to choose from. But when the text is on the V8 it does not zoom. So take care to start before printing with one of the adjustible points. Its very easy after all the trouble I had. The Arial Font had 16 points on Notepad.
