View Full Version : iRex iLiad invites for every MobileReader from the US
CommanderROR 07-04-2006, 08:20 AM Hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6927) that iRex has started to give out invites to our European readers, we're happy to inform you that now they've also agreed to hand out invites to our fellow readers from the US. The procedure is the same:
In this thread, you simply state that you acknowledge the fact that the development of the iRex iLiad isn't finished yet, and that you know that its software is still being developed before it can be considered as fully functional as advertised. Please don't forget this step!
You then send me your email address and a short note that you're a US citizen via private message (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&userid=5024).
I'll compile a list and send it to iRex. Your invites should arrive soon after.
Again, I'm not working for iRex nor do I get paid; I'm doing this in my own free time. Let's try to keep this thread uncluttered.

CommanderROR 07-04-2006, 12:57 PM I just sent the first batch of email adresses to iRex.
Unfortunately not all those who sent a PM also acknowledged the terms here (some did it by PM which is OK, but I prefer to have it all here...).
I sent out all email adresses up to raevyn1 today, despite the fact that some acknowledgments are still missing...I hope they'll be added soon...
The next batch will follow sometime tomorrow.
Please follow the procedure.
Thanks.

Dear Commander ROR,
Please forgive my neophyte confusion - I've just joined the list and was unsure how to reply to a thread so mistakenly sent you an ICQ message.
I live in the UK and should like to receive an invitation to purchase an Iliad Reader. I appreciate that the model just released does not have the functionality of the consumer model, due to be released later this year.
Thank you for your initiative in discovering the availiability and your willingness to act as a "conduit" for interested members. I've been keen on ebooks since owning the Rocket Ebook, and now am a very satisfied owner of a cybook. However, I've also been eagerly awaiting a European e-ink device since learning of the Sony Librie.
Many thanks.
Regards,
Angus McPherson

Snappy! 07-04-2006, 08:51 PM How about just doing a "I acknowledge the terms on the first post" ;) ... :p
(Sorry, it just felt so marxist / droning ... seeing everyone typing in the same thing ... not that shortening it would change that, but ... )

CommanderROR 07-05-2006, 02:51 AM Thanks for following the rules...I know what it has to feel like having to write the same little sentence (or rather copy and paste it...^^) everybody else wrote...but imagine what it feels like to read it all...^^
I just got news from iRex, saying that the US invites won't be going out immediately because there is some small problem with USD payment, so don't get worried if you don't recieve your invites right away.

rkfoster 07-05-2006, 03:58 PM Okay, newbie here. I've been hanging around MobileRead for a month or so but this post got me to join. :) One question though, does this commit one to actually purchasing the Iliad and, if so, what is the projected cost? Or is this just beta testing the device?
CommanderROR 07-05-2006, 04:24 PM the cost is 650€ plus shipping...so not cheap...
rkfoster 07-05-2006, 04:31 PM So, at current exchange rates, that's US$827? Probably a little steep for the US. :(
CommanderROR 07-05-2006, 04:34 PM btw.:
some 2 people forgot to mention their email addresses...I sent a PM.
All requests up to this point have been forwarded.

CommanderROR 07-06-2006, 03:50 AM I just did a quick count...so far 69 members from Mobileread and Teleread have been added the the invite list through this project...^^
Pretty impressive eh? The europeans should all have their invites by now, the US members will follow on Monday if iRex doesn't change plans *again*....
pitcher23 07-06-2006, 05:25 AM the US members will follow on Monday if iRex doesn't change plans *again*....
For the record, I got an invite in my email today, though I am unsure if it was from when I entered my email on their site months ago or if they are starting early with the U.S. invites.
Edit: I was able to process my U.S. order. The total came to $739 Pricey but not as bad as I thought it would be.
CommanderROR 07-06-2006, 05:44 AM Maybe I accidentally added you under the Europe list...not sure anymore...or maybe iRex mixed it up accidentally. Entering credit card information is done after you have finished your order.
The price seems to be wrong though...or very unfair...:-)
No I just checked...you were in the US list...well...maybe they did start early...
Just got mine today:
"Dear Sir, Dear Madam,
Thank you for your ongoing interest in our iLiad E-reader.
Some time ago you have sent us an email / showed interest in obtaining an iLiad sample. We are happy to inform you that, for European Business to Business customers, the iRexShop is open. We have started selling evaluation products per June 12, 2006.
You are invited to login to:
www.irexshop.com/login.php?user=new
Access to this shop is limited to known e-mail addresses, so please use the same e-mail address to register your information and order your iLiad.
E-mail address for your entry is:"
BTW, wondering whether anybody get the same: We are happy to inform you that, for European Business to Business customers, the iRexShop is open. We have started selling evaluation products per June 12, 2006.
Is it for US readers? Can US residents order now?
pitcher23 07-06-2006, 05:49 AM Yeah, I just checked and the card was approved and the order is being processed. The only stumbling block I ran into was that there was no option for me to enter the state I live in. Perhaps the zip code is enough for them. Nevertheless I sent them an email with my full address and my order number.
DuaneAA 07-06-2006, 06:04 AM I am in the U.S. and also received my invite e-mail about four hours ago (2:12 AM central time).
Having waited this long, I think I am going to wait until some people start receiving theirs and report on functionality before ordering mine, even if it adds another couple of weeks to the process.

I assume that it is. I got my invite this morning and placed my order. It took it without error and I got my conformation that they accepted my order.

RibRdb2 07-07-2006, 10:12 PM Have all the US invites been sent? I still haven't gotten one.
CommanderROR 07-08-2006, 12:56 AM I've sent all those that came before melchemet. Maybe you had a typo in there or you were one of those who had forgotten to add their address...^^
Just send it again and i'll add it int he next batch.
pgood4 07-08-2006, 09:50 AM I haven't gotten an invite either. I'll send another PM with the address.
bryanzs 07-08-2006, 10:04 AM I, too, haven't received an invite yet, but I just assumed that now that they've started shipping - in theory - they're a bit too busy to send out the most recent batch CommanderROR forwarded on to them. And of course, now that it's the weekend, I don't imagine they're doing _anything_.
CommanderROR, any way you can verify this? If they can confirm this, perhaps you won't be inundated with repeated requests from all us impatient folks...
CommanderROR 07-08-2006, 10:21 AM @everybody who hasn't received an invite yet...
I posted every time I sent a list to iRex, so if you haven't received your invite although you can see my "list sent" post after your post in the thread, please just send your email address again.
I have had about 4-5 cases of forgotten email addresses so far and I think I sent a PM to every one ot these so that they can correct their error. It is possible however that I forgot one or two.
I'm pretty sure that I sent every address I received on to iRex. I did double and triple checking every time.
I guess the error is either forgotten email address, typo somewhere (trembling hands...^^) or that iRex simply lost the addresses when adding them to their invite list.
So I'd thank you very much for simply waiting until Monday afternoon and then sending your email addresses again. I'll forward them again and we'll see what happens.
Thanks.
CommanderROR 07-09-2006, 11:37 AM Next list sent. Everybody who posted so far is now included.
VillageReader 07-09-2006, 12:01 PM I, too, haven't received an invite yet, but I just assumed that now that they've started shipping - in theory - they're a bit too busy to send out the most recent batch CommanderROR forwarded on to them. Man, if the same people doing shipping are taking orders this really IS a small company
CCDMan 07-09-2006, 05:59 PM I acknowledge the fact that the Iliad is still to expensive and has too little publisher support. <g> I am gonna wait for Sony.

jdeisenberg 07-10-2006, 07:39 PM 1) Does the invitation mean I am required to purchase?
2) Will the software upgrade be possible without buying a new iLiad?
If the answer to question 1 is "no" and the answer to question 2 is "yes," then:
I acknowledge the fact that the development of the iRex iLiad isn't finished yet, and I know that its software is still being developed before it can be considered as fully functional as advertised.
CCDMan 07-10-2006, 09:19 PM Let's see if you can hold out when we start bragging about our new toys...^^
Perhaps you are right. But then I am in the middle of a home remodel so probably won't have time to read anything for a few months anyway!.....

The answer to 1 is no. As for number 2, the software/firmware will be updated through the iRex IDS Service site. You connect your iLiad to the iRex site and they then push the latest firmware/software to the device.
