View Full Version : Sony lent me a Daily Edition
Nate the great 01-10-2010, 08:41 PM I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I got the PRS-900 at a private dinner with Sony Thursday night. They gave them out as party favors.
I've been using it and I think I've already formed an opinion. I think I'm going to let the review wait for a while so I can reevaluate.
As it stands, I don't like the Daily Edition.
daffy4u 01-10-2010, 08:44 PM Uh-oh. Did they "lend" it to you or "give" it to you?

Love it or not, you have to admit, it was a great party favor. Much better than a balloon and a horn.:snicker:
pholy 01-10-2010, 08:47 PM They gave them out as party favors.
Since when do people lend party favors? ..... Some party!

I have to return it. But you have to admit, that was a good line. :p

A most excellent line! :) Can you return it in.... oh say... a year? (so that we all get to play with it... shhhh)

I sure wish I'd been at that dinner party!! I'd slip my 8-gig card in it real fast.
I'm sure I'd rather crash that dinner party than the one at the White House.

ziegl027 01-11-2010, 07:17 PM Try to keep in mind as you re-evaluate that it's a large(r anyway) format device that allows annotations with handwriting, that is quite a bit cheaper than the Que is or the Skiff is likely to be. My Mazda 5 has been a great car for me, but I probably wouldn't think much of it if I had been given it to review after getting to test drive something a lot "sexier" (and more expensive).

So can you expand on your dislike for the Daily Edition? Has your view changed at all?

He may be traveling home today (hope he doesn't get stuck in some snow place). Maybe we'll get his report later today or tomorrow.

I am going to expand on my opinion. After all, I was given the Daily Edition so I could write a review. I just want to wait until I have more energy. I'm still recovering from CES.
BTW, I just noticed that you can tell how worn out I am by plotting the length of the news stories I've written in the last few days. The length decreases with my energy level.

OT but we love our Mazda 5. Its a fantastic little car. I drive the much sexier RX-8 most of the time and still enjoy our 5:)

Now when you say "given" are we talking loan-given or given-given? Im still a little unclear on the term "Party Favor":)

Post #5 says he has to return it.
fugazied 01-12-2010, 03:41 PM I would have told the forum it was a freebie, would have been funny to see the forum users heads blow up in fits of jealousy (maybe the troll in me!).
The updates have been great Nate, much appreciated! I have heard from lots of people that CES is definitely tiring!
jbloudg20 01-12-2010, 04:05 PM <sarcasm>Nice to see Sony has ones to give away, but none to ship to paying customers! </sarcasm> :D
Love to hear what you think about it. I can't wait to get mine.
antistar 01-13-2010, 01:30 AM I wish I could buy those lent out machines as refurbished items...:p

When Nate sends his back they'll repackage it and ship it to you :D
catsittingstill 01-13-2010, 02:21 PM I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion on it.
yvanleterrible 01-13-2010, 02:22 PM Have some rest Nate. Looking forward to that review.
daffy4u 01-17-2010, 05:18 PM Still waiting.
Nate the great 01-18-2010, 09:23 AM It's done. I'm waiting to get some feedback before posting it.

Go ahead... post it.... we'll give you feedback :D
P.X. Fort 01-18-2010, 11:52 AM I thought it was posted because I read it about 2+ hours ago. I also noticed the title had Sony spelled wrong. It was sany or something. I just went to read it again but it's gone.
For what its worth, I thought it was a very fair and honest review.

I posted it and then soft deleted it. Several of the people who I asked for feedback pointed out that I missed a number of topics I should have covered.
yvanleterrible 01-18-2010, 01:53 PM Kudos to thoroughness...
Not_A_Crook 01-18-2010, 02:17 PM Too bad about the DE, it sounds cool...
Nate the great 01-18-2010, 04:51 PM The current version is visible, but I have not posted it yet. I locked the thread intentionally. I don't want the editorial comments to show up there. But I do desire feedback.
basschick 01-19-2010, 01:25 AM how was it for graphic novels and comics? i've always disliked them on a smaller screen - they're the only reason i might consider a larger ebook reader.
Sweetpea 01-19-2010, 01:28 AM Usability
My minimum requirement for ergonomics is a one handed operation. It's possible to use the Daily Edition with one hand, but I'm not comfortable with it. I don't feel like I have a good grip on the unit, and I'm afraid I might drop it. It does look nice, though.
Can you explain why you don't feel like you have a good grip on the unit? Is it lack of "holding" space, or the fact that's a longer, 7" screen? The material used?
Ben Thornton 01-19-2010, 03:30 AM hello
I've read your review which was useful - thanks
feedback:
you might consider editing your conclusion bullets into a separate pro and con list
would it be useful to compare against obvious alternatives such as the Sony 600 and Kindle 2?
I also have a question on the bugs: is the firmware upgradeable and do Sony have a history of doing this?
Thanks
Ben Thornton 01-19-2010, 03:34 AM re the question on comics, this review (http://www.the-ebook-reader.com/sony-prs-900.html) covers them, including a video
