Yes, but everyone just wants to try his device once before writing reports. Unfortunately, "trying" means "read a book". I heard rumors that CommanderROR's test book is War and Peace.

Thanks, I needed a laugh. :)
(my cube neighbors are wondering about me right now)

CommanderROR
07-13-2006, 11:13 AM
hehe...it's not War and Peace...that's waht I read on the forums...

i've still not managed to make my Riverworld into a suitable PDF...It's all A4...but I got the right program now...so maybe i'll be able to actually READ something soon.

I've had lots of little things to do today that kept me away from the Iliad.

I also have some news...
I had some trouble with the notes ability (I told you about it) adn wrote to iRex. They sent me the files after a short time and I could use the function (until I ran out of time).
I also had a problem with IDS. Email support told me to call the german support office (they actually have one now it seems).
The bad nes is, that the lady there doesn't speak german. The good new is, she's nice, she took me through all the steps, and as it still didn't work then (because I did everything correctly before..hehe...) she gave me a support ticket for further contact with the actual Software guys.
So the support is actually quite good now as far as I can tell. The real problem (something the lady could not know) was a setting in my router software that didnt allow any more IP's to be supplied by the DHCP...stupid mistake a setting I made ages ago and forgot about...^^
Now the error is resolved, but I get another one...don't know what that is, but at least I get past the first barrier. i'll do more testing later.

got my iliad too and made some photos of the unpacking which i hope to upload this afternoon. display looks great although i haven't been able to read anything as my pdf ebooks are all in a somewhat bigger size which isn't really readable (although the resolution of the would allow this using a magnifying glass). I had severe Problems to use the on-screen keyboard, several numbers and chars simply wouldn't work. A normal wacom digitizer stylus "works" too, as far as this can be considered working in my case. I have to try this again without loading tha batteries simultaneously, hope it's a software bug.
Unfortunately i'll not be home for the next few days so this will have to wait :-(

It shouldn't be.

They have the address, and if you are a larger company one would presume you have a reception desk.

They go to reception, and ask for "Name" and reception looks you up.

CommanderROR, Sischa: does your Iliad have something loose inside that makes a noise when you shake the device, too? Mine does and it sounds like something broke inside :-(
I get the slight feeling that my usual luck is beginning to set in now... That will be an interesting inner fight - should I send it back to have this corrected/replaced or should I keep it because it is still better than nothing?

Very strange they have wear. You could ask iRex what's going on or open it yourself if you are technical.

I should know...

A few years ago I wrote a FAQ called
"How to treat the Dutch and how to avoid becoming one" (http://www.xs4all.nl/~pdegroot/holland/index.html)
a FAQ on life in the Netherlands.

It is still -sort of- alive and as long as you are waiting for that UPS guy to arrive at the front desk and the boss is not around, it might give you a valuable insight in the way that Irex is behaving towards you all...

In the manual (or short reference?) there was somewhere written that if during the installation of downloaded software & tools something went wrong or the device is turned off its no problem. Simpy reset the device and download again.

Just if you do a firmware update the device is in danger when update hangs up or device is turned off. At least so it was written ...

Yes, indeed :) Only the lamp i have is probably too heavy for the usb port. While the divice seems very well made, the usb port will probably not survie it, since you move the iLiad all the time and forces may be too strong. Gotta find a lighter one.

But if that light is designed for a notebook it would be the idea to mount it on top of your screen where it will illuminate your keyboard from there.

That could mean that if you stick it on top of your iLiad that the opening angle of the LED is to small to illuminate your complete iLiad screen. Even if it would illuminate the whole screen it could show annoying darker areas.

NatCh
07-14-2006, 11:04 AM
(shrug) It looks to be adjustable to some extent -- maybe Tribble can try it out and let us know (pictures perhaps?)

This (http://www.consolefever.com/customer/product.php?productid=1236&XCARTSESSID=bac32fc02e458828e0d49d3cabe086ba) could possibly be a better option as the LED illuminates a tube so the light is spread over a much bigger angle. But the problem is that you only know when you test it.

Another posibiity is using the LightWedge (operated by batteries), see:
http://www.amazon.com/LightWedge-Paperback-LED/dp/B0001MRGKE/sr=1-3/qid=1152901013/ref=sr_1_3/103-7409320-8812640?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden

It has a lot of good reviews (both the normal and the "harry potter" version).

What I don't know is if the light distributor would light the entire iliad screen or not, and if it can be adjusted for the top or right sides of the iliad.

If the LightWedge worked with the iliad, it would be fantastic :-).

This lightwedge doesn't clamp to the reader, so you should be holding it against the iLiad. And it probably covers the page flip bar, so you'll have to lift it to change pages. Besides, i'ts designed to be in direct contact with paper but the iLiad has a glass screen and the frame probably will avoid direct contact so there might be glare. It doen't sound so great to me.

I've got my iLiad last weekend.
I plugged in the power cord to charge the battery and
configured wireless.
Then I started the software-update.
After two seconds the message "Download complete", so it told to me.
But I cannot see any entry in the Download history.
Software version is V2.4 .

Transferring PDF's from PC to iLiad works good. Also to read a file from a
USB-Stick is without any problem.
Only, after pressing the Notes key I am missing the sketchboard.xeb.
So far so good.

The empty download history is to be expected, sinc your iLiad has the newest software version installed, so there was nothing to download.

As for notetaking. You can take any jpg or bmp and draw on it. it gets saved as originalname_note.jpg (or bmp) and there you have your note. But you can only have one note per image. if you open the original image and draw again, the .._note gets overwritten. if you open the .._note file, you can add to the drawing.

i just added the xeb file, so you can put that in your notes folder. And to draw (and see drawings) in the xeb you have to turn on drawing by clicking on the greyed out button in the left bottom corner.

R2D2
07-17-2006, 09:11 AM
you have to push the on switch to the left for 2 seconds.

Apparently I am stupid:

There is the circular button in the upper right corner. Pressing it - short or long - lead to nothing.

Then there are the navigation buttons on the left hand side of the device. Nothing happens when you press them too.

Finally there are the folder button at the bottom of the device. Nothing happens there as well.

When plugging the iLiad to the travel hub and the travel hub to the power outlet the LED will be red. But as I said: Nothing else happens.

So what am I doing wrong???

tribble
07-17-2006, 09:17 AM
yes, on the bottom of the device is a little silver switch. it says on/off next to it. You have to push that to the left for 2 seconds to turn the iliad on (or was ist 2 seconds to turn it off) but that should work. My battery was quite full, when i got it. So you should be good to go.

There are two kinds of people.

The ones who read manuals carefully, do everything by the numbers and look up everything before trying anything.
Then there are the ones who get a new device, start fiddling with buttons, press anything that can be pressed, immediately start poking the innards with screwdrivers and who only get a manual when things get rough.

Now the first ones know how everything (should) work, they've got it all figured out.
Nothing ever goes wrong with these people.

The second kind work in places like Chernobyl, the bridge of the Titanic and at the landingpost of the Hindenburg.
They have much, much more fun!! :)

Actually, you can't blame him. He doesnt have a manual. Its on the iLiad, which he has to turn on, to be able to read, how to turn it on :D

And the on/of switch is well hidden next to the connector port. You dont easily recognize it a son/off switch. And even then, pressing it will probably only break the device. You have to push it to the left, and if you have large hands, you will have to ask your little neighbours kids to do it for you :D

But once the power management is ready you shuld almost never need to turn it on/off agein :) MUAHAHAHAHAH :rolleyes5

Hi tribble,

it's now installed. But, you wrote something about clicking a greyed out button. Which one ? After openening the xeb file there are four buttons in the left on the corner. And there's no button with a greyed out pencil on it.

OK, it's lovely but I'm having trouble getting it online. I've got it plugged into my wired network via ethernet, and it's also found and recognised my nearest wireless AP, but when I try to connect it just says "Unsuccessful".

I went to their website and registered and it sent me a username (my email address) and a password (which I'm not sure I can even enter into the iliad since I haven't found out how to enter '#' character yet!). Plus an activation link, which I followed. Filled out the form there and changed my password.

I put the new, changed password into the Iliad config page, entered my username as "stinky ox" and my email address as what it is - is this correct procedure?

I'd like to at least see a successful logon - I'll be wanting those software updates!

any advice from other users?

Your username is the same as your email address Stinky...
The unsuccessful connection attempt could be due to DHCP problem or some other router thingy. For me it was that my router was only allowed to give out 5 IP's (I set that up some time...) and already had them all reserved for static routing...so the Iliad didn't receive an IP and I got errors for both WLAN and Wireless.

Chekc your settings and try again.

stinky ox
07-18-2006, 06:39 AM
Bah, still not working. Doesn't help that there is *no* diagnostic stuff at all displayed, just the message "failed". The router is set to issue DHCP to everything, and everything else on the LAN is fine, the xbox360 connects fine on the wired side and even the Ninty DS connects from the wireless.

I *need* to get this thing online, I'll need those software updates!

Bit disappointed that this is proving tricky, actually. Effortless connectivity is necessary these days, especially with a device that appears to give no helpful diagnostic info at all and which has no way of configuring manual settings...

stinky ox
07-18-2006, 06:44 AM
ah, I think I sorted it, extended the range of DHCP addresses and retried. It displayed "connecting to server" then "download complete".

Jeez, I didn't think I had more than 10 things on my lan needing addresses... guess I do! :D

btw ... is there a way to update/flash the device offline (via usb/network)?
they should provide a way to download the updates 'manually' and install them.
you know, there are still people out there w/o wlan (not me, oooooh no)

stinky ox
07-18-2006, 07:11 AM
You can plug it in to the wired network too, so no problems even if you don't have wifi :). Don't know about installing updates without being online yet though (mine didn't actually do any updating since it's already got the latest version of the software in it).

DHer
07-18-2006, 07:44 AM

stinky ox
07-18-2006, 07:55 AM
Well, first impressions so far are very positive. I'll get the moaning out of the way first - the recharge and connections through the supplied pod *are* a bit clunky; the umbilical that connects the pod to the iLiad as mentioned before is a bit stiff, and if you're doing aught but laying the thing flat when it's connected you do worry a bit about putting a strain on the thin little connector. I'd've preferred power, USB and eth ports on one of the edges like on my origami - the bottom edge is fat enough for them I'd've thought.

The display is really lovely. Just like paper you do need to be in reasonable light to read. Out in the sunshine it's *stunning* (at *last* a device I can use outdoors!). The device is light and comfortable to hold. At the moment of course you really need the *right* PDFs to read with it since there's no zoom option yet but we all know that the software is unfinished at the moment. What's there is eminently usable if you have stuff that's natively the right size.

I am getting the same trouble that others have with intermittent recognition of my SD card - sometimes I need to re-insert it a few times before it gets read correctly. I suspect this may be due to the fact that it takes quite a deep push to get it to lock in, and sometimes it comes out again and requires a second push. Perhaps it starts to read it and then when it disappears again gets confused so when you do get it to go in it doesn't have the index. Maybe adding a short delay before reading the index would fix that, I dunno.

Annotation seems to work well, with the display being updated quicker than I thought it would be. Mine came with no templates - thanks to those who put the missing content online :).

Er... I just went outside to take some pics of it working in the sun. Went to my CF menu to load a PDF (one I'd successfully loaded before), and it's hung on loading.

And I mean *completely* hung. It just shows the second page of my CF index, the little green light in the top left is flickering gently (and gets brighter if I get the stylus out and bring it near to the screen, so something is still alive in there) but no controls do *anything*. I've tried the on/off switch but no amount of sliding it, sliding and holding it for a few seconds or whatever will do anything at all. It is completely unresponsive to all commands.

How in hell do I reset it?

I remembers me when I was looking for some free wifi in Madrid early this year. After locating a signal, I entered in a pub, went to the bar, asked for a beer, opened the portable keyboard, then mounted the Nokia 770 on it, and a waiter asked "that is a computer?". Not a PDA, but a "computer".

As for the e-ink, the reaction of my friends from humanities were mixed. They apreciated that it does not hum (humanities people are very sensitive to the humming of computers) and that it is a better screen that the usual LCD, but they also did some valid luddite-like remarks. We got also some discussion about how people hate technology because they usually are offered with defective products.

I found that sometimes booting the iLiad with an SD in hung it, popping the SD out and restarting it seems to work. I guess there are issues reading the SD at boot anyway because I *always* need to unplug and re-plug the SD after a cold boot in order to get a dist of files on it.

Regarding the stylus stuff I suspect that's another software issue that needs addressing. When you place the stylus in the holder it's supposed to register that it's there and turn off stylus sensing. If you leave it out for 3 minutes away from the screen, then the sensing is turned off and you have to re-holster the stylus and take it out again to turn it on again.

I've found that sometimes if you put the stylus back in during a page turn or some operation where the iLiad is busy (green light on or flashing lots) it doesn't seem to register that it's gone back in. So next time you get it out (if you've left it longer than 3 minutes) it doesn't seem to work at all, and you have to put it in and get it out again to turn on sensing.

These are annoying little niggles but basically software issues that need tweaking, and we all knew we were getting unfinished system software; I am sure they will all be addressed in future updates :).

tribble
07-20-2006, 09:11 AM
Yes, SD slot has a few problems. Mine didnt register my 2GB transcend card at all. And as you i always have to reinsert the card after restart to get recognized. But they said SD preformance should be better with OS 2.5

And for the stylus, they need an icon inj the iconbar. Its just to weird, if your pen suddenly doesnt work.

Mine was in exception in Paris too, but this morning it changed to "in transit..." (and yes, the line about the exception dissapeared, leaving only the "left dusseldorf" one). And a couple of hours later there was a friendly man from UPS asking for me in the door :-b

Thanks for the good wishes. Enjoy yours (don't brick it!). :D

I hope so... a couple of self compiled apps shouldn't brick it, nope?

I have two possible friendly men from UPS who'll be coming to see me, I know them well, I'm guessing who's turn it'll be. :)

Hehehehe... hope not!

(Good luck to arivero, too, and if you phone the 902 number, they might be able to tell you the the current status at least, such as "out on delivery", they told me)

Yep, they told me that, too. THe UPS website, on the other hand, seems to be failing to interfece with the spanish parcels.

My package history seems different to yours. I never had any reference to Paris or Barcelona. It departed from Dusseldorf to HERNE-BOERNIG, DE, and then it changed to 'in transit' to Madrid. It's been stuck at that for several days. I hope I'll get it today, the eagerness is getting annoying!

ElaHuguet
07-24-2006, 05:31 AM
Yes, but notice how when it comes into Spain domain, the info stops right there? Huh! I hope you get it too. :)

LittleTalker
07-24-2006, 05:36 AM
Well, the info actually stopped since it left herne-boering. It's been 'in transit' ever since. Or did you mean something else?

ElaHuguet
07-24-2006, 05:52 AM
My guess is that from Herne-Boering it should have reached some place in Spain, and you never got that info, same as Antartica and me (and arivero, I think), so we all have "in transit" having left some place in Europe, but it's never come into Spain. Fact is, it HAS come into Spain, so UPS here has some problem with their tracking info, which is why my iLiad is floating about in limbo, having left Dusseldorf on the 19th and not arrived anywhere since then. ;)

Yeah, mine left Herne-Boering for "export" and that was all. Today the girl in the 902 phone told me it was already in on delivery in Zaragoza. I was confident it was because the other ones adressed to spain were told to be near delivery too.

But it is 1:14 and it does not arrive. Lot better when you live in a small town.

I am remembered of this joke where you are asked if you want to go to the German hell or to the Spanish hell. The one where the torture is in theory the same: that each hour one demon brings a bucket of shit and feeds it into you with a shovel.

ElaHuguet
07-24-2006, 06:24 AM
LOL LOL LOL... I think I prefer Spanish hell, the demon would be late, he'd forget the bucket, the shit had got lost somewhere, the shovel wasn't working today, how weird, oh dear there's a hole in the bucket (There's a hole in my bucket, dear Eliza, dear Eliza... do you know that song?)

Then again, in Madrid you always have to wait twice for everything. And we are in fact rebuilding the whole damn town at this moment (our major really wants to go into history books even if he pisses all of us in the process). So I guess it's normal to wait longer.

Got home, been playing since. Did some fussing with Gutenberg's Captain Blood. Stripped cr/lf & replaced w/^p marks as appropriate, then corrected for US size & converted to .pdf. Wow. Also loaded several downloaded from manybooks. Need to rename files.

Only odd thing so far (aside from my need to move faster than the machine) was that I couldn't seem to delete a .pdf from the menu system, only via the PC link.

WOW! My iLiad was supposed to ship today, instead when I got home there it was!

I already ran into my first problem though... you can only connect to the iDS service to update software etc. through an ethernet or wireless connection. I don't have either (I have a modem that has firewire). Grrrrr. I guess no updated software for me tonight :( I'll have to figure out what to do tomorrow.

This thing is just TOO cool though! The screen is very, very nice!

Has the update started?! Euro should be on July 25 now, right?
I just connect my iLiad to iDS, it says "Download completed", then it jumps to "Download History", and nothing here. It seems not to be the update process in manuals. Has anbody done the update?

Maybe someone should build a little backdoor (cronjob, etc.) so that we can fish the password out (if that is the new security).

ok, what about a startup script in rd5.d that sets the root password and starts the sshd if not already started and runs wired.sh?

That would be an solution. We can only hope, that they don't fiddle with the wired.sh and wireless.sh...

Indeed it is the 25th here in the Netherlands at this moment.
As I understand, download history so far has always been empty after installing a new version.
The download history is more for downloading content I think.
Could be wrong though :)

You can check your software version by going to the menu, choose Iliad settings and looking in the right upper corner.

I wouldn't wait for version 2.5 today if I were you.
Past Irex deadlines have proven to be somewhat erm... flexible.

You have the same exact problem I have. I would call customer support ASAP and they will contact you through email to send you a box and postage to ship your Illiad back for repair. They notified me on the first, but I have yet to receive the box. If I do not get it today I am going to email them back to find out what the turnaround is.
