View Full Version : Anyone in the US/Canada receive an invitation?
oliverbogler 06-29-2006, 08:43 AM iRex shop opens to US customers in July: iRex Technologies have recently received the electronics approvation to ship goods to US and Canada. In fact the iRex Shop will be taking orders from selected business to business customers by July 1st. from Alex, in this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6878).
Since it is now the morning of June 29, and we have less than two business days before July 1st, I am curious to know whether US/Canada invites have started. If you have received one, could you please post that you did? If you could include when you got it, and whether you ordered, and if so what your order number is etc, this would be of significant interest to us in the US/Canada.
I have been keeping my eye on the currency pull down of the iRexshop and haven't see anything except Euros, so perhaps this indicates a delay.
CommanderROR 06-29-2006, 09:19 AM Well...they did state that they will open for orders for the US from the 1st of July...so that would be saturday...I guess you'll have to wait at least another 2 days...probably till Monday.

Usually doing something 'by a certain date' means on that day, or before (at least that is what my bosses think...).
I am sure you are right, but then they are really doing it by July 3rd.
As an aside, launching during the July 4th weekend in the US - not great timing...

Since they initially claim they want b2b customers, the currency options may not immediately change.
I travel a lot. If you want to buy something in Euros from the US it shoudn't be a big deal - although if you don't buy things in alternate currencies you might want to give a heads up to Visa or whoever you use. Money is money.
Easy exhange rate info can be found at www.oanda.com - US/Euro conversion for interbank rates is on the front page. Use the drop down menu to get the estimated credit card rate.

Yes - that is correct, of course.
But since they have the pull down menu on the shop site for different currencies, it suggests that they plan on offering pricing in more than Euros, but have not yet implented it.
Anyway, another thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6898) suggests that they are busy getting the Visa billing issue resolved, rather than opening the US store... one problem at a time, perhaps.
Riocaz 06-29-2006, 11:25 AM They might be intending to implement that for general release...
But your right if they don't intend to have payment in other currencies yet, why have the drop down.

Because they have always been a big tease.
oliverbogler 06-30-2006, 01:51 PM Well, the close of business has passed in Europe, and not a sign of a US release by the July 1st, self-imposed, deadline...
Gameboy70 06-30-2006, 02:31 PM I would expect that a US release date would be denoted for US, not European, timezones. I would check back Monday, 7/2.

Really - you think that iRex has an independent US operation? Jeff, their US rep, doesn't even have an email with @irextechnologies.com.
I would be very surprised if all sales aren't managed through the same webstore, run by people in Eindhoven, and so I think it is unlikely they'll send invites or open outside of business hours there.
This also makes it more likely that we'll see a July 3 opening - there isn't much business being done here in American on July 3rd.
TaKir 06-30-2006, 03:44 PM Irex has one more site - www.iliad.nl (Dit domein wacht op de grote doorbraak) - "This field waits for the large opening". <babelfish translated>
TaKir 06-30-2006, 03:49 PM UPDATE - SHIPPING OF ORDERS WILL BEGIN JULY 3rd

Riocaz 06-30-2006, 03:57 PM That assumes someone has an invite with which to order Takir :-P
The GreatGonzo 07-01-2006, 10:02 AM OK - just to recap and see if I got this straight...
In order to be able to order an Iliad from the US as a non-business person,
one needs to
- leave an email address at the "request info" spot on the Irex website and
- wait for the whole "sales to the US" thing to kick in next week, at which point one will receive an invitation to order.
Is that right? Or do I actually need to pretend that I'm some sort of business representative or programmer? And have an official-looking address?
Yes, I'll cheat and lie and be all-round morally questionable...
'cause I REALLY REALLY REALLY want this thing for my summer vacation ... REALLY.
CommanderROR 07-01-2006, 10:07 AM well...you can try cheating, but it probably won't work.
Dropping them a note, saying you're a mobilereader and would like to buy the device despite the fact that it's not ready yet might work...but there is no guarantee.
I have no idea how they decide who gets invited and when...seems a bit random with some private persons included while some business customers get left out...
does anyone acutally understand iRex' system?
VillageReader 07-01-2006, 11:41 AM does anyone acutally understand iRex' system?
Grasshopper, that is a good question.
tribble 07-01-2006, 12:52 PM well, if there were a system, one might understand ;)
Riocaz 07-01-2006, 03:48 PM I sincerely doubt iRex understand it.
oliverbogler 07-01-2006, 05:04 PM I think it seems fairly certain that no one in the US/Canada has yet received an invite - at least no one has posted that they have, and there is no other currency yet on that drop down (see posts above for a discussion about the meaning of that).
I like to think that I have not received an invite because US sales are still on hold, not because I am not on the list! But I have no way of knowing at the moment - that is why I would be grateful if US/Canade people posted to this thread when they got an invite.
Here is hoping for Monday. Maybe an invite is a consolation prize for us, while you lucky europeans get shipping!!
oliverbogler 07-03-2006, 06:55 AM My invite arrived this morning at 4:20 am :D - no, I was sleeping...
Just ordered iLiad - order number 500. Came to $813, but the shipping isn't be right because only European countries were available in the account settings. I was also charged VAT because of it, so this should go away, and the shipping should go up.
Anyway - the email that came with the invite said the USA was going to get shipments in July.
Happy 3rd of July everyone! :xmas:
TaKir 07-03-2006, 07:46 AM My invite arrived this morning at 4:20 am :D - no, I was sleeping...
Just ordered iLiad - order number 500.
They have not so many orders...
ThinkNeXT is # 399 (16 June, 2006)
CommanderROR is # 47x, (26th of June) and you are only # 500...
In the light of this http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6927
it seems to me, their B2B model is absolutely insolvent, it just failed....
Riocaz 07-03-2006, 08:17 AM Takir,
Thats a number being taken out of context...
That could be 450 orders of 100-1000 units each and 50 (us) of 1.
You can't assume anything from that.
CommanderROR 07-03-2006, 09:03 AM we can all stop checking our emails by the way...there will be no shipping before thrusday...another delay...well...we'll just have to spam the forums until then...^^
oliverbogler 07-03-2006, 02:05 PM I realize almost everyone in the US is off on a break to celebrate the birth of this nation, but I am curious whether anyone else this side of the atlantic has been invited and has ordered - perhaps someone from Canada ;)
ribrdb 07-04-2006, 03:41 AM No invitation yet. :-(
oliverbogler 07-04-2006, 12:31 PM Thanks for CommanderROR US folks are now getting invites - see here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6933) .
I notice that my address has been updated to reflect USA, and the drop down currency menu now includes US$. Things are moving nicely, and I can almost see the UPS man coming up my path...!!
oliverbogler 07-07-2006, 05:43 AM Well, my iRex hit on my Visa on July 6th, so it seems that the US Visa billing issue has been resolved. :D
My order status has not yet changed in the iRexshop, as of this morning... - still 'confirmed, processing'
BTW, it came to $813.
One step closer (and still behind the Europeans, who started shipping today).
oliverbogler 07-12-2006, 09:28 AM My order (#500) just went to 'paid, not shipped'...
Mine also, Paid not shipped. Good sign :)
CommanderROR 07-12-2006, 10:11 AM yep...maybe the devices finally made it to Dueren and they did a quick count and found that they could ship some more...now all they need to do is actually SHIP!!!!!!!
OOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM
puh...that was close...
