View Full Version : Astak 6" basic (V3)
Counter 12-23-2009, 07:45 AM Can you (Astak/Robert) please post the latest Astak firmware?
How hard can that be beyond telling the webmaster to do it now!
Thanks
Mark
griffonwing 12-23-2009, 10:56 AM It was my understanding that they are still tweaking the v3 version, so they can't post it until it's completed.
KarenH 12-23-2009, 11:36 AM Newest firmware update for the 6" EZ Reader Basic (dated 12/22/09) is now up on the website.

Ralph Sir Edward 12-23-2009, 02:34 PM Not so sweet....Upgraded firmware to by backup Astak, put in my SD chip. Started reading an Epub e-book. Got page numbers, can't seem to find out how to turn off. Check website, no luck. The page number step on the text. Not acceptable.....

That is how it works for now. Also you cannot change the font type, only the size, unless you edit each and every book's css. Luckily Caluibre helps with that.
but yes, it is annoying how the (unreadable anyway) page number "steps on the text".

true, but it is not a new problem. It has always been there for ADE and is also on every other brand of eBook device. I don't see how anyone can blame this release for a problem that was not addressed at all and may not be fixable unless Adobe does it.

Counter 12-23-2009, 04:08 PM Could it be a problem with the formatting of that specific book(s)?
My wife just downloaded a new book in Adobe Epub and I checked it with all 9 zoom levels. The page numbers are to the right and never go inside the margin of text. Looks normal.

So I go back to FBreader in OI. No page numbers. (Other problems, but no page numbers....)

Yes, that is always an option. No DRM support but FBReader is getting better although not quite up to ADE IMHO.

I imagine that increasing the RH margin might fix it, but you lose screen space.

That is exactly what I do with epubs. The other three margins I reduce in size. Some fat three digit numbers may sometimes go near a letter occasionally; but it is still readable.

FWIW I use 13 as the R margin and 15.5 as the base font.
The results are tiny numbers and less than 2 letters space lost.

That's a good idea regarding the larger base font. I had been using 10. Definitely will try this to shrink the numbers. Thanks TheDucks. :D

I hope it works as well on a V3.
Counter 12-24-2009, 03:12 AM how do you change the margin?
Javed 12-24-2009, 03:19 AM how do you change the margin?
In Calibre. Go to preferences, conversion, page setup, margins. :)
Counter 12-24-2009, 03:21 AM oh ok.. I knew how to do that just thought there might have been a setting on the Astak I was missing. Thank you
Mark
Javed 12-24-2009, 03:23 AM No, none in the reader. Your welcome.
Counter 12-24-2009, 06:38 AM Ok.. I am not finding anything wrong with the firmware. I really can't count margin/ page numbering issues because that seems to happen with modified ebooks. Another epub I downloaded works fine as well.
Nice to have the latest Astak firmware that matches Jink's latest.! Thanks again Robert

Dear Counter:
You are very welcome! Glad we could get this done for you and others.
I am very happy that you are here posting on our forum; and we value everyone's insight!
The next two weeks or so will be a mess due to the CES show. Astak effectively transports all staff to that show to man the booth. However, much more will get done in actuality as we can talk face-to-face with the factories and get more done than we can by phone or email. Astak already knows (but cannot even hint on specifics) that we will have major news to announce at CES. The models for all of 2010 will be shown (at least in prototype) so we hope that the media and reviewers will pick up the stories!!
cloggy 01-03-2010, 10:45 AM I've tried OpenInkpot for a while but a few days ago I installed the latest Astak firmware. With regards to the page numbers, I too used Calibre to set the right margins at 16 to avoid the paged numbers being merged with the text.
One thing that I really like with the LBOOK's version of the firmware is the copy/delete/move functionality (BTW, this is missing in OpenInkpot too..). I think the ePUB books are displayed far better with the HANLIN firmware (or clones of it) than with the FBReader used by OpenInkpot.
