I find the Aluratek's to be more attractive, but of course since the books are available elsewhere (including here at MR!), I wouldn't let the lists be the deciding factor. I am looking forward to the reviews of the folks here who have purchased a Libre regarding that device's firmware.

If I can get some time to do so tomorrow in the daylight, I'll post some photos of the Libre displaying a few of the books off the included card. I am overall VERY pleased with it, though there is no PDF reflow and that does take some getting used to coming from my Sony 505. I'm loading it up with books for my son currently, and I have had zero issues with the firmware, loading files is simple drag and drop, and it displays ePub beautifully.

What else would you like to know? I'll do my best to answer.

I was looking at the Ectaco and Aluratek websites yesterday and on both you can download the book files from the website... so which books you get free shouldn't be a deciding factor at all since you can get ALL of them free.

dls, I've just come back from the Aluratek website, and I don't believe that you can download the books that come with the Libre from their website.

If I'm wrong, please provide the link.

I bought the Aluratek Libre, while there is a "CLICK HERE FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO DOWNLOAD eBOOKS" it is only a .pdf for a "Guide to Purchase & Download Ebooks from www.ebooks.com".

for the information regarding the ebooks from Ectaco, just downloaded them from http://www.jetbook.net/downloads.php/?refid=29532

My books usually run $12.99-$14.99. Adding the cost of shipping, or the sales tax plus gasoline, I figure that my $117 jetBook Lite will pay for itself with 8 public domain books.

I am enjoying the three included books I am reading now - Henry David Thoreau's Walden, Sun Tzu's The Art of War and Edward Berens' Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome.

There are a number of other included books that I want to get to soon. I'm thinking that the device will almost pay for itself before I have even downloaded anything!

Depending on retention of binary Newsgroups that your newsgroup server provides, you
may still find ebooks to download from such as: alt.binaries.e-book.palm

The UseNet is dying, so many of the "alt.binaries.e-book" newsgroups are empty.

(You should try all the spellings for ebook {e-book,ebooks,e-books,ebooks} in the
"Newsgroup Subscriptions" search window.)

I got my partner the Aluratek Libre. With respect to the 100 books included on the SD card, they are all just txt files, and it looks like they were all pulled from Project Gutenberg (the half dozen or so I opened all had the PG introduction). Nothing special since anyone can download all of the files from PG, though it would be a bit tedious downloading 100 in a row.

I was disappointed that they weren't EPUB files, but they look decent enough on the Libre.

Just got my Libre and decided to open up "Leaves of Grass" and had to wade through pages of Project Gutenberg intro and then the book started mid-page, which I thought was odd. Then I checked and saw that all those books were in the .txt format. It'll be interesting to see what other book formats look like on it.

Thanks for the link to the Jetbook books download.

No dictionary and I do not know if one can be installed. I haven't looked into it. I just submitted a support ticket with Aluratek asking about any future dictionary. I will post any response.

Aluratek's response via live chat:

Pete: Welcome to Aluratek's Live Help chat! What may I help you with today?
you: Hey Pete, The libre any chance on a dictionary in firmware?
Pete: There are no plans to include it in the operating system but a dictionary may be added as a free book on the LIBRE. However, I do not know when it will be added.

What good is a dictionary that's just a separate book? NONE AT ALL!
