thianliongpatpoh 08-15-2009, 11:04 AM Good info!
This ebook release coincides with my plan to read the Soul Identity this long weekend. I snatched the first book while it was a freebie from amazon back then. Now I can read them back-to-back!
I'm *SO* glad this has been released. Soul Identity was one of the "best of 2008" for me.
candytx 08-15-2009, 11:32 AM I, too, really enjoyed Soul Identity - more than I thought I would. Didn't realize there would be a sequel so WooHoo!
denbatch 08-15-2009, 03:12 PM your posts about "soul identity" warm my heart -- i'm so glad you enjoyed it.
i hope you all enjoy "soul intent" as much as i enjoyed writing it. it took me 25 months, a ton of research, and 7 drafts to get it complete, and i'm thrilled with the results. now, finally, it's your turn :-)
dennis
Dennis -- welcome to MobileRead. We're so glad to see authors stopping by to talk about their books. I'm one who has been really talking up Soul Identity since I read it last year, and I'm thrilled to get the sequel.
If you don't know already, there are quite a few (probably much more than half) of the MobileRead population who don't have a Kindle. Many of them live outside the US and have absolutely no legitimate way to get one. So, unless you have an exclusive distribution deal with Amazon, everyone would really appreciate it if you released your book in other formats or through other stores. Jeffrey Carver and Steve Jordan have offered books from their own web sites with payment via PayPal. Other authors have used Smashwords to distribute their books in various formats.
Please don't let this be your only post here. We're glad you've joined us and are looking forward to talking with you about your books.
rcuadro 08-15-2009, 03:46 PM Hell, I still have not read the first one even though I bought it. I have so many books in the cue to read it is not even funny lol

hi elsi:
thanks for the welcome -- and a big, big thank you for all the nice words you wrote about soul identity on your blog and on various forums. i'm thrilled you enjoyed it enough to call it one of the best of 2008.
my own "sole" intent was to release simultaneously on paperback, mobipocket, and smashwords on 9/9/9. everything was in order, all files were uploaded, but for whatever reason, the kindle folks jumped the gun and posted "soul intent" yesterday. i'm not going to take it down: too many readers seem happy. and maybe i'll get some early reviews.
so, if somebody out there doesn't have a kindle, take heart: only three more weeks before you can get it from mobipocket or smashwords.
(and if you really can't wait, you can send me a really nice email at denbatch@gmail.com, promise me that you'll post a review, and i'll email you a pdf, prc, or word file). i'm easy this way.

I know I've posted 'way too much in this thread, but I wanted to tell Dennis that he's got another hit here. I'm just starting chapter 54 and I have a feeling that I won't be going to sleep tonight until I finish the book. By the dots at the bottom of my Kindle screen, it looks like I'm slightly over 80% of the way through the book. (Yep, did the math, location 5586/6696 = 83%)
Guys, this book is every bit as thrilling as the first one.
Dennis -- get busy! Write more!
Update 20 August -- Finished this early this morning. Great book.
Dennis, I need to know how many pages the printed edition will have.

hi elsi:
i'm so THRILLED that you enjoyed it!
the printed edition has 276 pages. i just received (tonight) the proof, and it's gorgeous :-)
i'd love to send you a signed copy of the paperback version once it comes in: if you'd like to receive it, please send me an email at denbatch@gmail.com with your address, and i'll send you one once they reach me.
(btw: this offer is open to anybody who reads soul intent and writes a thoughtful review somewhere--blog, review site, bookseller--between now and the end of september. just send me the link of where it's posted and email me your address to denbatch@gmail.com, and i'll send you a signed copy)

Come on, now, Els... I already read the book and posted a review, get with it, girl! ;) Well worth a read, then I read Disturb by JA Konrath, which was fine, the short story the author included afterwards totally screwed with my head though LOL - keep up, girl!

tselling 08-21-2009, 08:06 PM I enjoyed Soul Intent, but I think I liked Soul Identity more. Maybe because the concept was new in the first book. But I thought both books were very well written. Many thanks to Dennis Batchelder for these great books at a such a good bargain! I hope you write some more great stuff!
Come on, now, Els... I already read the book and posted a review, get with it, girl! ;) Well worth a read, then I read Disturb by JA Konrath, which was fine, the short story the author included afterwards totally screwed with my head though LOL - keep up, girl! I bought Soul Intent as soon as I saw that it was available, but I *had* intended to be responsible and read some of the books that I owe to swappers at BookObsessed (http://bookobsessed.com) and save Soul Intent for later. But, after reading a couple of posts here and some early reviews online, I pulled it out on the 18th and plunged right in.
I'm trying to keep up, really I am. I love a good road trip. Left home shortly after lunch on Thursday on the first leg (Sanger to Amarillo) of my trip to Denver. I put 8 owed-TBR paperbacks into the car along with my Kindle & Sony readers. Rode the rest of the way to Denver today and other than supper with friends in Colorado Springs, I read the whole time. So far I have read two complete books & I'm 1/2 way through a third.

I'm so irresponsible with my books, thankfully I don't owe anyone anything as far as swapping (I've been neglecting BO a lot). But I'm horrible about stopping everything to read a book I've either been waiting on (like when whatever comes after Shanghai Girls comes out, I'll be all over it) or if something catches my fancy randomly (like the Soul Intent sequel, didn't even know there would be a sequel!) :)
I keep forgetting you are in Texas, but as I recall, you are way north or West (Austin here). Ah well...
How do you like the Sony? I'm pretty much married to Amazon already so I didn't bother to look too closely at it. Do you use both? In what way? I'm being all nosy and probably hijacking Dennis' thread :)

when you both are saying such nice things about soul intent, it's hardly hijacking.
getting bumped up in a reading order is like getting asked to join a newly-opened checkout lane at the grocery story... you think karma is finally kicking in :-)
pilotbob 08-22-2009, 12:20 PM Two books for a buck, and Elsi's raving... I'm in... just bought them both for my Kindle. (I hope they aren't Topaz).

I am in Texas, due north of the DFW airport about 50 miles, only 2-3 miles east of I-35.
I do the majority of my reading on the Kindle -- there are two reasons: first, it just feels more comfortable in my hands; second, the books have been priced much lower, though Sony's pricing is beginning to catch up. I bought the Sony as an assistant to making books and then my hubby gave me the cover with the built-in lightwedge last Christmas. So, I try to have a book queued up on the Sony when we're going to be traveling at night since the lightwedge doesn't bother his night vision half as much as a traditional book light or a flashlight.
Now, to get this post back on topic ... I posted a review on Goodreads last night. I can't figure out how to get a URL that goes only to my review, but my userID on Goodreads is Elsi (http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/731092-elsi), same as here.

JSWolf 08-27-2009, 07:43 PM Knowing how sometimes Smashwords can be for ePub conversions, would I be better off purchasing Soul Identiy from Mobipocket and converting to ePub or going for the ePub on Smashwords?

pilotbob 09-02-2009, 11:48 PM So as I was reading _Soul Intent_ the sequel to _Soul Identity_ I was thinking what other titles he could use for future books.
Soul Searching
Soul Man
Soul Survivor
Heart and Soul (yea, not as good)
Soul Path
Living Soul
Soul Mate
Soul Brother
Soul Food
Soul Music
Lost Soul
Any more?
BOb
I like Soul Survivor -- that conjures up several ideas.
Soul Music, Soul Searching and Lost Soul also have promise. Actually, most of the titles you've come up with could work ... though "Heart & Soul" is my least favorite.

Not as 'cheeky' as "Ah! soul" though :)
Thanks for the books Dennis, have read and thoroughly enjoyed both, totally recommended.
denbatch 09-04-2009, 05:57 PM i love the suggestions for future book titles, especially since i need help naililng the next one. here's my own thoughts:
so far, i've had a little play on words going between soul/sole. i'd like to continue that, if i could. these two are like that:
Soul Survivor
Filet of Soul (it's weird, but then again, so am i)
also, i've got an S-I initial thing going. some ideas could be:
Soul Integrity
Soul Intensity
Soul Infinity
now if i could just find a way to continue the soul/sole theme AND find a word that starts with I... that would be perfect :-)
any ideas?
pilotbob 09-04-2009, 06:17 PM now if i could just find a way to continue the soul/sole theme AND find a word that starts with I... that would be perfect :-)
any ideas?
Yea, I noticed the Sole/Soul thing..
Hmm....
Soul Indignity
Soul Interference (what?)
Soul Interest
Soul Island
Soul Industry
Not I words that play on Soul/Sole
Soul Possession
Soul Ownership
Soul Use
Soul Cause
Soul Heir (hey this one might be good... you inheriet your soul line)
BOb
I wouldn't belabor the Soul Ixxxx issue. If you deviate now it will be easy to craft additional books in this series without force-fitting a title. You could bring in any appropriate Soul Ixxxx titles at any time. If, however, book #3 has a Soul Ixxxx title, you're pretty much locked in to those for the entire series.
I vote for Soul Survivor for the next title. It jumped out at me when BOb first posted it and still resonates well.
dreams 09-04-2009, 06:55 PM These books are next up after Verdant Skies..:)
How about?
Soul Intersect
Soul Insight
Soul Image
Soul Invite
Soul Intervention
Soul Interval
Just saw Elsi's post and I see her point. Many readers tend to expect a continuation of series themes once it begins.

We must share a brain, I was thinking the exact same thing... if he goes with an I word for book 3... he can't stop... and as we see finding I words could be difficult.
BOb
denbatch 09-04-2009, 10:27 PM I like soul insight, too.
Elsi, I see your point, but there seem to be many I words. I want my cake, and I wanna eat the darn thing :-)
then again, soul survivor has a nice ring.
Naming is so tricky, especially when you're after patterns.
Maybe I nail down my next theme before I nail down the title. Here's what happened on soul intent: it was almost named stolen identity, because I was enamored with that title. But soul intent turned out to be a much better fit.
columbus 09-05-2009, 03:51 AM Soul survivor sounds good to me! Lots of possibilities for plot
If you want a 'I' how about 'Soul Integration' / Incorporated / Incorporation / Inc / Incognito
candytx 09-05-2009, 09:37 AM Soul Survivor (and Sole Survivor) are so overly done, in my opinion, for various things. I like the idea of sticking with Sole I"something" :-)
Dr. Drib 09-06-2009, 09:50 AM Unable to buy "Soul Identity" - price is not high enough.
Unfortunatley, the author has priced his ebook too cheaply.
Amazon will not accept a penny purchase. Or perhaps it's my bank that will not follow through on a charge card price of one penny.
I recommend the author increase the price to reflect the current state of ebook prices -- and not rock the boat with such cheap pricing. :):):)

In other words, I took care of everything I needed to do while there; but now, for some reason I'm unable to buy this one title. No problem with purchasing books at .99 cents or above - but can't spend a penny. I'll wait until Christmas or later; or perhaps when the price goes up.

I am about 1/2 way through Soul Intent, and while it is ok, I thought Soul Identity was much much better. So, yes, read it first. But, buy the second one... I was silly and didn't get Boyd Morrisons books when they were available... then he went and got a contract with a publisher and had to pull the books from their current distribution.
Now I have to wait to read The Ark. Oh well, plenty of books to read in the mean time.

Unfortunately (and in violation of their agreements with Visa/Mastercard), some banks refuse all small transactions (some at a penny, some at a dollar), claiming it is part of their fraud detection system. They can, if you persist, mark the merchant (Amazon.com) as one where such small transactions are allowed (but won't like it, since it costs them more than the charge to process it),
The easiest solution, of course, is to get yourself a gift certificate. It also cleans up your CC statements not to have all those tiny charges on it.

Yeah -- although I haven't had a charge rejected, my hubby is growling at the large number of small charges on the credit card. I wish that Amazon would allow me to accumulate a bunch of Kindle books into one "order" and submit it all at once. I'd still like to take advantage of the "Buy it now" option directly from the device, but it's rare that I buy just one book when I'm roaming on the web site.

The normal click-one on Amazon does this... if you click-once buy several things within a certain time of each other (maybe even the same day) they are combined into one charge. At least, that is IIRC how it used to work.
I'm not sure why they don't do the same thing for click-once Kindle purchases.
Elsi.... that said, I think I read somewhere that the Gift Card balance is used first when buying with click-once. So, you may want to buy a gift card, apply it to your account and see how that goes.

koland 09-07-2009, 01:16 PM Yeah -- although I haven't had a charge rejected, my hubby is growling at the large number of small charges on the credit card. I wish that Amazon would allow me to accumulate a bunch of Kindle books into one "order" and submit it all at once. I'd still like to take advantage of the "Buy it now" option directly from the device, but it's rare that I buy just one book when I'm roaming on the web site.
Yes, this is how the music works and it's much the same issue - lots of tiny charges, you get the product up front, but they charge you at the end of a day (or a certain charge amount or number of titles, seems a lot of triggers exist). I really wish they would fix the Kindle charges to do the same, although sometimes I really do only buy one a day. Perhaps they want to send a notice to the primary account holder as early as possible, just so you'll notice if your kids (or hubby) are buying books they should not (or a do-it-yourself divorce kit, LOL!).
Another solution would be to let me one-click a Kindle only gift balance that they put on my account and hit my stored CC with, without all the hassle that is entailed currently. They already can separate out promotional balances by which store/product they can be used on (or all those MP3 credits I get would be used for books, here). Of course, making easy for people to set a budget might not be in their best interests.....
roger the rabbit 09-07-2009, 03:36 PM Read both of these & thoroughly enjoyed them though I did think Soul Identity was the better of the two - maybe because the plot elements were not new in Identity - whatever great reads!!

it took me a while to get back here and reply...
thanks, rog. i'm glad you enjoyed them.
i'm tentatively going with "soul integrity" as the name for the next in the series, and i'm going to explore "the right to know". i'd love to get some input from y'all about what you'd like to see covered: any unanswered questions? what would you like to see more of/less of?
lilac_jive 09-15-2009, 02:41 PM I'm almost wrapped up with Soul Identity and I really like it. I'll be getting the next book in the series :D
shighfield 09-15-2009, 02:50 PM I really liked Soul identity; have added Soul Intent to my cart at smashwords!

I don't log on often, I had to today to comment in the 'what are you reading thread' about "The Lost Symbol"
I have to say I found your books far more entertaining and believable than the latest dan brown offering.

yeah, i saw your comment over there, rog... thanks for the compliment, though i'm also reading "the lost symbol" and i also expected to be much more wowed.
too bad my sales don't reflect this. i'm certainly not selling a million each day as mr. brown is, but so far 800 people have purchased "soul intent," and 15,000 bought "soul identity".

rcuadro 09-30-2009, 01:52 PM I finished both Soul Identity and Soul Intent and I have to say that Soul Identity was my favorite of the two because Soul Identity was a great "who done it". Well written and kept me hooked until the end.
Soul Intent, while it was a great story, it was pretty straight forward until nearing the end where the Nazi's came into the picture... and, if you ask me, it was predictable.
I really liked the fact that the books followed each other very well. I read them back to back and it was a joy to read :)
Thanks for the great book!

mores 03-05-2010, 04:10 PM Finished it, and enjoyed it like the first one, maybe even a bit more.
This thing has the stuff for a series, Dennis! Keep 'em coming :)
Now, since my native tongue is german, I simply must point out the errors you made with our german friends' language and terms.
Not sure how to tell you where they are, so maybe just use search and replace.
"Sehr gute, fraulein."
First of all, throughout the book you should replace fraulein with Fräulein. Capitalized and with the Umlaut-A. And this sentence should read "Sehr gut, Fräulein."
Then near the end there is "And I lost five sturmannen doing that.". Should be "And I lost five Sturmmänner doing that."
Sometimes you write "Sturmann" ... should be "Sturmmann"
If you do the mass-replace I'd correct "Goering" too and change it to "Göring". Goering is not false, since the oe may be used when no ö is available - but you do use ü a number of times, so you can go all the way and make it proper german :)
