The four giant satellites in Earth orbit were considered oases for humanity, the first of the habitats humans would move to and escape the growing environmental pressures and hazards of living on the ground.

But when a volcanic eruption threatens to finally ruin Earth's already-collapsing ecosystem, the remaining peoples of Earth demand access to the satellites, and threaten to overwhelm them, thereby dooming all of humanity.

And as the satellites are under siege from below, a desperate gamble for the survival of the satellite Verdant is taken...

The setting may be in the future and high up in Earth orbit, but the elements are taken right out of today's headlines. The characters are also like you and me, trying to preserve their homes and lives. But an unexpected new twist on actual quantum physics theories opens up possibilities that you can't imagine. Verdant Skies is a wonderful look at the future of living in Earth orbit, as well as a warning about the fragility both of our planet, and of the best laid plans...

Steve's book is only $3.50, DRM-free, and available in a host of formats to suit one's specific Reader fetish! :):)

That's a nice-looking page, with very clear instructions. (There's no cluttering BS, as in some other webpages.)

I'm half-way through Verdant Skies and it's great! This is your best work so far, Steve ... I like your stories that are closer to our real lives, not so far in the future. The people and events depicted are more plausible, more likely to happen in our near-future. This one has that in spades.

I am getting a little more time to spend with Verdant Skies and it is really pulling me into all the politics (they never change, no matter what the era:p) and the characters.

I did have a laugh at the following... "managed to hook up to a caboose without an engine." -- hope I quoted that right.:)

Off to cruise a few threads, yard work, and Verdant Skies. Thank you, again, Steve for sharing your work with us.

Verdant Skies seems to be getting a slight back-from-vacation bump... so I'm giving this thread my own bump. Bump!

(I never would have believed so many people would wait until after vaca to buy a good, inexpensive e-book. I guess a lot of people had filled their storage cards before they left, and decided they could wait.)

I'm also getting some great feedback on the book, including from our fellow MR members, so I hope you-all will help me spread the word a bit.

Anybody thought of suggesting e-books as great for back-to-school book reports? Just wondering...

Funny you should ask...

I purposely left the story open-ended, and in fact almost added an epilogue that would have made it even more clear that there could be more to the saga of the Verdant... (Spoiler Alert!)

Unused epilogue: Sergei would get a surprise visit from Anise Lenz, asking him to leave Earth and join them.

There can be more stories... I've got some thoughts sketched out... but nothing that has been committed to. I figured I'd see how well the story did, and see if anyone showed interest in more of them.

You be sure and let us know if that reader has any problems with that ePub file, y'hear?

I've almost finished Verdant Skies as an ePub on my ECO reader, and have noticed some things which may be typos or may be problems with my reader.

- When one opens Chapter 2 the heading is President?s Arrival. On websites the ? usually indicates that a character is present which is not recognised, so I would like to know whether this character is in the original text and whether it is replaced by ? in other ePub readers.

- Throughout the book on my ECO reader CEO is shown as Ceo, COO as Coo, and EO as Eo.

- The phrase 'course heavy beard' occurs where the context calls for 'coarse heavy beard'

- The phrase 'He's tough' occurs where the context calls for 'She's tough' - the conversation is about Calvin's wife.

- A piece of luggage is described as 'autonomic', which I'm more used to seeing when discussing physiology. 'Autonomous' doesn't really work either, since the luggage is governed by a device held by its owner.

- In one of the later chapters Julian's part of a conversation is in italics for no obvious reason.

I hope this helps, and I particularly like to know whether President?s Arrival is seen with other ePub readers.

Thanks for the feedback, Alex. In order:

I have seen that before: It is a reaction to MS Word apostrophes, which are not recognized as standard apostrophes by many non-word apps (same thing with MS quotes). I thought I'd caught those, so I have to look into what reverted them.

- Throughout the book on my ECO reader CEO is shown as Ceo, COO as Coo, and EO as Eo.

That is correct, sir!. In the future, the acronyms CEO, COO and EO are simply used as word-titles, like Captain, and pronounced "See-oh," "Coo" and "EE-oh." That's exactly how I wrote them. (Isn't the future cool?)

- The phrase 'course heavy beard' occurs where the context calls for 'coarse heavy beard'

:smack:

Actually, "autonomic" is passably acceptable, if unique for the situation... it can refer to non-biologic systems. For the other comment, I need more specifics (feel free to message or e-mail me directly).

I hope this helps, and I particularly like to know whether President?s Arrival is seen with other ePub readers.

Chapter 2 started out okay on the Kindle...

Thanks, Dreams. It's nice to know that that the problem is not due to the ECO reader.

And thanks, Pshrynk. I presume you are reading a mobipocket version. I've no idea why this particular problem would occur in an ePub and not in a mobipocket version - presuming of course they had the same source document. Perhaps the mobipocket rendition of HTML is more tolerant as well as being limited and idiosyncratic.

Hi Steve - It's all up to the encodings the reader and font allows. On my BeBook, all the apostrophes and curly quotes showed up as &xxxxx; thingies - boy did that make the dialog ugly! Those are valid html 4 or 5 strings, which should have been OK, but not necessary in iso-8559-1. So I ran it through Sigil, and it turned it into UTF-8, but the BeBook didn't have a Unicode font, so it just used its 8-bit encoded font. So the 16-bit byte pairs got really ugly with spaces included (another little BeBook Bug). I'm still planning some more research into BeBook limitations... I'll let you know what I find.

Steven Lyle Jordan
09-05-2009, 08:22 AM
Good God!

That settles it, I have to replace all of those smart quotes in ePub conversions for sure! And was it ePub that you used on your BeBook, or some other format?

I've been pretty busy with my (ahem) day job recently, but I can see it's already time for e Revision 1 of Verdant Skies. I have to get cracking on that, as soon as I get back from my much-needed 3-day vaca.

pholy
09-05-2009, 01:48 PM
Yes, I downloaded the epub file. As I said, I ran it through Sigil, because it "cleans up" a file - presumably by re-encoding it in UTF-8 - but that didn't work. I also loaded it into my Calibre library, and then exported it, but no change until I exported it as a mobi file. That removed all the &xxx; stuff - looks perfect now. Now I will get back to reading it! I hated to put it down, but those &xxx; things just spoiled the flow. --- Oh, it wasn't just the smart quotes, apostrophes showed up - ’ — … “ ” -- those are from the first chapter. These are valid HTML 4 names, but apparently you do have to call out the correct DTD in your HTML header - see the Wikipoedia : List_of_XML_and_HTML_character_entity_references. Of course, I'm not sure that the BeBook would recognise them even then.
Hope this helps, I want to go back to reading now.

Steven Lyle Jordan
09-05-2009, 11:26 PM
I don't know if the problem was the BeBook's rendering engine, Sibil, Calibre, or my ePub's quality (or all of the above), but it clearly underscores the need for better tools for compliance and conversion. I wrote an essay (http://www.stevejordanbooks.com/essays/universal.htm) on my site about the need in this industry for more devices that read all the popular formats, leaving the consumer to choose their device based on price and features, not on which formats it did or did not read. But conversion engines need to work first, and files need to be compliant in the first place.

I'll have to look closer at my ePub conversions, to make sure they are fully compliant with IDPF standards before I send them out.

Steve,

You have a true talent for creating a future that can be envisioned, and Verdant Skies is yet another gem. The characters were interesting, and the science sneaks up on you without hitting you over the head.

One of my favorite examples occurs when a lead character takes the tram across the station. Steve comments about the view from the trams:
Only a few floors down, and the view from the trams became spectacular: You could see up through the open cylinder floors, all the way to Floor 20, on the opposite side of the satellite’s outer cylinder; and there was no more impressive sight in a satellite. A small detail that contributes to the overall "flavor" of living on a satellite.

I did not foresee the surprises at the end (no other comments - I don't want to give anything away). I wish Verdant Skies had been longer, and I look forward to a sequel.

Keep writing them - I'll keep reading them! :)

I finished reading it over the weekend. Wow! I have never been shy about saying that I'm a Steve Jordan fan, but this was just a quantum leap (forgive the inevitable pun) from your other stuff! You have hit a stride with this book that I hope we see in your work for a good long time!

At first I was a little leary of trying to follow the multi-character approach, but I was able to visulaize each and every one clearly as soon as they were identified in their sub-plots.

And the science was believeable and understandable. The info-dumps which are the bane of existance for all hard SF writers were handled as well as I have ever seen. The long narratives were contextual and informative without being didactic.

Fortunately, being a humor writer, I don't have to come up with an explanation of techno-gizmos other than, "They're bugger all to get started on a cold morning..." And the open plot devices were not disappointing, but fit in nicely and show that there is a longer story arc that will be continued.

So, thank you thank you, thank you, Steve, and what are you doing reading this, get back to work on the sequel already! :p

Steve, I just had a totally free, do nothing, no neighbors around, lazy day and was able to finish Verdant Skies. I absolutely loved it! Since I live in the USA and have been to Yellowstone it was especially interesting for me.

I now understand what your Speculative tag means on your website..:p
"Extrapolations based on real and theoretical science."

pshrynk expressed most of my thoughts about your book so I will shamelessly quote a little of what I especially agree with...

At first I was a little leary of trying to follow the multi-character approach, but I was able to visulaize each and every one clearly as soon as they were identified in their sub-plots.

The many characters caused me to pay a little more attention to my reading than I normally do with recreational reading.

And the science was believeable and understandable.

I felt that the story and time was totally believable and I could envision the situations happening as they did. (Gotta love politicians and big money players.. they never change.:D)

I have Berserker and Lens and I'm making plans for my next lazy day...:p

Our own GraceKrispy has delivered a 5-star review of Verdant Skies (http://www.rightbrane.com/StevenLyleJordan/novels/verdant_skies.htm), which can be read in its entirety on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Verdant-Skies-ebook/dp/B0046LV0DU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&s=books&qid=1288805729&sr=8-1) and Goodreads (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9503304-verdant-skies), as well as other booksellers.

Steven Lyle Jordan has written a page-turning adventure that, unfortunately, doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. His characters are pretty well-defined, and the science is thought-provoking... It was a difficult book to put down. As I read, I found myself thinking about how easily this truly could be our reality in 2229, or even sooner. I think that connection to what is going on in our world right now is what makes this book so fascinating. It's the kind of science fiction that could truly become our reality down the road.

I think the riveting storyline and the fascinating physics push this story into a 5 star read. Strongly recommended.

Yes, it works now but it appears the book is no longer free.

I don't believe it was ever "free"... it was considered a deal, and DRM-free.

Verdant Skies has scored another positive review (http://papyrus.calebblake.net/2012/02/29/verdant-skies-by-steve-lyle-jordan/)... this one on Papyrus. The reviewer seems to have twigged to the fact that I created a story that is tailor-made for the big screen:

I can probably sum up this novel thusly: potential script for pilot/two part movie introducing a new sci-fi television series part “Babylon 5″ and part “Star Trek”. Really. There are a cast of characters all developed in an introductory way as if we’re going to be joining them for a whole season and a two part action thriller that serves as a precursor for the actual series which would probably be named “Verdant Pioneers”, also the title of the sequel... Throw in a couple of daughters, wives, a couple of combat pilots and sundries and you have every space opera television series ever made. But that’s not to say that all I could murmur was “derivative” as I read. Not at all. To me, this was a refinement in ways on what already works well in this arena and it really was a very enjoyable and exciting read overall.

Wondering what might constitute "every space opera series ever made"? Then check out Verdant Skies (http://www.rightbrane.com/StevenLyleJordan/novels/verdant_skies.htm)... then read the sequel Verdant Pioneers.

Nice review, I enjoyed Verdant Skies quite a bit. Have Pioneers in my TBR pile, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Sounds very intense. I like the concept and how you have tied the possibilities of the future into the hear and now. The title is an eye catcher for sure.

I'm a sucker for Sci-Fi TV series. There's no way I could end Verdant Skies without a smile on my face, even if I might have had some issues along the way.

Verdant Skies (http://www.rightbrane.com/StevenLyleJordan/novels/verdant_skies.htm) has proven popular enough to warrant another sequel, now in development... and has a reservation to be taken to the west coast and pitched in Hollywood this summer! The leaders and residents of the satellite Verdant have captivated the imaginations of those who fear for the environmental future of the planet, and who long to know how that might somehow kick-start Humanity into a future among the stars.

If you have not yet read the novel that was voted 2010 Top Four Reads at dailycheapreads.com and Best of the Best semi-finalist at EditorJennifer.com, now's the time to see what all the buzz is about! And if you already know, please visit the page anyway, and use your favorite social medium to spread the word!

Now, don't make me rush it... you wouldn't like it if it's... rushed...

Congrats on the potential movie deal Steven.

Whoa, don't count yer chickens and all that... it's going to be pitched. That's a long way from a movie deal!

(Let's see; I'll have to negotiate a cameo... maybe I can be the old guy in the Command Center... oh, no, the reporter doing the story on the eruption... :chinscratch:)

That's why I said "potential" in the post. :) I know it's a long way from start to finish yet, but even the potential is a step in the right direction I would think.

Yeah, it's a direction I like, obviously. I think Verdant Skies would make a great movie, and altough I don't know enough about the groups it will be pitched to (it's being handled by another party), I think anyone can see its potential.

It's also a personal validation, which helps my self-confidence a bit.

I can certainly understand that. If someone puts a good amount of time into a project it has to be very satisfying to think that it could result in such a return. Anyway good luck with it Steven.

Just make sure you are one of the extras that dies a horrible gruesome death.

Not a lot of that in the original story. But I'd bet that if it was optioned by SYFY, they'd write in someone having hot lava unexpectedly dumped on them, to die a screaming, burning death. (Or a lava monster to grab someone and pull them in... that is how they roll.)

Aren't they the ones that traditionally wear the red shirts? lol.
