After years of promises about long lasting portable devices with fuel cell technology, maybe it's almost here with this fuel cell powered Toshiba MP3 player (http://www.engadget.com/) that has a luxurious 60hrs reported play time.

Probably not. It will still likely take some time before it's on the market. In fact, haven't we been hearing this from Toshiba for more than a year (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/25/tosh_fuel_cell/)? We also heard recently that Toshiba's fuel cells for laptops is being delayed (http://www.fuelcellsworks.com/Supppage3362.html) until at least 2007.

It does appear to be refillable without expensive gadgets, if you can believe the picture. Just don't spill it on your brand new device! And I realize this is not very important when you are talking about a fuel cell device, but I wonder if the sound quality is any good.

Anyone else out there tired of waiting for all these promising battery and display technologies to show up in our pockets instead of remote secret labs and press releases?

The major problem is still how to create fuel cells small enough to fit neatly in a mobile device and with sufficient power. Another problem, especially for people "on the go" is that air transport regulations currently prohibit the carriage of methanol.

I think we'll seen better display technologies before we see fuel cells hitting the market. And who knows... with the better less battery-eating displays, maybe we won't even need fuel cells for the next time.
