So, we have a new member with a 505 who might be able to get hold of a NYPL card.

They are wondering how the check out process works. Can someone guide her thru it? Here is her question:

How does the NY library work? I have someone in New York that I can access their library card and it looks like you check them out and back in. But I wonder how? Also if the library card is in a different name, will that affect the reader that it goes on? Final question, what format do you get for the Sony 505? Adobe?

Thanks

I think I answered this in another thread, not sure though...

I'm not a resident of NY but was able to get a non-resident NYPL library card by downloading and printing out their application form, filling it out and mailing it to them with a check for $100 and a copy of my driver's license. My card is good for a year.

They sent me a card in the mail. I can then access their web site for downloadable books to get Adobe PDF books. (Unfortunately they don't have ePub available yet--hopefully will someday!) The books will expire 21 days after downloading.

Hope this helps!

Yes you did answer in another thread, but I don't think there can be too much info out there, right?

My local library system, Boston Public Library, has added ePub and when they did, I noticed that I now get a choice of how long I want the book for. I can choose 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days.

If you have PDF or ePub and "return" it, it will be deleted from your computer. But if you also have the book on your 505, you will find that it is still readable if there is still time left.

If you are honest, you can take out Mobipocket eBooks, strip the DRM, convert with Calibre, read and then delete.

Also, there is a limit usually of 10-14 electronic borrows at one time. I am allowed 10 at one time.

Once you have a library card, you can request eBooks. But to see what to request, go to http://search.overdrive.com/default.asp and then find the form at the library and fill it out.

I was really impressed with the Boston Public library digital collection. There's no way to get a similar deal as with the new york public library and just pay a flat yearly fee, is there?

The books will expire 21 days after downloading.

Just a slight addition: If the book is the current one being read (the one that opens when you switch on the Reader) at the expiration time, you can continue reading it indefinitely *as long as it remains the current ebook*.

Please correct me if this is wrong, as I only encountered this behavior once.

Thanks for pointing that out jj2me! I'm pretty sure this is correct as others have posted that it works. I don't have any personal experience though.

I do know that one time I had to reset my reader and in doing so, it reset the date back to 2007 or something. Anyway, my reader was telling me that my books would expire in 532 days or something like that. Don't know if manually resetting your date to an earlier date would work or not though.

I applied for a non-resident library card for NYPL, they cashed my check so I'm expecting the card to arrive soon. I live in Costa Rica but used a U.S. check and my forwarding address (which is in Florida) and sent a copy of my passport.

Question: After you've downloaded a book to your reader (I have Sony 505), do you actually have to read the book within the loan period or is it on your reader and you can read it any time?

You have to read it within your loan period. That the beauty........after the loan period, it automatically 'closes' ........no late fees, no running to the library.......

I had a library ebook out and knew I couldn't finish it in the three days it had left so I changed the year on my reader to 2008. It then had 367 days left on the timer. It works a treat and doesn't seem to affect anything else! The closest thing to library time travel there is!:D

Being able to continue reading the library book after the expiration date hasn't worked for me with the NYPL. The book is gone!

Time travel indeed! Yesterday my Sony 505 locked up (first time this happened) so I used the reset slot on the back of the reader. After doing this I discovered all my library books now show that I have more than 2 years to return them!:2thumbsup

It will be interesting to see what the books I borrow in the future will show.

Be careful you don't lose your books, Crsheilah. If you connect to ADE to put new books on your reader, in my experience ADE automatically updates the date and time on the reader. If your books have expired in "real time," they'll expire on your reader, too.

LOL, you're right! I did connect to ADE later in the day and my reader date corrected itself. Guess you really can't beat the system..BUT

suppose I was going on a trip and wanted to download books from the library.... In that case, since I wouldn't be going online during my trip, I could reset the date and not have to worry about my books expiring.

The date trick definitely has some uses. Also, I've found that if you only connect your reader to Calibre, the date will not automatically change. So just put as many library books on as you want, change the date on your reader, and avoid the Sony Library and ADE and you can read the library books for as long as you want. :)

I know that connecting only to Calibre won't change the date. Alas, I don't know how to get around the DRM so that I can put my library books on Calibre. Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm not sure you can, unless you strip the DRM, in which case I think the books would no longer expire, so you wouldn't need to worry about not opening ADE anyway. Personally, I haven't felt a huge need to put new library books on my reader before I've read the old books, and if I ever did want to do that, I could always just re-check out the expired books, which isn't the end of the world really. :)

I had a book recently that was coming up to the due date that I wasn't finished reading. I did not plug in my reader, and made sure I didn't get out of that book in my reader and I was able to finish past the due date.

Another library tip I learned recently is that if you belong to more than 1 library, it will not let you have books from two different libraries on your reader at the same time.

I've been able to have books from two separate libraries on my reader at the same time, and they've worked fine. But I think both libraries used Overdrive, so maybe that's the difference?

I have had a problem putting both library PDFs and library ePubs on my reader at the same time.

I am a NY resident but live nowhere near NYC... does anyone know how I go about getting a library card? Everything I've seen on their website says I have to go to a branch location to pick up a card, but that is seemingly impossible. Thanks!

The only way to do it is to go to the library to get the library card and then you can access the libraries eBooks. You can do it without having to go to the library that requires paying for it.

I wonder how much that would cost me. I'm sure a trip to NYC would cost me more... hmm...

What part of NY do you live in? Would it cost you more than $100?

Not true if you are a New York State resident. You can apply online and they will mail it to you within a month. My application was processed in two weeks and I have out books and read them on my Netbook (I am waiting for the firmware upgrade for my EZ-Reader so I can read them on it). See below from their website....

How Do I Apply for a Library Card?
Adult and teen users may either apply online or in person at any New York Public Library location or Library-sponsored event.

Applications for children ages 11 and under must be completed in-person at the Library or any Library-sponsored event, and require the signature of a parent or guardian.

Please see the Library Card Terms and Conditions page for complete eligibility requirements and additional information.

Note: Applications submitted online may take up to one month for processing and delivery via U.S. mail. Valid identification must be presented to Library staff for verification before any card may be used to borrow materials or reserve a computer.

That was the part that confused me. I assumed that I would need to present valid ID before I could check out an e-book, but am I wrong?

Thank you for your help!

Also--apparently, NYPL recently quit accepting non-NY resident applications for $100, so when mine comes due next month I won't be able to renew.

megs94, when I did apply for my non-resident card, I was able to send in a copy of my driver's license as verification of my ID. Before I did that, I sent them an e-mail asking how everything worked and got a very helpful reply--so maybe try that--I'm sure they'll let you know what you need to do.

I just had an online chat with a NYPL Librarian. I asked about the out-of-state Library Card procedures. Her response was, "Our policy has changed and we no longer offer out of state residence an annual fee."

This is true. And, in any case, the "new member" quoted in the OP as saying "I have someone in New York that I can access their library card " would be violating the terms of use of the NYPL.Please don't condone this type of activity.

I agree...

If you do like our library so much, you can move and you too can pay higher taxes:smack:
