View Full Version : MobiReader (PC) supports ePUB
gerraldo 05-08-2009, 09:33 AM Edit: In german version this feature is HIDDEN (like explained below), in other language versions it seems to be SHOWN (confirmed: french and english)!?
Maybe some of you know this already, but to me it was totally new that MobiReader (PC) already supports ePUB!
Just klick on IMPORT and select "all supported formats" and though it's not shown individually - like all the other formats - you can see and choose ePUB files. Imports nicely and works like a charm (with cover and all)!!!
(Just one minor bug: If the language is not set in the ePUB file you need to add this to the OPF file inside the ePUB archive (ZIP) or it won't import the file! I used DEU for German and ENG for English.)
As I convert all my eBooks to PRC before using them on the CyBook, this is a BIG plus for me and makes the support for ePUB with the new firmware release simply useless for me...
wallcraft 05-08-2009, 11:33 AM MobiPocket Creator (and mobigen) can also import ePub. Another program that can do this for you is Calibre (has its own forum here).
Calibre handles the conversion of ePub formating to MOBI better than MobiPocket, but there are signs that Calibre is having an effect at MobiPocket and they are trying to catch up at their usual glacial pace.

I posted a bug in the Mobi forum the other day, and they actually responded! Hope springs eternal. I'm also going to be leaning on them at the Digital Book conference next week.

Maybe you can ask them why the ePUB functionality seems to be a "secret"...

Bug's not so minor in my book!

You're right, to be honest - as this doesn't works, if language info is missing - it's a major one. But at least there is a workaround...
BTW: Would be good if it asks you for this info, if it's missing, instead of not working. However, this info doesn't seem so important to me?! File was compiled with calibre and it had UND as language (changed it to DEU and it worked).

Don't understand : in my Mobipocket Reader (PC), v. 6.2, build 608, EPUB documents are proposed both in Import dialogbox, and in the popup list beneath Import button... :D

Which is exactly the same version as mine...
Except that I use the german version (on german Vista Home Premium 32bit). There is no sign of ePUB in my app, not in the dialog or the list, but it shows ePUB files when I choose "alle unterstützten Formate" (all supported formats) and imports them. :chinscratch:
Which language version you're using? Is it in the english version?!
Idoine 05-08-2009, 03:52 PM Both Français and English propose this option... :)

Thank you. I'll mail Mobi about this error/omission (interestingly ePUB is the latest craze in Germany...).

Hmm... that didn't seem to work for the files I tried. Even with either ENG or en-US specified in the opf, they still don't open.

I tried it with several books downloaded from this forum and they have been made with calibre or feedbook. All that have not worked at first (all by calibre - language was set to UND), worked after setting the language to DEU or ENG... :chinscratch:
Maybe you can post one of this ePUBs here or send it to me via eMail?! I already mailed Mobi about the omission of ePUB in the german version and the conversion error with language definitions.
BTW: Did you copy the OPF file back in the right location? Sometimes it's inside a folder in the ZIP called OPS.
I can't confirm this. I just received my cybook last week and epub will not show up (at least from the SD card). Not that I need it, but thought I'd test it out. :)

It's MobiReader PC-version that supports ePUB, not the CyBook itself. In the meantime I found out that this is only with the german PC-version a "hidden" feature... (mailed them, but no answer yet)
So you need to import ePUB books with MobiReader software on your PC and then you can read them on your CyBook.

I create my ePub files manually, building them in Dreamweaver and using WinRAR to zip them, and check them against ADE to make sure they open properly (which they do). Attached is the ePub version of The Onuissance Cells, in which I tried it with "en-US" and "ENG" in the language spec... both would open in ADE, but neither would open in Mobi reader (Version : 6.2 Build 608).
I'll try creating a new file in Calibre and see what happens.
(By the way, the attached file is free, so anyone else, feel free to download it.)

When I ran it through mobigen.exe (a version of which MobiPocket Reader is using internally) I got: Info(prcgen): Unpacking ePub file

Steve Jordan 05-16-2009, 11:24 AM I just tried recreating the doc in Calibre, went back to the metadata file and changed the language from "UND" to "ENG." After that, the Calibre file opened in Mobi Reader. So it does work, obviously depending on how the file is created.
The Calibre ePub file and folder organization is different than the organization I use (which was obtained from an IDPF link). My and the Calibre versions do not fully validate, though the Calibre version has fewer errors (but the Calibre version did not recognize some of the HTML markup, either).

I've found 2 "errors" in the OPF file (don't know if it's Dreamweavers fault or MobiReaders):
- The encoding info was missing: first line should read "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1" ?> (or whatever encoding is...)
- I deleted all lines with "imgl" defining all images with the same ID in the <manifest> part
The newly created ePUB was converted OK by MobiReader and looked perfectly OK in Adobe Digital Editions (the same as your original file)!
As I'm no ePUB specialist I really don't know what's specified by ePUB format, but at least MobiReader won't take it with those 2 "errors". BTW: All feedbook ePUBs are working perfectly with MobiReader...?! :chinscratch:
I'll mail Mobi about this, but as I've already mailed them about 2 other things concernng ePUB and I have no other reaction then "we'll have to ask our specialists"... ah, well we'll see what happens...
Thanks for the book BTW. :)
gerraldo 05-16-2009, 01:17 PM I think each item id has to be unique.
I think they're not really needed (despite producing an error in Mobis conversion tool), as each image is later called in the html-files with it's original path and name... :)
Steve Jordan 05-16-2009, 07:43 PM I think each item id has to be unique.
You are correct, sir!
When I renamed each image ID to "img0," "img1," "img2," etc, the doc displayed properly in Mobi Reader. Adding the encoding to the top of the OPF file was not enough. (In fact, you can leave the encoding off, and the file still opens in Mobi Reader.)
And now we know.
gerraldo 05-16-2009, 10:14 PM I'll mail Mobi about this, but as I've already mailed them about 2 other things concernng ePUB and I have no other reaction then "we'll have to ask our specialists"... ah, well we'll see what happens...
Got mail: The seemed to haven't got my first question about the omission of ePUB in german version, so they were missing part of the information... Asked me about what version and build I was using.
Interestingly they're at the moment working on the ePUB conversion (with MobiGen and Reader) so I wrote them back about all the errors encountered up until now. I'll tell ya when I've got more information...
