Savory is my new on-device epub and pdf converter for the Kindle2. You can read about and download it from: http://bit.ly/Zp1ZM

Good job. Since I use Calibre, I probably won't install it, but this is the sort of thing Amazon should have done to begin with.

does it convert PDFs to bitmap images or does it actually extract text?

It's a calibre port.

I realize that - I never use calibre before - hence I'm asking.

Oh. According to his blog, savory extracts the text but ignores images.

It uses pdf2html. It will get images that are embedded in the text, but not scanned PDFs

Hi, Installed Savory (successfully I think) but then nothing happens :)
How long does the conversion take? Let's say for a small text pdf 50kB and a large, image heavy pdf ~10MB?
I moved a big pdf to documents, "undocked" the kindle but it didn't show, so I though maybe the conversion is slow so I docked again, removed that file and put a 50k pdf in the documents folder, undocked again, but no new books in the home screen :(

What info do you need to troubleshoot?

I'm seeing some weirdnesses with "copy file over USB" -- what happens if you download from the browser?

I can't use the browser, not in the US so don't have 3G modem enabled.
I did find something strange though, none of my system files in the kindle have any filedate... could this cause a problem? How is Savory checking what files are new and to be transcoded?

Hi Jesse,

I don't see any system folder on my kindle 2. Do I have to create it? I recently got my kindle, and can't wait to install savory.

I've got the same question and wondered if one of you would be so kind as to explain how to do this?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Can you please post the real link instead of some redirecting link that hides the original link? I will not click these redirecting links as I have no idea where it's going and sometimes they don't work.

MR supports full links. So there is NO NEED AT ALL to use redirecting tiny links.

Do you really think there's been a malicious link posted to this thread the whole time and no one has said anything?

Bit.ly is great for aggregating traffic information. Add a + to the end of the link if you're paranoid.

I have, with mixed results. Some items I am able to view as they were originally formatted in pdf. Some not.

I've found that Savory takes its time to get started on a new pdf that is added. It seems like it has to go into standby mode first, but I can't swear that is correct. Once conversion starts it will take a few minutes, but from what I've seen Savory does work pretty well.

I've used the 0.06 unsupported version of savory, and it works just fine for me. My Kindle software version is 2.0.2. I have read a couple of comment posts that 2.0.3 breaks savory. I'm personally interested in finding out if it does work in 2.0.3.

Noobie question, but how are youall running apps on the Kindle? Accessing the app from a mounted Kindle thru your USB-connected computer? Or is there a way to access executables that are outside of the default documents directory on the K2 which displays the K2's contents?

thx!

Savory is, as far as I know, the ONLY Kindle app. It has to be installed on your Kindle. Read about it here (http://blog.fsck.com/2009/04/savory.html).
