I loaded the 1913 dictionary and did a search. It worked great. Then I searched for the word perspicacity and it locked up. Even the reset button in the back will not reset it.
It has been stuck for 3 hours now, still saying searching. I am going to wait until the battery dies then hope it will reboot. Anyone else experience this?

I brought up the dictionary, my last search had the word "outbound" at the top of the page.
I searched for the word "perspicacity" and it took 10 seconds to find it.
Did you strart from the 1st page of the dictionary without narrowing in at all?

I tried searching for a word a long way down the dictionary. The only way I found to stop it was press the "option" button. After about 10 seconds, the screen reads "formatting", you're returned to the home page, and for some strange reason the "orientation" button is displayed.

Plug it in to your computer via the USB cable...that should 'boot' it into file transfer mode and override the search.

I tried the option button and nothing happened.
I also tried plugging in to my computer and it is still locked up.
Thanks for the ideas, anyone else?

I called sony support and they were quite helpful. It seems that you have to hold the button in the back for 5 seconds and then turn the unit on and off, twice.
Anyway, it rebooted and now is out of power. So I hooked up to my AC adapter and it works fine. So far, it looks like nothing has changed.

What appears to be "Locked up" is not actually the case. Certain file types
will /can cause the 700 to HOLD the CPU while it scans
the entire document and searches through each page. The problem is, the time
it takes for the CPU to release may give off the impression that the device has
"Locked up" when it actually is still checking. I've tested this theory on a large
volume dictionary and a 2000 page PDF. When I searched for a word, the entire
system devotes 100% of the processor cycles to that task.
The odd thing is, it does not always happen in the same document. Some searches
are fast and others take a while. This leads me to believe that an improvement
can be made in how the system responds while in search state. Perhaps an ABORT/
CANCEL function could be added.
Does anyone have a estimate of the max file size suitable for the 700?
Perhaps a 15MB pdf magazine?

I don't think there is a theoretical 'max size' but the rule of thumb is the
higher you go, the longer the indexing and loading especially when searching.
I have no problem with 30MB PDF files

Slide the power switch and hold until the screen goes off. Then press the reset button. Try and see if that works.

Yeah, it says so in the manual. The PDF that comes on the CD.
