I have this posted over on KindleBoards as well....waiting a response, but getting more and more frustrated.

My Kindle 2 is showing up in Devices with Removable Storage......I cannot, however, see any files. A prior suggestion was to uncheck "hidden files/folders" in Tools, which I did (and which seemed to work a couple of days ago).

Where/how should I be locating my books??

Thanks so much for any help!
Juanita

Can you maybe post a print screen of your explorer or finder (what OS?) so we can see what you are. This doesn't make any sense.

You do have ebooks on the device?

I have books on the device, yes; at least 30, including samples. I'm running Windows XP.
I don't know how to do the print screen?

Press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. Once you have done that open the paint program and do a "Paste". Then save the file as a jpg. Once you do that you can attach the image to a message here.

What did Amazon Kindle Support tell you when you called?

You did call, right?

One thing I notice is that it is showing up as "Kindle 2", mine only shows as Kindle.

I'm on Vista right now but I'll check in XP (which you are running).

My K2 shows as "Kindle" in XP as well. I notice you have a Kindle 2 icon on your desktop, did you create it and rename it from Kindle to Kindle 2?

Are you trying to access your kindle though that icon on your desktop or are you letting XP discover the Kindle when you connect it with the USB cable and open that way?

AnemicOak

Does the Kindle's screen show USB Drive Mode while you're trying to browse it's contents?

jcbeam

I believe I renamed it Kindle 2 from "removable storage device" or usb storage device, can't remember now. There is no icon on my desktop; XP advises it's "found". And the Kindle screen does show USB drive mode on screen, for a moment, then says to use kindle or continue charging, eject.

Weird. Some folks have had USB issues resolved by doing a reset, maybe try that?

It's the top of the Explorer Window that I thought was an icon. Sorry about that. :)

It seems whatever you did in renaming it is causing a problem. Try renaming it "Kindle".

Renaming to Kindle doesn't do anything. It seems too, that the usb connection is not firm, because the USB screen disappears from the screen and I CAN use, turn pages on Kindle. If I reset, I will loose everything, correct? Or at least the books not from Amazon?

I can't wait till they find that is indeed the problem so I can post

No, whatever books or other content you have on the Kindle will still be there when you reset. Please let us know if it works for you.

Exactly.

If Daffy and PilotBob can't help you, you may need to call CS........but chances are Daffy can troubleshoot.

I am happy to report; it's working! I did not do a re-set, simply turned off and back on. I must say though, I believe the USB cord to the Kindle itself is not very "snug"; it rocks a bit if I try to wiggle it. Could that be part of the problem?

Thanks to all of you again for your help and desertgrandma, you are right, this forum doesn't need no stinkin' CS!:thanks:

Good for you...........and even tho you did resolve this problem, I think even Daffy will agree with me when I say that the loose connection IS a problem that should be communicated to CS.

You said sometimes the screen will disappear, and you can use your Kindle.........thats not right.

Click on the "Contact Us" button on the right of the following link. Tell them about that, and then let us know what they say.

And..........welcome to MobileRead.

They might be able to send you a new USB cable if it's the cable that's the problem and not the connection. Is it loose on the Kindle end or the computer end?

oops! Too small

Can you open a command window. Type

e:

Then type

dir

and paste the results or a print screen.

Has it always looked like this, or is this new?

Opps... guess I am too late. That's what I get for watching a movie with the fam.

PErhaps the Kindle was in "charging" mode rather than USB mode. Isn't there a way to do this? I don't have a K2 so I can't really say.

It's loose on the Kindle end; going to try it again today on completely flat surface.

I would definitely contact them and ask for a new cable. Also, there have been reports of people who have had bad micro-usb ports on the Kindle itself, so if the cable isn't the issue support should be willing to send you a new Kindle.
