Hi folks! I'm a new Kindle owner who's somewhat frustrated because most of my downloaded .prc files do not display an author name. Is there a simple way a Mac user can edit title and author metadata for .prc files?
Thanks very much.

Check out the Visual Kindle Guide wiki. There are instruction on how to work with metadata using mobiperl tools on the Mac.

I'd just install Calibre
http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/

It does a lot more than edit metadata, but it does that very simply and efficiently as well with a nice GUI.

So it really edits the meta data and not just create a new meta data file?

Yes and no.

The metadata edits are stored in the database. But, if you do a send-to-device or convert the book the metadata in the copy is modified to match the metadata in the database.

(I don't know if this happens if you do a save-to-disk.)

metadata is written to the file only on save to disk and send to device operations. And it is written to copies of the original file

Calibre is a beautiful system and works very nicely on editing metadata in .PRC and .MOBI file but even though I alter metadata successfully in calibre for .AZW files, after I send to device I'm left with the old metadata on the Kindle. This is on files I've purchased from Amazon. Perhaps on those the metadata are stored elsewhere with DRM information.

calibre does not edit metadata on DRMed files.

Use Tommy's "mobi2mobi" tool. It works beautifully, even on files with DRM.

Why not?

Why not?

Because the edited DRM files stopped working on the devices and I don't have a MOBI DRM reading device to test on, so to be safe, I disabled the code for DRM books

Do you not have access to a Windows PC?

the edited files IIRC worked in MobiReader Desktop but not on the device

Aha.

You can run mobi2mobi to do the same thing and compare the files. And if they are identical let me know that mobi2mobi also will generate files that do not work :)
