I don't like any of the designs posted just yet, but I'm sure that eventually they'll come up with a design that I won't be able to resist.

I really hope that eventually they, or someone else, will solve the custom screensaver issue. That was one of my favorite parts of my K1 skin.

Also, based on what I see, I don't see a lot of benefit to applying the back skin. I don't plan on removing my Kindle from its cover very often...

Are they difficult to attach smoothly? Do they hold up well?

They take a little patience to line up properly, but I wouldn't call it a "difficult" process.

They do hold up quite well.

It does. I had a blueish skin for kindle 1 and it was noticeably different after i "skinned" it! Plus white just makes me think I see dirt all the time.

Thanks for the tortuous decision Dragoro!

I may have to go back to DecalGirl and think about a skin for my Sony laptop which is getting pretty scratched, although I have no idea why! I wonder how well the skin would stay on since the laptop has a "waffle" texture to it. Anyone?

I got my dark rose skin today but I had some issue getting it to fit right. I think the cut is a little off as the width of the skin doesn't quite cover the edges like I had hoped and it seemed a little bit long. So had to do a little cut and paste but still not real happy with it. I left off the button decals as the text on the buttons blends into the background is is very difficult to read. Seems they should have done the text in white maybe. Ah well, my second skin should be coming any day and hopefully i can get that to fit a little better.

Instead of putting the back decal on, choose to cut it down a little and put it on the front of my Amazon cover. It is so pretty, I didn't want to hide it!
I love the skin I got for my computer. Very spring like! Click thumbnail to see better image.

I got the Zen for my K1 and just love it. The red is perfect with my M-edge cover. Then I got an Acer netbook, and it's cobalt blue. I got in touch with DecalGirl and asked if they could make the Zen for it, only in blue instead of red. They could, they did, and I love it! It's great that Decal Girl understands the importance of accessorizing! :2thumbsup

I am really glad to see that people had better luck with the decalgirl skins than I had. FYI, my skin {Radiosity} was completely off in the front, and though I emailed them last week, I have yet to hear back from them:

Greetings,

I hope the recipient of this email is well, and I wish You and Your Loved Ones blessings and as many moments of happiness as your hearts can take, giggling with joy.

Today I received this order; thank you very much for the prompt processing.

With all due respect however, I must ask the following question.

Have you actually *tried* installing this stenciled decal on a Kindle2?

If you do, just like me you'll find out that the front is completely off, and not matching the Kindle 2 at all.

If you try to align with the keyboard holes, the film gets on the screen and the page turning buttons. If you try to align with the screen bezel, it sits on top of the keyboard buttons.
To summarize it, the front is completely unusable.

Any ideas?

Thank you for reading.

Kind Regards,

(me)

I'll comment if there are any updates :rimshot:

Yea, my By any Other name (rose) decal totally sucked! I ended up having to cut and paste in order to get it to fit and then it still looked awful! So I ended up throwing away the front decal and used the back decal on the front of my Amazon book cover. It was too pretty to just toss and really dressed up the cover.
Today I received the second decal I had ordered and was much more successful with this one! It actually fits the Kindle and I really like the look. Guess I should have complained to the company and maybe still will. Afterall, they don't know if they have a bad fitting decal unless someone says something!

I received the first of 2 skins I ordered from DecalGirl, the TieDye design.

I'm not fond of it. In the smaller images seen on the website, the design looks pretty crisp. In person, it looks like the image was blown up quite a bit and is a little blurry like a poor quality color copy.

I've ordered the Lily style as well (see my avatar). I hope it looks better.

Mine fits pretty well. There's a little bit of white showing around the edge, the inner edge surrounding the screen and the button edges, but other than that, it's a good fit. It's only about a millimeter.
The decal is just sticky enough to stay on without being a pain to put on. I lifted it back up three or four times to get it just right and didn't feel like it was going to tear or warp. (Don't pull too hard, though, because I'm sure it would stretch and not return to its shape.)
A co-worker said he found the design a distraction from reading on the screen, but I just find plain off-white or black too bland for my gadgets.

I got the digital camo skin (green/beige). It's all right. I wasn't pleased with most of the designs as they're too busy. Can't we just have a clear skin, or at least front/back that match the original colors of the Kindle? I liked the original colors, but didn't want any more scratches other than the small one I acquired on the back somewhere, and the camo seemed the least distracting (I didn't like the plain black).

Honestly, once I start reading I really don't see the design so I don't find it a distraction. I like the contrast between the darker border and the lighter screen. Seems more like a frame.

I've tried one of these on my iPhone before and wasn't happy, although that was on the backlit screen, which wouldn't be an issue here. For now, the camo skin (1) hides the scratch; and (2) will protect the Kindle to some extent; so even though I'm not entirely happy with the pattern (though it was the best pick for my purposes out of the choices) it will do the job.

However, I wonder if perhaps a bit of "scratch remover" (really, just filler that hides scratches) combined with an IS (once the scratch is made harder to see) might be the way to go. I am not sure, however, if 'removers' are safe or effective on brushed metal even though I know they've been tried with some success on smooth iPod backs.

I contacted Decalgirl about the availability of custom skins, having inquired last month and been told that they should be able to take orders around the end of the month. I got a 3550x2650 PSD file with layers for the art, the mask, and an overlay to show where the cuts would go, with instructions on how to size and position the art, then sent the art layer back to them (the full PSD file being 42Mb zipped and far beyond my ISP's attachment limit). I got back an acknowledgement that they could produce it, with instructions on placing the order, which I immediately did. This is what I will be getting:

Nice choice of art! I have the collection of Hokusai's 36 Views of Mt Fuji (not the original :( ) and love the work. My condo sits right on the old Tokaido Road (although these days there are more traffic lights,) and the old ukiyo-e and shin hanga (the Japanese woodblock prints) would make some wonderful skins too!

Hmm. So then I should be able to make art using the original color of the plastic on the front and a two-tone for the back that has a metallic silver lower part and the grey plastic of the top part -- IF we can do metallic colors. Ideas, ideas. Did the information say anything about whether metallic colors will be available?

(The idea is that the skin would "disappear").

I like it, very abstract. Does everyone use the back piece? I haven't since I keep my K2 in a cover. I wish I could have just ordered the front pieces.

CheriePie
04-16-2009, 02:10 AM
Daffy, I liked it for the very "abstract-ness" of it myself. :) I don't really consider it "busy" though. There were plenty of busy skins there, but I found they were generally the ones with more distinct images and patterns, and to me, the abstract nature of this detracted from the busy-ness.... Or maybe that's just me.

But yeah, I threw on the back simply because I sometimes pull my Kindle out of the case Amazon case I have for it and read it nekkid. So it's nice not having the cold metal back for those times.

TallMomof2
04-16-2009, 10:45 AM
I use the back piece because I only use the case when I'm out of the house and I don't care for the feel of the metal case back.

I got the skin in the mail today, and immediately removed the old skin, cleaned front and back with a Windex-dampened cloth to make sure I didn't have any dust or whatnot on it, and applied the skin:

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/481/skinnedkindle.png

I'm very satisfied with the result; now I need to fiddle with the original image to get a screensaver image that will key into the skin whenever it comes up in rotation.

Given that they redesigned some of the skins to fit differently on K2 (knowing the lack of a screensaver was an issue), I'm not surprised they're not ready to just jump on it. I think if I were them, I'd be hesitant too--after all, they went to a lot of work to format up well over 100 skins in an extremely short period, and to have to do them over to accomodate a screensaver hack that a lot of people are not quite ready to take the plunge on....
I'm OK either way; I purposely bought one that would look great even though it doesn't have a matching screensaver, and I actually wouldn't use theirs in the majority of cases, so it doesn't bother me that it isn't available. But then I think of certain skins, like Quest, and can see where it would be fun to have.

Why would they have to do them over? From working with the template they sent me for my custom skin, all they'd have to do is take the area inside the inner guide on the template, square it off at the midpoint of the arcs at the corners, bring it in a touch, size it to 600x800, greyscale it, apply the Kindle palette with error diffusion, and save the resultant file. With an up-to-date graphics program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, that should be all scriptable so it's a one-button process. Open file, process script, save image.

Looks good! Though I wonder what happened to the button labels. I saw them in the artwork you posted earlier but they're missing from the final picture you posted. Whoops.

After looking at the template with and without the labels, I decided I didn't need them, and for me it looks better without them. The copy of the Hokusai skin template I'm passing out to people who want one like mine has the button labels, though.

Our family has six K2's between us. We are all high volume, bookworms and all ladies for the record. I was first to get a K2 soon after it came out and the other five just received them last weekend. Everybody picked their own skins after I discovered decalgirl and loved them. Will try and post pics of the six of our K2's with skins on back and front.

New to this so forgive me if the pics were too big or too many...

All six decals were from decalgirl...service was fast...each one worked first try and the bags were from etsy site , Janine King and Borsa Bella. Been happy with all things K2 related x6! So far, so good...

Love this site...thank you all for being here.

We share my account as we are all related and tight and share books in any event. It's been the most exciting thing to happen to all of us in ages as readers.

We are all new to this and have much to learn...but I figure between the six of us , one of is bound to get it...(the others are much brighter than me)

Glad you enjoyed seeing the pics...My other hobby is photography and I've been documenting the K2's arrival and subsequent deliveries.

We are going to have our own "reading group" as a result of being able to share...if we can agree on a book!....We need a name for our group...so far we've been using, "K2 6 Pack"....We need suggestions....

Our K2's names are...Cyn's Bin...Library Laine...Sharon's Stash...Colleen's Corner...Jackie's Route and Nicole's Scrolls.....

So...suggestions for replacing the 6 packs name are open and welcome...

Thanking you in advance,
Kitten320 aka Cyn of Cyn's Bin :help:

You ought to send those pics to DecalGirl --- they might get a kick out of them, and even use them on their web page!
