So this is my Kindle. My cat, Frank, after being repeatedly being told "NO" that he couldn't get in my lap. Went to the other side of the chair and jumped straight up on my desk knocking my Kindle & coffee cup onto the floor. The coffee cup being a huge "I need my Fraking Caffeine Mug" came down directly on the kindle screen and promptly broke the screen.

Since I have more money invested in Frank than I do the Kindle, I couldn't get mad at him. He's just very needy and I should have known better than to try and deny him.. <Bad daddy>

Anyway.. I figured I'd call Amazon find out how much it was going to cost to fix it, then wait until after Xmas to scrape up the cash to get the screen replaced.

Low and behold.. The Amazon CSR said it was covered. I asked again and made sure he knew it was my fault and not a defect. He said it was covered and they would issue me a return mailing label and would ship me out another one.

How cool is that..!

And as for Frank, he's out of the dog house. He stayed by my side for 2 days as I wretched my guts out from a new medicine made from lizard spit.. Seriously, Byetta is made from a protein found in Gila Monster saliva..
So all is forgiven.

Hah! I had a Sony Reader before the Kindle came out, and I can vouchsafe for their absolutely horrible customer service. It's the pits.

And thank you for being such a good daddy and not punishing your cat. A little bit of disappointment is okay, but we're glad he didn't suffer --- and even redeemed himself when you were sick. They *are* good at snuggling!

I think cats can sense when their human is not feeling well. I've had the same experience--my cat would stay by my side when I wasn't feeling well.

My cats have always listened to me. Then they ignore me, but they always have listened.

On the serious side, all my cats have learned early on what “No” means and I don’t have any trouble with them ignoring me unless they are chasing bugs or the like.

Oh well, knew it was too good to be true.. Kindle won't ship until late Feb-March. Disappointed but still ok with it.. Hell maybe they'll be shipping the new kindle by then and I'll get one of those.. Can only hope.

There is no reason you should have to wait. Contact amazon customer service and complain.

The usual practice is to bump replacement shipments to the top of the list. That is why Amazon is known for its excellent service.

I wouldn't complain if I were him, might raise too many red flags. Heck, he's getting a new one for free when it wasn't a product defect!

The back orders are creating a dilemma for Amazon - since the cleanest switch over to a Kindle 2 would be to have the Kindle 1 in stock before introducing the Kindle 2. I predict that either the Kindle 1's will ship earlier than expected, or all those Feb-Mar Kindle 1's will turn out to be Kindle 2's.

However, I don't think they will be replacing broken Kindle 1's with Kindle 2's.

No doubt that's the case. Even Apple replaces broken stuff with the same gen replacement... usually a refurb.

Kindle Update.....

So I sent off my Kindle using the return label Amazon sent me. Then on 1-6-09 I get an Amazon Gift Card number from the Refund Department for $287.20. Which is the Kindle price minus a $71 restocking fee..

So I called Amazon and told them I did not request a refund, I sent the unit in to either be fixed or replaced. The CSR was cool. He recalled the refund, and issued a new order for a replacement unit. He then notices the shipping date is in March and tells me he's going to try and get authorization to change my ship date since this is not a new order.
I thank him and hang up..

About 30 minutes later he calls back and says the unit will be shipped out 2 day priority on my Prime account and I should have it in a few. Cool beans!

On 1-7-09 the automated system sends me an email, saying there has been a delay in shipping and they will overnight it as soon as it is in stock on 1-12-09 and refunds me the $3.99 that was billed to my Prime account.

So another delay.. no biggie..

And as for the previous comments as to getting the shipping date bumped up or complaining about it to get it changed.. Not going to happen. I am for sure, going to be nice and courteous to the CSR's, be very understanding, and put up with any delays. This is my fault by proxy (Frank) and if they are nice enough not to charge me for breaking the screen, I can handle that.

Now if this was not the case, I'd be all over them like white on rice, leaving crying CSR's in my wake.... as is my usual method. But since it's not, I shall not. LOL

Seriously though, this is one of my biggest fears re Kindle. I love mine, I carry it everywhere, and it is chock full of books to be read. Heck, every Tuesday I have to move some to the memory card to make room for the new releases.

I'm scared to death that something will happen to it and I won't be able to get a replacement shipped overnight.

I wish they'd release Kindle 2 so I could get that and move my existing one to 'backup' status...
