View Full Version : PRS 700 Not Available in Canada until 11/24
ewiplayer 11-10-2008, 11:56 AM Ugh... After agonizing over what to buy for my first reader, and eventually settling on the PRS 700, I find out that it's due out to Canadian stores on 11/24. For all the other Canucks out there... we gotta wait. Hang in there folks.
Hrm, I'm trying hard to decide if I want a 700, but this means I'll have to wait a while in any event. I'm trying to persuade my husband that he wants my 505, which means I have to buy a new one ...

B&h (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/587201-REG/Sony_PRS_700BC_PRS_700BC_PORTABLE_READING_SYSTEM_B LK_.html) ships worldwide, and they'll start shipping the PRS-700 at the same
time as every other non-sony stores (probably 11/14).

Thanks, but I like the comfort of being able to walk into my local Sony Store and handing the thing back, getting an immediate refund, an immediate exchange... you know.
astra 11-11-2008, 08:17 AM Guys, you are spoiled.

sarah7700 11-11-2008, 08:24 AM Yeah, I was so upset when I saw that they pushed the date from the 17th to the 24th...

Yeah, it's all relative... sorry about your luck, mate. But, remember, it's a hell of a lot easier and economical to get a BeBook or other type of devices from the UK as well. So we're all screwed in our own way :)
asabz 11-11-2008, 04:00 PM Hey, it's going to actually be available in stores here though? So I can go check it out in person? I thought it was only available online.

They don't have them in the stores in Canada on display yet, and I don't know when they will get them in. I live in NS and it was quite a while before the Sony Store near me had 505s in stock.
LuluLemon 11-18-2008, 05:46 PM I put one on hold just so I can compare it with 505? It's coming this Monday I can't wait...Merry Christmas to me...Merry Christmas to me.....Yiipy
sarah7700 11-18-2008, 07:43 PM It is in stock in the Canada Sony Store now
JasonWalton 11-19-2008, 05:00 PM Depends on where you are, I think. The Sony Stores here in Ottawa don't seem to have them in (last week they said they would, but I called around this afternoon and no one has one yet), although the one I pre-ordered from sonystyle.ca showed up today.

Wetdogeared 11-20-2008, 03:17 PM Sorry, double posting. Please remove this or tell me how to.
Wetdogeared 11-20-2008, 03:30 PM Mine is on the Delivery Truck, I'm waiting by the phone, I put a sticky on the intercom to tell the courier my buzzer number. Now I'm just hangin hear to see what's new.
Sony was true to their word. It was received in T.O., processed 1.5 days in shipping then shipped to Vancouver last night.
Hang on a sec, my intercom is buzzing....
Just got a brown box with Sony on it, will have to come visit later:xmas:
Plugged it into charger, now have a 2 hour wait..don't even know what the screen looks like yet.:2thumbsup

See my post here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32225#5).
I have to say, the touch screen *is* very nice. The UI is a lot more intuitive on the 700. The UI does still have room for improvement, but I'm sure it will come with future firmware updates. Just minor stuff, like you tap on "Preferences", then you see a entry marked "Screen", and you think, "Oh, I wonder what preferences I can set for the screen?", so you tap it, and you get a dialog box that says "Press 'Yes' to calibrate the screen. yes/no". Seems like a strange yes/no dialog, especially since it isn't asking a question.
If not for the slight fuzziness to the screen, then I'd say the 700 was the clear winner, because the slightly reduced contrast is not as bad as some people have made it out to be.

Thanks for the well written review Jason...:D I can't wait for the Sony Store here in T.O to call me on Monday and tell me to pick up my PRS 700....
Peg Fong 12-30-2008, 07:27 PM Hi folks,
I actually just got my hands on the PRS 700 from Sony after having my 505 for nearly a year. I'm writing a tech review for the Georgia Straight--a Vancouver urban weekly--about the difference between the two and trying to find the answer of when/if the Amazon Kindle will actually be available in Canada.
Any thoughts from anyone who's had the 700? I have to say, I wouldn't trade in my 505 for the 700. But I'll love to hear from anyone in Vancouver or Canada out there who has the 700.
I'm at gidgadgets@gmail.com
Happy reading folks.
