View Full Version : My 700 has shipped!
amabbi 11-06-2008, 11:25 PM Just got the confirmation from Sony; my PRS-700 has been shipped from San Diego.
Unfortunately, I signed up for regular shipping, and I live in NY, so I won't get it til Wednesday.
But still.... it's in the mail! :2thumbsup
Seabound 11-06-2008, 11:40 PM Excellent news! Congratulations! Don't forget to give us a first-hand report when you've had time to use it.
lisreed 11-07-2008, 01:14 AM Me too :-) I got a shipping notification. Should arrive Tuesday. Sure wasn't expecting that so soon but will be glad to have it, then I can hopefully put fears to rest about using a touch screen and clarity questions.

I played with one at my local Sony Store, and it was pretty phenomenal!
And mine has shipped, too! But nobody's given me an estimated delivery date...
ETA: Ah, I have gone on to read other threads... I must say, I've had my 505 for over a year and use it daily and I noticed *no* difference between the screens. And I had my 505 with me & hauled it out to compare size, etc. The 700 was gorgeous.

Good. If you got a fedex tracking number it probably shows when you will get it delivered. Overall I wasn't worried enough to cancel the preorder. And it looks like more people have said good things about it. And the design looks great.
Dave Berk 11-07-2008, 03:28 AM Please! All of you who already got a 505; Once you get the 700 post your opinions on the difference in contrast, if any, and how noticeable it is.
dhbailey 11-07-2008, 07:32 AM Mine has shipped as well!!!! I live in New Hampshire, though, and it's not supposed to make that extra couple hundred miles from San Diego until Thursday.
Yippeeeee!!!!!!!
I have the PRS500, so I'll post a comparison to that device.
astra 11-07-2008, 07:43 AM Good luck guys! :)
zelda_pinwheel 11-07-2008, 08:27 AM wow ! i'm almost as excited as if it were my own device shipping. ;) can't wait to hear your reviews, especially about the quality of the display !!!
special request, could somebody tell me whether the "show all bookmarks" feature that was possible on the 505 (by pressing the bookmark button longer) is still available on the 700 ? i'm curious about that.
in fact, if anyone finds a user's guide in digital form, i'd be interested in seeing it !
sarah7700 11-07-2008, 08:57 AM aww, I'm so jealous!
debscarlett 11-07-2008, 09:30 AM Mine is still "processing" but a recent email said shipping had been pushed back to 11/18. You are beyond lucky!
shighfield 11-07-2008, 09:42 AM When you get it do me a favour and sit in a pitch black room and tell me if you can read?

Deb, I also got an email in mid-October saying that they wouldn't ship until 11/18. Guess they were just trying to surprise us =)
Will post a review when my unit arrives. I don't have a 505 but I do have a Kindle.
shopintheusa 11-07-2008, 11:41 AM Does this mean sonystle retail stores have them now.

I hope so! And I'm totally not hitting "refresh" on my order status every hour. Nope. Not me.
cassidym 11-07-2008, 01:53 PM Does this mean sonystle retail stores have them now.
SonyStyle stored have had them for a couple of weeks but only for display not for sale.
shopintheusa 11-07-2008, 03:32 PM I got my hands on a unit......
700 vs. 505
505 picture is much crisper and sharp. 700 is fuzzy. A difference you would only notice if you have used the 505 regularly. Something you could get used to......but definetly a major difference. I personally would not pay an extra $100 for this unit....regardless of touch screen and light.
shopintheusa 11-07-2008, 04:35 PM There are major glare issues with the 700. It is due to the texture of the screen. It is a glare similiar to an etch a sketch......plastic screen maybe. I guess the 505 is glass....that is why the 505 is so much clearer with almost no glare.
In the dark the ACL1 cover has a consistent stream of light throught the reading area. The 700 light is not consistent around the reading area. There are 4 "bulb shadows".....similiar to the 2 bulb shadows when using a Lightwedge.
I ebayed one of the units I got if anyone is interested. I guess I should be hyping the 700 unit since it is on ebay........

This is extremely interesting -- there are those who claim the 700 is fuzzy, with the 505 much crisper and sharp. And there are those who have held their 505 right next to the 700 and said that the two units are equally sharp and crisp.
I sure hope it's not a quality control issue!
shopintheusa 11-07-2008, 05:41 PM I have some pictures that I can send you of side by side shots of the 505 and 700. How do i get them on the forum/

if the photos are on your hard drive, to attach them to your post, just click "new reply" (or "go advanced" from the quick reply box), then click on the little paperclick button ("attachments"). click on the first button and navigate to the first photo. repeat for the other photos. then click "upload". just post another message if you get stuck.
shopintheusa 11-07-2008, 05:50 PM Here are some pictures....hopefully.
ru.ereader 11-07-2008, 05:54 PM Whoever got their PRS-700 shipped, when did you ordered ?
johnnyr 11-07-2008, 05:55 PM Here are some pictures....hopefully.
This is exactly how it looked in store....such a dissapointment.
zelda_pinwheel 11-07-2008, 05:59 PM Here are some pictures....hopefully.
thanks for those photos, although they really confirm the disappointing quality of the screen. :(
note : to get a good view, click on the photos three times to display them at their full size.
shopintheusa 11-07-2008, 06:08 PM I look forward to the PRS-705.......................or would it be the 707..................or is it the 707AD.............or maybe PRS-900........or Sony Reader Specs.
fanaa 11-07-2008, 06:33 PM I got an email saying my delivery date has changed to 11/18 too. Sucks. I'm a very impatient person. I used to have a kindle that I used pretty heavily, though their wireless option was not something I used a lot. I gave it away to my brother last month, and have since been reading books on my iPod Touch. It's convenient enough, for now, but I don't enjoy reading on such a small screen size. I'm looking forward to my first Sony Reader. I have a feeling a little bit of screen fuzziness isn't really going to negate the advantages of touch screen capabilities for me.
I wonder if you could have crossword and sudoku type games on it now. That would make it a whole lot more fun for me.
lisreed 11-07-2008, 09:13 PM Whoever got their PRS-700 shipped, when did you ordered ?
Mine has been shipped and I ordered in around 10-13.
While it may not be as clear as might like, it looks perfectly readable. About how it is if you have a lighted cover for the 505. Its still worth it to me because I like ebooks but pressing a button to read has been inflaming my tendons. I expect a touchscreen will be a lot better for me. There are also other features I am looking forward too.
Sonist 11-07-2008, 10:14 PM Heh, I actually have two 700s on order (one from Sony, one from ABT) and neither has shipped.
I've decided to chill and see how it looks in my hands. On paper at least, it looks great and the speed and touch-screen (I am too used to the iPod) are too enticing to pass up. Plus it's nicely designed.
If it looks too dim or is not good enough for extended reading, I'll just send them back.
shopintheusa 11-08-2008, 12:15 AM A few more observations.....
I just fell in love with the 700:thumbsup: The 700 is much crisper at night than the 505 w/ACL1. The ACL1 has a haze or frosting on the glass. The 700 is much sharper at night. I prefer the 505 during the daytime and the 700 at night. The 700 light seemed less stressful than the ACL1 cover.....almost soothing.
The 700 reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where the girlfriend looked different in different lighting. 700 is great at night and avergage during the daytime.
The touch screen works excellent with absolutly no problems with finger prints. The little black flash is still visible when turning a page:smack:

But, do you still feel, that when illuminated with a regular incandescent light, the 700 is still dimmer and fuzzier than the 505?

The 700 was actually incredible for reading at night. The internal light is perfect. During the daytime I did not like the 700 due to the glare in the screen. I can see my reflection in the sceen of the 700 when I read.
ProDigit 11-10-2008, 04:16 PM In other words, the 700 is a great bedtime reader!
However, what makes it different from a much cheaper palmtop or backlit led screen @ night?
Even an Acer Aspire One or similar with resolutions of 1024x600 can handle 4-5hours reading (maybe 6 on lowlight & hi-capacity battery if you're lucky), for a lower price; plus it can do so much more!

Honestly, I am not sure why there is so much love for the backlit LCDs. As part of my job, I have to stare at computer monitors all day. While LCDs were certainly a huge step up from CRTs, I still can't stand to stare at them so often without taking breaks because of the eye strain.
I'll pay extra for the lack of eye strain and battery life over resolution right now. Until someone comes along with some new tech that has similar properties of eInk in terms of eye strain, eInk is what I'll buy. If it wasn't for eInk, I wouldn't be reading eBooks at all, I'd still be collecting reams of dead trees for technical reading (which I hate, and usually technical reading I only do once, and don't have a need to show off the collection).
It also helps that eInk doesn't blast light directly into your eyes, which is the main reason why LCDs/CRTs produce eye strain at short ranges in the first place.
imaredr 11-11-2008, 05:17 PM I just received mine today. It was a complete surprise. I didn't receive an email from Sony and I thought they weren't shipping until the 14th. Anyway, Yeah!!!

congratulations !! be sure to let us know your impressions of it.
Wetdogeared 11-19-2008, 12:30 PM Here are some pictures....hopefully.
I assume the 2nd and 3rd photos were to show glare of PRS700 screen, but who reads at a 45 degree angle. First pic is a better comparison, but cameras can't get a true focus looking through layers of glass/plastic, yet the PRS500 looks as if it has the edge on clarity; yet will clarity win over functionality?
JasonWalton 11-19-2008, 02:20 PM I just got mine today, but the local Sony Store is getting theirs this week too; I plan to swing by the Sony Store tonight and see if I can see their demo 700, before I open this one (I'd rather return it unopened if I opt for the 505 instead).
ProDigit 11-19-2008, 02:40 PM I think shooting a small movie will be better!
Anyone having a digital camera should be able to shoot a (low quality) video.
Just disable the sound and you can fit about 1,5minute of video in a 8MB file, depending on the resolution.
