View Full Version : New Forum for the Jetbook?

I know there is not a lot of traffic for it, at least not yet... and I know that there is going to be a reorg of the ebook reader forums.. but considering the fact that it is gotten a fair bit of reader attention, it might be nice to have a forum for the Jetbook.

Granted, this might be a little self serving since I just ordered one :). But I would be happy to help the lest technical to make the most of their readers.

Do we have enough users or enough interest? I don't think so at present. But if that ever happens, then a forum would be a good idea to have. However, I think a forum devoted to "Other reading devices" is where the Jetbook would fit in at present.

bill_mchale

That might be a good idea too. There are several other devices that don't get much traffic, so a single forum for all of them would probably be better than one for each. Its just at the current time, there really isn't a place for people who have a Jetbook to for questions. Admittedly, I am probably (through trial and error) probably becoming the expert, so this is not so much for me as it would be for others who bought one.

How about the Other Devices (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=164) forum then?

How about the Other Devices (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=164) forum then? That is more or less what we had that forum in mind for: devices that don't have their own specific forum ....

When traffic on a specific device picks up, we tend to make it its own forum, but empty forums with nothing going on in them just make the place look deserted.

True, the only problem though is that the current location for the "Other Devices" would imply that it is only for devices which are not dedicated ebook readers. Certainly that was my interpretation.

Just a thought, but maybe the moderators should set a standard of 100 threads dedicated to a device for its own forum? Otherwise divide it into just the broadest categories of dedicated devices and other :).

True the description does make it sound that way. That forum description should be tweeked a bit to basically be any device used to read ebooks on that doesn't have a dedicated forum. And the "portalble devices" category should be dropped and just move iPhone and Other Devices to the E-Book Devices section.

Hmm. That is an excellent point.

Perhaps the "Legacy Devices" might do better named something like "Other Dedicated Devices" ....

Forum structure is a pretty complex thing to figure out, and there's never a single "best" way to do it. I do know that Alex has some pretty significant changes in mind in this area, though I'm not entirely clear on what they're going to be. However, I do know that he's always interested in feedback on the topic, so I'm sure he'll be glad to see these ideas and comments.

The jetBook really needs a better home on the forum. At present, even though it is a dedicated e-book reader, it is probably under portable devices -> other devices. However, this isn't working. Of the 36 threads with jetbook in the title, only one is in portable devices. At least half would be in a jetBook forum if there was one. Also, a search for jetbook returns 159 threads. Not all of these should be in a jetBook forum, but there do seem to be enough relevant threads. Note that a readius search returns 24 threads and starebook returns 129 threads. Either a jetBook forum or an Other forum under E-Book Devices that includes jetBook, STAReBOOK and Readius subforums would make sense to me. The advantage of an Other forum is that it provides a place holder for new devices, such as the Foxit eSlick. However, the jetBook may have outgrown the Other category.

Agree. What must be done for it? Should we vote or something?

I think it would be nice for jetBook people to have their own area in the forum as well as Bebook and Astak readers.

But I am not familiar with behind-the-scenes of forums so...

Just wanting to show a vote of support. :)

Follks... we (the moderators and Alex) know that you guys have asked about this. We have discussed it and it is part of Alex's re-org plan. He just hasn't decided on the best way to do it, or how he will make the changes.

Also, keep in mind, Alex has a full time job and this is his part time hobby. I am constantly amazed at how much he does get done. I know he has a long list of things he wants to do, most that people here have asked for.

So, while something will happen, it won't be tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

I would love to see a forum dedicated to the Jetbook.I owned an EZ Reader for 5 days and have just returned it to Fry's for a black Jetbook, and I love it!
I have no major problems using it but in trying to find answers to small questions I've bounced all over this forum,a central location would be great.I don't post often but this Jetbook has me revved up.Thanks to everyone at this forum,it's a great place.

Didn't like EZ Reader because:
1-Very few extra options
2-Bookmarks did not work with anything other than PDF
3-Buttons were non-responsive sometimes
4-Page flashing gave me a headache
5-It just felt kind of cheap
I've owned an EBookwise 1150 in the past(it died)bought books from Fictionwise for my Palm TX and I'm sick to death of DRM,the Jetbook works and looks great and sets me free from DRM.The recent format additions are what cinched it since I read mobi/prc most of the time, for books that aren't available without DRM there's still the Public Library:)

Yes, I purchased several books in prc format from Fictionwise too and I hope they will sell more DRMed free books in near future.

The big problem that many people think that ink screen is the best that available on the market and they have no idea about TFT screen. I know several people and read reviews from people who has both - ink screen devices (with flashing) and jetBook with TFT screen and almost all of them like TFT screen more. TFT screen without flashing was one of the main reason why I purchased jetBook.

The big problem that many people think that ink screen is the best that available on the market and they have no idea about TFT screen. There may be more LCD screen options by the end of the year, see for example Why I want a big screen ereader (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=436575&postcount=38). From Robertb's description, this is probably a Pixel Qi (http://www.pixelqi.com/products) screen - similar to that on the OLPC (Why I favor Mary Lou’s OLPC screen tech over E Ink—at least for MY purposes (http://www.teleread.org/2008/01/05/why-i-favor-mary-lous-olpc-screen-tech-over-e-ink-at-least-for-my-purposes/)).

Yes Please, I'd like a jetBook forum.

BTW, I've been using deDRMed Mobi files, and I tried one ePub file and I'm finding the the TOCs don't work. They are there, usually at the end of the book, but there are no links.

Is this a known issue, and is it being worked? Or am I going to have to live with it?

It's not a deal killer as the text search works, but ...

Is that why the World Fact Book has a gazillion files, one for each country? Because the jetBook doesn't support links?

My version of the WFB had all those different files becuase that's how the website was set up, and merging 500+ files wasn't worth it. That's the only reason.

BTW, which version of the World Fact Book do you have?

I'm not sure, it's the one that came preloaded on the jetBook, but it doesn't have a title page. The KJV of the bible also came preloaded, and the TOC for that has books titled BOOK ** so they can be found with a text search, but there are no hyperlinks in the TOC.

As I see it, lack of hyperlink support is a MAJOR deficincy. Nealy as large as lack of DRM support.

Fortunaly there are work arounds for both problems.

My Mobi version will work for you. I guarantee any problems you find in it will be due the the jetbook, not the ebook.

On a related note, can you upload a copy of that Epub version of the WFB? I'd like to see it.

The preloaded WFB on the jetBook consists of 260 FB2 files.

You could zip the files in one folder. I'm still somewhat curious, but never mind. That one statement is enough to convey the lack of quality.

It would be nice to have one place to look for jetBook instead of spread around a half a dozen different forums.

Lets see; start out in the news forum, then switch to Calibre, then other devices, and the lounge, and now feedback!

Then by the time I get done doing all that, half of the forums have the new posts flag set again. OWWWWW it hurts the brain!:help:

We can use this topic as jetBook forum till we get jetBook forum ;)

My take on this,

there is no Readius in the market yet and considering the financial issues, it may not be out for a long time.

So it is unfair for Readius to get a forum while Jetbook, which has been well and truly available for a long time to haggle for a position.

The Readius forum is stale and has been languishing for over 3 yrs now on mirage promises.
Sorry Readius..deliver or off with your head.

The Readius forum should be taken out, regardless of whether Jetbook gets one or not.
