Edit: What worries me a bit: Between every page flip (in a pdf) it appears "Please Wait" - it seems slow to me.
Tribble (as the for now only lucky owner): Is this really so slow? Thanks.
NatCh 09-24-2008, 01:02 PM Is it just me, or does it seem to be processing a lot for page turns. I sure hope that's not typical .... :zoiks:
ayhanb 09-24-2008, 01:13 PM end of the scene what happend its broke:rofl:
Boreras 09-24-2008, 01:17 PM hmm, rendering of pages was a bit slow. And the screen broke! That really boosts my confidence regarding improved screen protection :smack:

HarryT 09-24-2008, 01:34 PM That link doesn't work for me - IE7 says "Error on page - object expected".
NatCh 09-24-2008, 01:50 PM Try it in FireFox? (ducks for cover)
cIIIz 09-24-2008, 02:07 PM to all the people who have the iLiad, is the wacom more responsive in DR than the iLiad as shown in the video ?
cIIIz 09-24-2008, 02:09 PM sorry double post

Damm, I was sooo happy when I saw the marketing guys confidence to allow the interviewer to throw it onto the floor... You can see in the video, that it broke when it landed.
My 6inch eInk broke from just carrying it around in my bag in the Cybook cover all day. So I guess I will need a Peli case for that to stay alive in my bag for more then a month.
Boris 09-24-2008, 05:51 PM The "please wait" only appears a couple of times on the second PDF, is it possible the device is opening the first page quickly then caching the rest of the document in the background? I.E. if you left it on the first page longer would the page turn then skip the "Please wait" stage
Just a thought, if so it would make opening a large PDF more enjoyable as you could start reading more or less instantly as opposed to the Iliad where you'd be waiting ages for the first page.
Pity about the screen breaking. I'm looking forward to the Plastic logic's handling of the same test. If it survives it's my next reader

Could be. I think that's how Adobe reader on windows works.

Using the google cache! (puts on flame retardant underwear)

That's basically how the iLiad works. It pre-renders the next page (and caches it in memory) while you're reading the current page. Some pages are a lot more complicated than others (especially with graphics), so occasionally you notice a slow down on certain page turns. I wouldn't be surprised if the DR does something similar.
nekokami 09-24-2008, 06:10 PM Something is buggy about the page caching on the iLiad, though, because sometimes it slows down for very ordinary pages....
All those flashing lights - why? I don't want a light to flash whenever I turn a page -so irritating!
And the big page-turn buttons on the side - too easy to squeeze accidentally. When the interviewer hands the device to the marketing manager, he triggers off page turns.
And when he applies the drop-test - what a pathetic tinny sound! I want to hear a good solid thump when I throw my Reader to the floor.
NatCh 09-24-2008, 06:50 PM All those flashing lights - why? I don't want a light to flash whenever I turn a page -so irritating! To let you know that you've pressed the button successfully, I think. Something somewhere mentioned a visual cue that the button presses had taken.
And the big page-turn buttons on the side - too easy to squeeze accidentally. When the interviewer hands the device to the marketing manager, he triggers off page turns.I'm actually liking the buttons, so far. They're big enough to be easy to hit, but they aren't the entire length of each side like the Kindle ones, so there's space to hold onto the thing that isn't button.
Gogolo 09-24-2008, 06:55 PM Good observations, fellows!
- The drop test ended in screen crash (the Interviewer had to laugh). Drop test was a bad idea! Screen stability IS still a issue
- The touch buttons are predestinated for random clicking (something that already with iLiad was disturbing).
- page turn seems slow, although pdf opening was very fast.

timezone 09-24-2008, 09:33 PM Has iRex lost their marbles? What were they thinking with the "Please wait" crap? Anytime you send a message to the screen processing slows down. On a normal PC screen I can programmatically read a file displaying each row on the screen and it will take five times the amount of time to process than not displaying on the screen. Now you take a screen that is slower than a PC to refresh and even a short message increases time.
Lets say for arguments sake turning a page took a number of minutes. Then I might appreciate the message. It is telling me the processor is working, not hung up and please be patient. When the delay is of little significance why, please why add a forced delay by sending a message to the screen. This is just plain stupid. Very stupid! :smack:

I missed the flashing lights, ugh! Maybe they have a user defined setting to turn it off. Just hope it doesn't turn on Lara's Theme every time there is a page turn.
Big page turn buttons - Either they are jealous of the Kindle, they want to be an OEM for Amazon or they want people to complain about the design to create buzz which may circle us back to being jealous of the Kindle.

Its only showing up, when there is a delay. In normal usage i have not seen pageflips to cause this message to show up.

Yes, there is.
Gogolo 09-25-2008, 05:40 AM Tribble, will you be able to make a little video review today? Would be great!
How is the handling of the device (especially the touch buttons)?
Is the multiple documents function working fast? (taking notes, switching to other documents)
How is battery life?
Thanks very much for some impressions! :2thumbsup

yup. even on white pages i have seen it happen (although it almost never happens with PDFs containing text, only on unOCR'd scans)

If it looks like mostly text, but still painfully slow, then It's very likely an issue that I mentioned in this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23081).

Maybe only if it hasn't finished rendering/caching the page yet? Most of the time the next page should be cached before you flip to it.
mvoosten 09-29-2008, 05:59 PM Check out the last 5-10 seconds of this movie at the end of the review (with the ceo of Irex)... sure you can drop it.. ooops broken screen...
