View Full Version : PRS-505 Locales: French, Spanish, German?

porkupan

Would anyone be interested in helping translate some menu strings from English to French, Spanish or German? Perhaps other languages too?

Having added Russian locale to the Reader's menus, I don't see why we shouldn't be able to localize it with other languages. Right now we have a firmware that's switchable between two locales (Russian and English) - I would like to add one more language, maybe more.

Here is the list of strings that need translating. Sorry, some of them are repeated (because of the same strings encountered in titles and menu items).

Thanks!

My german translation follows.
2 remarks:
1. Is it possible to translate "Page N" too? In German, this would be "Seite N".
2. In Germany, we write dates a little different. While Sony Reader uses "MM/DD/YYYY", we like to use "DD.MM.YYYY". When this change is possible, it would be a great improvement!

Yes, that's what I do in my Russian Locale, so I will do it in French, Spanish and German.
Thanks, guys!

Well, I didn't have time to add Spanish and German locales yet, so in this version I just have English, Russian (requires Russian-enabled Unicode fonts) and French. I will add German and Spanish in the next few days.

This is in Universal Flasher 2.0 (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26831) format, and the locales are only enabled for Sony firmware version 1.1.00.18040.

To switch to French locale go to "Settings->About" menu and press 1. The locale is going to toggle between English, French, etc., so if you decide that you didn't like French, you can switch back to English. If you switch to Russian and you don't have Cyrillic fonts, you will have to navigate the menus from the memory - you will get a bunch of empty squares instead of letters. :)

When you have switched to French locale, go back to the menus, and they should be in French.

This update also enables the clock (switch on/off in Settings->About by pressing 0), joypad paging forward in books, shutdown by holding Enter.

Very well done, Dominik, flawless translations into German. Far better than the translations I usually have to review in the scope of my job.
Just two tiny suggestions: Replace "Über" with "Info" and "Diashow" with "Diaschau". Agreed ?

Thank you.

"Über" -> "Info": "Info" sounds better. Another thought: Match this with the normal Computer-menu-items. Something like "Über Sony Reader"?

"Diashow" -> "Diaschau": Not sure. "Diaschau" sounds like traditional German, but the "Duden" don't have an entry "Diaschau" but it has an entry "Diashow". I also think that "Diashow" is the word used in spoken German.

As promised, attached here is the 5-language localization package (via U.F. v 2.0) for Sony firmware version 1.1.00.18040. The menu language switches between English, French, Spanish, German and Russian.

If someone prefers a ready-made image with built in Cyrillic-enabled Unicode fonts (the default Sony fonts only supported Western European characters), you can download it here (http://projects.mobileread.com/reader/users/porkupan/cramfs.Fsk.PRS505.1.1.00.18040.icons.clock.joyst.l oc.zip).

To switch between locales go to Settings->About (or whatever it is in your language) and press 1.

Any questions/problems - post here.

Known issue: some messages are not translated - either because I was lazy, and I thought in case of emergency they could easily be understood without translation, or because I haven't yet figured out how to get to them.

Well, it's not hard, but it's a bit tedious. Look at the modified main.xml and mainStorage.xml, search for all occurrences of Fr_FR, and you will see how it's done. You may need to know a little bit of Java Script, but I have never programmed in it, and I figured it out, so it's rather easy.

No binary files need be modded. :thumbsup:

You can easily add other languages. I wonder if anyone could figure out how to make a special submenu in Advanced Settings for Locale - that would be better than the About page switching.

If you translate everything, I'll try to find time to add polish locale. I believe you will need the Cyrillic-enabled fonts for that as the default fonts don't support Latin-based East-European symbols either.

Hello Porkupan,

How come don't we need to reinstall the FW update?

How come don't we need to reinstall the FW update?
You should only need to install the Sony FW update if you are not yet on 1.1.00.18040. Or if the Universal Flasher can't update/flash your firmware for some reason.

U.F. only updates (replaces) the files you provide with it. All the other files already in the system stay there. That's why if you loaded your own customized png file or something, your file will not be replaced by the U.F. unless you provide a new version of that file.

Well, here is the update that in addition to the above mentioned languages includes Polish. This U.F. update can be applied to PRS-505 firmware version 1.1.00.18040, or PRS-500 firmware version 1.0.03.07170.

The one problem I had was that I am pretty sure in Polish, like in Russian, the counted nouns may have different forms depending on the number:

1 книга
2 книги
5 книг
12 книг
21 книга
22 книги
25 книг

But I don't know Polish, so I couldn't make adjustments for that, like I could do for Russian. If you know a little bit of JavaScript, you are welcome to fix the main.xml and post the fix, if you wish.

I believe you will need Cyrillic-enabled fonts to display Polish specific (and other East European) characters, which are not present in the default Reader fonts. So, it may be better to load the full image (http://projects.mobileread.com/reader/users/porkupan/cramfs.Fsk.PRS505.1.1.00.18040.icons.clock.joyst.l oc.zip) (using the image update package from my thread in the Russian eBook forum (http://www.the-ebook.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7155) or U.F. - the attached version is fixed to enable proper loading of ready-made images: option 4, then 6). If you already have the Russian fonts on your Reader, all you need to do is apply the U.F. update attached here.

If you have PRS-505, make sure you upgrade to 1.1.00.18040 (with Sony updater) before you try to apply my image.

Aug. 13 UPDATE: The attachment now has the proper Polish counted nouns. Thanks, moriakaice!

When refering to Russian as example, you mean the 1400-1550 lines from main.xml, yes? And 2330-2400 for current Polish version? Well, I think I can try to do it.

EDIT: After fast manual try at thinking what ranges we'll have to cover, I'm pretty positive we'll have three versions: first for 1, second for 2 to 4 and third for 5 till the end ;) I'll try to get the whole JS code for you.

Since the intends above have been altered, there are two files included below:
+ polish.js.txt is the Javascript excerpt shown above
+ main.xml should be the proper version with changes included (I hope I've pasted it correctly)

EDIT: Sorry, there's an error. I'll upload the proper version as soon as possible.
EDIT: Ok, proper version released ;) Thanks fly to t3d for correcting me (what a shame I did such a mistake).

Thanks, Mori! :thumbsup:

I updated the attached U.F. archive with the correct JS code (for both the 505 and 500), and also the full image (http://projects.mobileread.com/reader/users/porkupan/cramfs.Fsk.PRS505.1.1.00.18040.icons.clock.joyst.l oc.zip) (the link now points to the proper version).

As you can see, it is rather easy to add a language support. For some languages easier, than for the others. I don't know how much more code can you add to the scripts without affecting the performance. So far I haven't noticed any degradation.

I'm not sure how's the files stored, but maybe you could just support separated translation files - that way if one would like to have it's reader with Polish menu would only use polish.xml, and one who wants Russian - russian.xml. That way you should avoid decreasing performance by having too big xml files.

Have I substituted Ru_RU for Cat_CAT (Catalonian language) you could revise the file to know if it is correct?

Our date system is: DD-MM-YYYY (or YY), Timesystem is standard 24hr but others here use AM/PM, either will do. Currency is the Euro and our flag is red-white-blue :P And lots of windmills ;)

I've had a bit of trouble translating Utility/Utilities, I translated it to the equivalent of Tool/Tools instead, we don't really have a word for Utility. Also instead of Device, i've used Reader, which sounds a bit nicer over here.

Here they are: added Dutch and Czech. The attached U.F. archive has localization for quite a few languages. :)

The update doesn't include fonts, which may be required for Czech. :-) If you need Cyrillic+East European fonts (http://projects.mobileread.com/reader/users/porkupan/UkrBel_fonts.zip), you can either load a complete ready-made image (http://projects.mobileread.com/reader/users/porkupan/cramfs.Fsk.PRS505.1.1.00.18040.icons.clock.joyst.l oc.sort.zip), or just apply the attached update over the image with the proper fonts. Don't forget that the eBookLib and the Reader must have the same fonts.

No special fonts should be required for Dutch.

The update is for PRS-505 firmware version 1.1.00.18040!

To load the U.F. update:

unarchive to a flash card
stick the card into Reader
wait for menu
press 5
wait for menu
press 6
wait for menu
take the card out
wait for reboot.

Many thanks for all who have done so much work on the hacking and localisation. I am very happy with my Czech menus, clock, eastern European fonts and page turn option with the bottom right wheel.

Having Russian fonts has encouraged me to give Pushkin a try again inthe original. However, I was curious to see with the localisation that the menu can be Russian or USA-Russian. What is the difference?

Thanks for this Porkupan, I'm in the process of adding the new localizations to PRSCustomizer (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27177). As I cycle through the localizations, the one just before English: Ykpa[]Hcbka --? I'm getting a square block instead of a character scattered throughout...this is with the Cyrillic fonts. What's up with that? Bad fontset?

I usually don't use Cyrillic fonts with full Ukrainian and Belorussian character sets. I actually referenced those fonts (a zip archive) in the previous message, so you can use them if you wish - and you will see a Unkrainian letter ї. I will probably start using those fonts in my firmwares eventually anyway.

The important thing is to remember to update the fonts in eBookLib whenever new fonts are used in the Reader.

I added the Croatian locale. Not sure I made the changes correctly for all word forms, though. You may want to double check, Valloric. In many Slavic languages (in Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, and probably in Serbian/Croatian as well) the word forms change depending on the number preceding it.

I am not sure if it's so complicated in Croatian, but I think there may be something like that. So the best way to make sure I make you a correct menu is to give me the

N books: 1 knjiga/2-4 knjige/5+ knjiga

or something like that. This way I can easily code it up for you. So far for Ukrainian, Czech and Croatian I had to make some guesses with Google Translate, but it was a real pain.

Well, the difference is in Date format (Russian DD.MM.YYYY, Russian-US MM/DD/YYYY) and in Russian letter sort, which I implemented as an extra feature. It didn't work properly in that release, it should work well in the latest release (just above). I am not sure you would want it though, as it removes the Latin-based alphabeth sorting (replaces it with Cyrillic sorting).

So far I was able to just keep adding the languages, so the most recent file usually has all the features of the previous files.

Actually yes, and I was worried about that because there was only "1" and "N". In Croatian, the first four numbers have specific word forms. So: 1, 2, 3, 4 and any number that ends in those four digits will have the same word form as if they were 1, 2, 3, 4. Numbers that end in any other digit will have the neutral form, that is the form of the number 1. Usually, numbers 2, 3, 4 share the same specific form. Also, sometimes the 5+ numbers have their own form, for instance the word "objekt".

Again, this worried me, but I didn't want to step on your toes by being all pedantic seeing how your spending all this time on incorporating these translations. I'm glad that I was wrong and that you care about being completely accurate. I don't remember the last time a Croatian software translation had accurate word forms for numbers.

Here are the more specific translations:

"1 stranica"
"2-4 stranice"
"5-N stranica"
"1 objekt"
"2-4 objekta"
"5-N objekata"
"1 pjesma"
"2-4 pjesme"

Here is the new U.F. package, to which I added the Lithuanian locale (actually, I incorporated stasys's changes with a minor fix for "Books by Title").

I also fixed the "Low Battery!" warning, which had not been working 100% correctly in all locales (a fix to applicationStart.xml).

I have posted my translation in PRSCustomizer thread.

I have added Lithuanian language to mtemplate2 (v0.05a). I hope to see it in the next official release. :)

Including date/time format, grammatical number (plural forms) and some number-word placement.

Stasys, could you revise my version. It is a little different from your suggested translation.

Update 2008.09.24:
Modified fonts put in download section - on some computers BD was loading book with right Lithuanian characters
***************
First message:

Porkupan has added two fixes to xml modified by me. Discussion on Lithuanian localization now goes here http://www.the-ebook.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=175560#175560
You can use use Google translation to follow up.

In mean time I have noticed that some Polish letters in font table are at same place where Lithuanin ones. Solution is to use in fontset original Sony font and modified one. Since I prefer fonts without serifs (like Arial) - here is the full package containing flasher, fontset and settings for BookDesigner.

Put unpacked flasher (thanks again, porkupan!) to SD card root, fileset put to ..\Sony\Reader\Data\fonts, settings put to ..\Book Designer 4.0\Tools\Reader\Settings. Flash image. When making books in BookDesigners, load ether EN_LT_RU_01.rst or EN_PL_CZ_RU_01.rst . For Lithuanian books use Czech book language settings in BookDesigner. For books in other languages use "auto" or corresponding language name.

I feel rather selfish asking for more after so much work, but having already over 10 languages to localize, is there an easy way we could pick just the localizations we want? If not, forget it.

And thanks again for your efforts.

I've been mulling this over too.

I know how I'd do it in PRSCustomizer (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27177). I'd set up each phrase as a replaceable string: IOW "Settings" would be "$settings." If the localization requested was Bulgarian, I'd simply replace $settings with whatever word = Settings in Bulgarian. The translations would be stored in external text files, so adding localizations should be easy. This would require a main.xml with only one localization as a base.

Those thumbs belong to Porkupan, not me :)

This should go without saying, but anyway, I'd feel most comfortable working with a single-localization main.xml that Porkupan has vetted or created. Localization is his baby, all I've done is merge his work into PRSCustomizer. (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27177)

I'd like to suggest having two at one time. English and whatever else the user selects. That way, you can have the reader as it originally was and as you want it.

English is the default and built-in. Localization adds extra languages.

(1) Added Bulgarian and (2) made some rather important fixes for the Russian letter book sorting. I also (3) incorporated Damas's Lithuanian translation, which seemed a bit more thorough than the one from stasys.

As far as paring down the locales. It is really very simple as the locales are limited to:
main.xml
(1) The switch statement that switches between locales when pushing the number 1 in the About screen. This can be easily cut to only do English and one locale - this way there will be no annoying switching through many languages. If this code is pared down, the rest of the locale-specific code is harmless and can stay as is. In fact, in PRSCustomizer you could make checkbox-type selection of included locales, and enable the ones selected, while the rest of them just cannot be activated (although the locale-specific code is still present in the firmware).
(2) The if/else sequence, where I set some variables to be used as messages
(3) The 2 long JS functions per locale parsing Titles and Menu items.
(4) The getTitle, where we call getTitleXx
(5) The getValue, where we call getValueXx

in starageMain.xml there is one if/else sequence.

The JS code is rather primitive, should be very easy to understand.

I don't know for sure, but I think you should be able to read books in Romanian (in Unicode) if you install Cyrillic-Eastern European fonts. You can do it with the help of PRSCustomizer.

Hebrew, I believe, would be hard to implement, because to the best of my knowledge the Sony firmware does not support rendering fonts from right to left. I may be wrong about it, but a while ago we tried making LRF files in Hebrew and the characters were consistently rendered from left to right, which is incorrect.

The Reader supports Hebrew PDFs, so the language is not completely unusable in the device, but the native format (LRF) and the menu system (tinyhttp) probably cannot be easily fixed to support Hebrew.

Hi, I've just finished modifing main.xml and mainStorage.xml for THAI locale by replacing France. I found one tiny error on main.xml with all language, see this sample code.
------------------------------------------------------------------
default:
if(result.length> 13 && (result.lastIndexOf ("books - Page") > 0))
{
text = result.replace(/books - Page/g,"Bücher - Seite");
}
else if(result.length> 12 && result.lastIndexOf("book - Page")>0)
{
text = result.replace(/books - Page/g,"Buch - Seite");
}
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The second result.replace() must use with "/book - page/g" with no "s"

The result is it will not change the locale for the amount of book is not plural (<2).

The new language translations - thanks for adding those! I am a bit busy at the moment, no time to add them into the firmware yet. I will try to find time soon. If someone wants to try and put the localization(s) into the firmware, I will be happy to check and verify the final product. :)

Flash the Reader with PRSCustomizer (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27177) using the localization options but first overwrite your firmware with the US version before using PRSC . Then you will be able to switch to English or one of the other languages provided.

Flash the Reader with PRSCustomizer (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27177) using the localization options. Then you will be able to switch to English or one of the other languages provided.

That will brick his Reader due to firmware changes in 1.3

This new French (1.3) firmware introduces "official" localization that depends on external language files: for the French firmware (1.3) kbookLanguageAssets_en-US.xml or
kbookLanguageAssets_fr-FR.xml. To select English the main.xml must be modified. I haven't discovered a keystroke to make the switch.

In main.xml change
<kbookLanguages id="LANG" default="fr" width="0" height="0" visible="false"> to
<kbookLanguages id="LANG" default="en" width="0" height="0" visible="false">

I've attached a main.xml file that you can use to swap languages on your 505. Download a copy of PRSCustomizer (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27177) and copy the contents of its folder sdcard to the root of an sd card. Be sure to copy the folder's contents, not the folder itself!

Copy the attached main.xml file into the sdcard folder: files.505.1.3.00.22070/opt/sony/ebook/application/resources/scripts

Put the card in your Reader and let Igorsk's Universal Flasher start. From it's menu, choose options #5, then #6. When your Reader reboots, it should be in English. It works here, but try this at your own risk.

If you want to switch to the US firmware you can use the US/Canadian Sony Updater (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PRS505).

If you are unable to run the Sony Updater because it complains that your Reader firmware is current you have two options.

1. Run Igorsk's Universal Flasher and choose option #7. This will put your Reader into firmware update mode. Then re-run the Sony Updater.

2. Uncompress the Sony Updater (it's really a big zip file) and change the file prs505/eBookUpdater/assets/updaterAssets/PRSVersion.dat so that 110018040 reads 130022071 - once that's done, the Sony Updater work at any time.

Whoops.

But isn't it possible to overwrite the French 1.3 firmware with the US 1.1, and then flash with PRSC? This should work.

My apologies for the mix up, should have been more specific.

US 1.1 - UK 1.2 - FR 1.3

Yes, for that he'll need to use the Sony Updater or obtain a new_opt.img file with the desired firmware. With the img file you can use Igorsk's UF to change out firmwares easily.

I figured that :)

Just a note regarding the French (1.3) firmware. It's very different from the US/UK variant. I've been unable to get clock working in it. At this point I can flash to it and change the language to English -- and that's about it. Other changes have just produced bricks so far.

Does it look like Sony just made some changes that are inadvertently conflicting with the PRSC hacks, or does it look like they went out of their way to break it? I know, I know... they have no rational reason to do it, in fact, they would probably be hurting themselves. But it's possible, they've done it before for other devices...

It looks inadvertent to me. They've advanced the firmware with "official" localization so if they want to roll out a German 505 (or 700? anyone looked at its firmware yet?) they just drop in an external xml file and voila! One minor change to the main.xml and they're in business. I bet some variant of 1.3 is in all our futures...If they offer another 505 firmware upgrade that is.

Hi, I followed Your instructions to switch from French to English on my brand new french PRS-505... but... when I connect it via USB to the PC it still speak French: at the bottom of the display it says "USB connectč" and then "Ne pas Dčconnecter"...

Do You know how I can fix it??

Yes I know it is a stupid invisible detail but... I like little stupid details to be perfect ;-)

Hi all, I tried to install this file following the "read me.txt" instructions (or I least that's what I think :rolleyes:), but when the "Run script" screean appears and I press 5 (make a new image) I get the following error message:
"Sorry, this firmware version is not supported: 505.1.1.00.18040" :blink:

If I'm not wrong, that's the right version. It is a brand new PRS-505 (it's going to Spain as a Christmas present to my mum, so I really NEED the spanish translation), it has the last version (1.1.00.18040), and I even tried to "update" it, but when I do so it says that it has the same version and is up to date (doh! :dunce:)

Anybody has had a similar problem?
Am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks,

:thanks:

I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel!

I should have read more carefully :blush:, I'm gonna try the PRSCustomizer and see what happens.

BTW, since I see they are starting to sell the reader in France with their own firmware 1.3, what about Spain? Is there a spanish original firmware?

Thanks again,:iloveyou::rofl:

Jeff,
I look in main.xml for FW 1.3 and see this

<kbookLanguage lang="fr" width="0" height="0" visible="false">
<assets>
<import href="kbookLanguageAssets_fr-FR.xml"/>
</assets>
</kbookLanguage>

I see your change only the first line from "fr" to "us"
Should we change "kbookLanguageAssets_fr-FR.xml" to ="kbookLanguageAssets_us-US.xml" ?

Sorry, Keng we're in Porkupan's thread for firmware 1.1 localization. I don't want to thread-hijack. This is better suited to the Universal Flasher thread for now.

Hi,

I also made the translation to Portuguese (Isn't it the lazy that works twice? :smack: Note to self: search the Forum FIRST, stupid!), and updated the files in the JeffElkins' program PRSCustomizer.

I added a Portuguese section right after the Spanish one because it was from there that I copied the XML code. I tested in my PRS and so far so good (no brick!).:D

I uploaded (AFAIK, virus-free) only the files I modified, named after the folders where they were (the files in PRSFILES.RAR go in the Prsfiles folder and so on). The language (Portuguęs (BR)) doesn't show in the PRSCustomizer Language drop menu, but I chose the option All, and in the About screen was able to select it.

Hope you enjoy.

Thanks Porcupan ! I used the customizer prior this and did not get any result with localisation. Actually I did not try looking in "about + #1).. may be it did work..???
changing the logo did work!
I just used your software and I finally have the localisation done. exepted that in Russian the fonts are just squares.
how can I add cyrillic font to this and keeping all languages?
You mention a link for an image with built in Cyrillic inicode (does not work) but if I flash the previous image with this one, will I loose my other languages too>????

thanks for the update, Voidindigo.. Sorry I am not an expert, I did install Porcupan files, where do I copy your files to add Portuguese? (us_local_all, Us_local_one, lang.txt and loctype.txt. do they replace other files?

Thanks again

Hi, PJ45

Yes, the files in the zips replace the ones with the same names. I named the zips after the folders where they are supposed to be. To be on the safe side, you can first rename the existing ones (I add an .old sufix, because I'm very creative) and then unzip the new ones.

Flash the 505 and, with any luck, you'll have the Portuguęs language.
