View Full Version : PRSCustomizer: Customize and personalize your PRS505 Reader
JeffElkins 09-13-2008, 05:44 PM Nothing missing that I have noticed.
My reason for reflashing is detailed in a posting on the changing fonts thread.
After changing fonts I was having problems with the usb connection.
Calibre worked, but the ebook library didn't and the reader hung after disconnecting the usb and had to be reset.
Reflashing and then using the customiser without changing fonts works fine so I assume there is some problem with the fonts.
Many thanks BTW for your efforts on our behalf.
Much appreciated.
That might be a solution for VonBek then, to reflash with the Sony Updater. Too bad there's not a European Updater. It could be examined for changes against the US/Canada firmware.

Clock bug fix.
I'm thinking that this may be the last release I do to update localization. I posted in the Localization (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=248061&postcount=58) thread:
I've been mulling this over too.
I know how I'd do it in PRSCustomizer (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27177). I'd set up each phrase as a replaceable string: IOW "Settings" would be "$settings." If the localization requested was Bulgarian, I'd simply replace $settings with whatever word = Settings in Bulgarian. The translations would be stored in external text files, so adding localizations should be easy. This would require a main.xml with only one localization as a base.
I don't have the time right now to reduce main.xml to only one localization. However, main.xml just gets larger and larger with each localization added. I think the best path forward is to have localization as a selectable item from a dropdown box (you want Russian, you've got Russian) rather than have many, many languages included. This will also make adding languages much easier and keep main.xml at a reasonable size.
I'll have more time in about three-four weeks, if no one wants to work on a main.xml
Marcello 09-16-2008, 08:01 AM Hi guys !
Thanks to this site, I bought my Sony 2 months ago and I'm very glad I did : this gear is exactly what I needed ! I've read about a thousand pages so far, and I'm definitively convinced.
By the way, I wanted to try this promising tool but my antivirus (AVG free ed.) says prscustomizer.0.06.zip is infected with Trojan horse Agent.ACGE... :rifle:
Is it normal ?
Anyway, if this was not known yet, be aware !

I'm the author (and uploader) of PRSCustomizer and it's not virus-infected. I run a Linux-based system , so it's unlikely.

Just update your virus definitions and the false positive will go away. That's what worked here.

It's a false positive that the current AVG Free definition does not have a problem with. All that's needed is to make sure AVG Free is updated.

If you delete only .xml and .ttf files yes. Keep in mind that if you break the file structure in any way you'll break PRSCustomizer (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27177). Also, any space you save will be minimal.

I don't think that's possible. AFAIK, a book must be loaded before pages are calculated and that's an internal function, not something that's done via javascript and xml.

How about file size (and file type, while we are at it) ?
That gives good indication on book size.

That gives good indication on book size.
The operations you're asking for are parts of the rudiments of file management; getting file size and type imply being other to do other file operations, e.g. delete, copy, etc.
It may be possible to do these things with Sony's xml, but I've never done them. I believe that someone added in a delete function for the old firmware...when I have time I'll look at the code and see if it gives me hints.
JSWolf 09-18-2008, 09:13 AM The old delete for the 500 was useless. It hung the 500 if you tried to delete any content in a collection. If we have code to do things to content then it needs to take into account collections or it's just useless.

I recall reading about the collection problem, thanks for the reminder. I wasn't planning on modifying content, I just want to read the code to see how they interacted with the filesystem.
Right now my priority is fine-tuning localization. I have single-language selection working, but I need to do cleanup and testing.

It is sure better if it includes collections, but it is only useless if you exclusively work with collections. In my case, I seldom use collections, so it would be mostly useful. Wether this partial fix would be worth the time to the developer is up to him. I would be grateful, as I am for the delete function that doesn't work with collections.
brycej 09-20-2008, 01:09 AM Would it be possible to add an option to set the following variable in the environment section of the kconfig.xml file?
<variable name="bbebJustification" value="false" />
This would turn off the automatic right justification on the reader.

You're kidding me! We can disable right justification? Jeff, this is most interesting. I too would really like to see this.

Imagine this scene...
You re away from home with your 500. You decide to delete a book using the delete a book hack. You try to delete this book only to find that you've accidentally deleted a book that was part of a collection. Your 500 now needs a reset. You don't have a pin or paperclip or anything on you to fit in the hole to push the reset button. Now you finally find a shop to purchase something to push the reset button with. You find that the collection that book was in is no longer able to be navigated to due to the deletion. So until you can get back to the computer to sort things out, you are left with other books unable to be read and you may also look your last page read and even any bookmarks.
Now I don't know exactly what will happen on a 500 when you do delete a book that's in a collection so some of what I put is just a guess based on the usage of my 505. But, I did try this on my 505 and found that I had to hit the reset button, delete the collection, and recreate it.

I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
Sure, I understand, but that goes with collections. For those of us that don't use them the problem is non existant.
Anyway, deleting a book needs various steps, select the book, utilities, delete and confirm. Seems hard to do all this by mistake in the wrong book, in the wrong place, at the wrong moment. It would be far easier to just drop it and nobody is asking for a string to tie the Reader to the wrist.
There may be a way around it though. Sort of a compromise. Suppose you name the collection books starting with a code (Aubrey-Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian would start with AM1-Master & Commander, AM2-Post Captain...), so you have all your collections together in the title index and you can freely delete them. It is not exactly the same, but you have all your collection books bunched up together and in the right order. If you want your collections to be after all the independent books, just add zz to the code (ZZAM1-Master & Commander). All your collections will be behind your independent books and in good order. I know it is not the same, it is a compromise.
On the other hand, I still don't know if the reader's new firmware can delete collection books properly on it's own, which would fix the problem straight away.

Assuming you meant 505, you can delete books in a collection w/o issues...well, just one. With this firmware I deleted all the books in a collection and the empty collection stayed on the reader until I deleted it via the computer.

With the new firmware, the 505 can delete books from collections. I've not yet deleted the last book in a collection, so I have no idea if the collection stays or not. But my guess is that you'd end up with an empty collection.

You should check out the file prsfiles/kconfig. It's got font options you might like to study. In particular accepted font names, and the expected path.

Your Customizer is very useful and substantially enhances the Reader's usefulness and the reader's enjoyment.
Especially, for the average non-programmer type, the instructions are detailed, clear and workable.
Again, great job.

Brainstem 09-23-2008, 01:01 PM First of all, thank you for the customizer!
I seem to be having a problem.
After I use the custom flash and connect the reader to the ebook library, I get Reader icon with "error" beside it. I then ran Sony's updater to revert to the original settings, everything worked and connected well. I installed the customizer again, connected the Reader to the library and the same icon with "error" came up. My SD card shows up below that.
Does anyone know what could be causing this error?
Thanks.

I don't know. My assumption is that kconfig.xml gets loaded at boot, so I don't know if any of it's values can be changed by main.xml, but I'll play around with it and see.

TetraKM 09-25-2008, 09:08 AM Hi Jeff,
I have an unusual request :o
I wnat to be able to adapt the reader so that i can use the USB port to control it.
I work with disabled clients and those I work with would love to be able to read a book but dont have the motor skills to press the small button on the sony reader.
I wondered if you could give me some advice on whether if using a switch a single press could get the reader to move the highlighting round (scan the options) on the screen then with another press pause the software, followed by another press to make the selection – making the whole process a controlled by a button press of a switch?
Does this make any sense.
If it doesn’t feel free to PM me so we can discuss it further.
Also if this is beyond what you can do with your new software from the reader is there any way you can let me have the code or what the reader uses as an operating system so I can look into adapting one.

Basically, all PRSCustomizer does is jigger xml files. What you're looking for are beyond its humble abilities :)
Sony's Reader uses open source Linux as its OS base, but unfortunately, the application software (the reader) is closed, closed, closed :(
Look for the OpenInkPot topic here on mobileread or google them for their website. They are working to develop a truly open software stack for the Sony and other readers that would be open to just the types of modifications you're looking for.

Thanks. I googled and downloaded it. I know what you mean. I finally got the customizer to work. There was a file corruption somewhere. I had to reflash the PRS Customizer and Sony's update around 6 times each before it looked good (a couple of times I was getting vertical lines across the screen creating a grid and random artifacts) on the reader AND was recognized by elibrary and calibre.
Thanks again.

I did not look at the iconsets in the zip file. I've only looked at them via the links on your site. So if the 5th iconset is actually ok in the zip file, then substituting the one in the ZIP file for the one on the site will fix that.
Did you sort out the wording for the justification in 0.08b? The justification is not right justification it is full justification unless you hack it to be left justified.

Jon, I'm not convinced you're correct here. I think the text says what it does. I welcome feedback from others.
JSWolf 09-28-2008, 03:55 PM Right justification is the exact opposite of left justification. What the 505 does by default is full justification. So if we had right justification, we'd have a ragged left side of the page.

JSWolf is correct. It should read "turn on left justification only", or something of the sort.
JeffElkins 09-29-2008, 02:27 PM We'll have to agree to disagree on this one guys, so let's move on.

Completely your call. It really is an extremely minor issue. I doubt anyone really cares about the wording (except maybe JSWolf).
frandavid100 10-04-2008, 07:35 AM Hi, I would like to ask for two additional features:
-Turn the reader into "lock" state when you slide the power switch, instead of "sleep" state. It would be basically the same, only the screen would not go blank. Maybe the word "Locked" could appear where the page number is usually placed. Some people mentioned this possibility in this thread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19422).
-Turn the reader into "sleep" if you keep the power switch slided for a couple seconds, in case you don't want other people to see what you're reading (that's the only case I can imagine where sleep is more useful than locked).
Do you think those two could be possible?
JSWolf 10-04-2008, 08:38 AM JSWolf is correct. It should read "turn on left justification only", or something of the sort.
I'll have to take a few photos to show the differences of left, right, and full justification so there can be no doubt that the wording is incorrect.

Maybe you should let it go. It's a trivial issue. Jeff said he doesn't agree and that we should move on, and I support his decision.

I don't know. There's a native lock-mode in advanced settings, but I don't know how accessible it is to xml/javascript.
frandavid100 10-04-2008, 02:49 PM I'll play close attention to this thread. Please, when you can take a look at it tell us whether it's possible or not. It's the only thing I miss from the 505.

Offhand I don't see any hooks in the xml offering access to the lock function. That does not mean it's not possible, perhaps someone else knows a way.
Valloric 10-05-2008, 05:47 PM Jeff, remember that clock bug you fixed a while ago, where one could "lose" an hour? I don't know what it is, but I have the latest version of PRSC installed (I think... it could be 0.07), and I've just lost an hour. It's 23.46 here, and the Reader says 22.46. It was working properly yesterday. I don't know what caused it, but maybe you should take another look at the code.

No problems here. Is this reproducible?

Like I said, I have no idea what happened. Yesterday it was working fine, today I start it up an I've lost an hour. It looked exactly like the old bug, which I experienced before.
I'll keep an eye out if it happens again.

The old bug didn't involve loss of time...it had to do with the proper am/pm string being concatenated to the end of the string containing the time when displaying a 12hr clock between the hours of 12midnight and 1am. If you're losing time that's a new bug.
Did you happen to see any strange light flying around your car yesterday?

Huh... I thought the old bug was about losing an hour. I experienced it a few weeks ago. Also, apparently I'm not the only one (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=263048&postcount=15) who's lost an hour. And now that I think about it, just like that guy, I did transfer a new book just before noticing the time difference. I transfered the book (well, a newspaper) using feedbooks's NewsStand.
Did you happen to see any strange light flying around your car yesterday?
Nice. Should have seen that one coming. :)
JeffElkins 10-06-2008, 11:01 AM Huh... I thought the old bug was about losing an hour. I experienced it a few weeks ago.
Look backwards in this thread:
Speaking of the clock am/pm--I noticed a small bug in the version I'm using. It reports any time between midinight (00:00) and 12:59 am as "p"or pm. It then correctly changes to "a" or am at 1:00. Not a big deal, but was wondering if this has been fixed in a more current version.
Valloric 10-06-2008, 01:44 PM Look backwards in this thread:
Don't get me wrong, I believe you I misunderstood what the bug was. I'm just saying I lost an hour a few weeks ago, and yesterday too. Also, it appears others have experienced it as well. It may not be related to PRSC though.

No problem, but I really don't think it's a PRSCustomiser issue. The Javascript clock code uses the time.getHours() and time.getMinutes() functions to grab current time from the OS, then display it. It does not alter the values it obtains. In other words, AFAICS, it's a read-only function.
kovidgoyal 10-06-2008, 04:32 PM Neither the 500 not the 505 have an actual clock chip, which means their time keeping is spotty at best. Typically, they rely on resyncing the time everytime they're connected to a computer.
astrodad 10-15-2008, 12:49 PM For some reason, the joystick page turn hack doesn't seem to work well with ePub books, at least for me. The page forward works ok, but the page back jumps into the history, which seems pretty random. Anyone seeing anything similar?

Yes. The joypad option only affects page-forward. The left-arrow still is tied to history.
Thoran 10-17-2008, 05:22 AM Hi Jeff,
please let me ask somethink...
In the reading-mode the most used function is surely the page-forward turn.
Now with the hack, it is possible to use the right arrow key of the joypad to move forward, - very fine!
My question now: would it be possible to program the big center joypad-button in addition to a page-forward turn too?
This would be very nice. Only in reading-mode of course, in which short-pressing the center joypad-button is functionless until now.
The "shut-off"-function (if this hack is enabled) works with longer pressing the button, so this maybe no problem. If nevertheless, perhaps it is possible to disable this function in reading-mode?
I think, it would be sufficiently, if the shut-off-function works only in the main-menu.
Thoran
Nope. You need it if you want to enter a number page.
gwynevans 10-17-2008, 08:01 AM And to follow links...
JeffElkins 10-17-2008, 09:16 AM I suppose you could use a press-hold for forward page-turns though. Then you'd still have press for enter-key functions. Also, if you don't use the reader for music (I never do) the volume toggle could be remapped as enter.
I'm having my first cup of coffee, I'm probably missing something :)
JSWolf 10-17-2008, 10:10 AM Mapping the enter as a page turn button would lose too much other functionality. Not worth the hassle (IMHO).
JeffElkins 10-17-2008, 10:12 AM Mapping the enter as a page turn button would lose too much other functionality. Not worth the hassle (IMHO).
2nd. cup of coffee: I tend to agree.
jedavis1 10-17-2008, 10:50 AM Somewhere, someone asked about mapping the press and hold enter to suspend instead of turn off, could this be done?
JSWolf 10-17-2008, 10:56 AM Somewhere, someone asked about mapping the press and hold enter to suspend instead of turn off, could this be done?
Why? The "power" button does that just fine.
JeffElkins 10-17-2008, 11:10 AM Somewhere, someone asked about mapping the press and hold enter to suspend instead of turn off, could this be done?
Sure. <boolean key="0x27-hold" do="doSuspend"/>
astrodad 10-17-2008, 08:23 PM Yes. The joypad option only affects page-forward. The left-arrow still is tied to history.
Ah, didn't read the fine print. Thanks for the info. I gotta say, with the new epub support (lightning fast font resizing!) and these hacks, my Reader is a lean, mean, book reading machine!

You've got the correct firmware. I've never bricked my Reader using PRSCustomizer, but of course no guarantees.

I've went through the flashing process at least 20 times now, and I've never bricked the Reader. Also, you are not forever committed to the hacks, since you can always reflash the device to the default firmware.
Also, if you ever brick it, there's an easy and sure-fire way of unbricking it.

I have bricked mine like 30 times (sometimes 5 times in a day) but always when trying to replace fonts. However, there is plenty of life beyond bricking. Don't worry about it. It is not pleasant, but bricking is not an issue.

^_Pepe_^ 10-29-2008, 10:13 AM Hi There!
Just a question (advice) for JeffElkis.
My problem is shown here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29839), but basically is that after PRSCustomizer, I've found that Windows cannot detect my reader, and freezes up after disconnect.
The customization process, was ok (I guess, but rebooting wasn't automatic, and I forced it), but I still feel that SD Card files could be corrupted.
Well...and now? I can not use the PRS Updater (sony) because "no PRS505 is detected" by the software, so I can not use the 18.****0041 trick.
Any idea???
Thanks a lot,

From the wiki:
Recovering From Catastrophic Failure (Unbricking)
If you manage to completely brick the device to where it cannot boot at all (remains at "Starting up..." page indefinitely), you will need to do the following to recover to the factory flash image.
1. Use a paper clip or pin to depress the reset button in the small hole on the back of the unit. Turn the unit on.
2. Wait until the "Starting up..." page is displayed for a few seconds and you see the orange LED blinking. Just count like 3 to 4 sec. from the moment you see the LED blinking.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 ten times.
4. On the tenth reset let the Reader boot and after a few minutes the message "Firmware update is not finished correctly. Please execute firmware update again." will be displayed.
This worked for me when I bricked after trying some madness with font replacement. At that point I connected the USB and reflashed to the original Sony firmware. Good luck!

You've got that right! Why Sony couldn't have done something sensible like "press reset while depressing enter" or something is beyond me. Of course they are famous for crap software.

Just touching bases for support, Pepe. Obviously, if you had been applying 505 software to a 500, problems would result.
Regarding the bricking of your 505, I'd just advise you to try again with the unbricking. Also search the forum for others experience in unbricking the 505. I know that I was able to unbrick mine after changing fonts and in one case swapping .jpg for .png files as an experiment. Both times I used the 10 reset method. Good luck!

The second result.replace() must use with "/book - page/g" with no "s"
The result is it will not change the locale for the amount of book is not plural (<2).

JeffElkins 11-25-2008, 09:41 AM Thanks UK downloaders for your feedback! I'll release the finished version later this week.
Lilly 11-25-2008, 02:12 PM JeffElkins, my reader battery won't hold charge and also the volume button is loose; I just spoke to Sony support and they decided to replace the reader. I'm mailing it to them tomorrow. What is the best way to remove the PRSCustomizer? I have my contact information in the setting and since the volume button is loose, I was unable to do a hard reset. I saw a Restore Defaults in the Settings menu but nothing happened when I press it and the bookmark button. Since I'm getting a new reader, I need to restore it before I send it back to Sony tomorrow. :help:
Thanks

Use the Sony Updater to reflash your 505. Get the updater HERE (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PRS505). Search the forum for usage instructions. Good luck!
Dave Berk 11-29-2008, 10:41 AM Thanks a lot, Jeff, for all the hard work that went into creating PRS-Customizer (and to Igor as well). I'm about to order a 505 and I can't how many usefull stuff there is for the reader...
One request, though. In the Localization menu, could you add an option for None?

Don't check the Localization checkbox. Won't that do what you're seeking?
JeffElkins 11-29-2008, 11:36 AM PRSCustomizer v1.02 is now available. This version adds support for UK firmware 1.2 and also fixes a newly discovered bug that may affect USB connections under some conditions, causing your Reader to lock up requiring a reset. Download link (http://www.prscustomizer.com)

OK, I see your point.
For 1.1 (USA/Canada) you'll have to do it manually for now. I'll see about including this as an option for 1.3.
1.1 Firmware
1. Run PRSCustomizer, choosing your options.
2. Open the prsfiles/font.2 folder
3. Copy the *.ttf files to sdcard/files.505.1.1.00.18040/opt/sony/ebook/FONT/
For 1.2 (UK) firmware simply select the Unicode fonts checkbox. Localization is not an option.

VonBek 11-30-2008, 03:09 AM Hi Jeff, I patched my UK 505 last night, and it now fails to get past the starting up page, I am asuming its because of the fonts problem.
Two questions...
1. When i try to use the Sony updater it won't because the firmware is already uptodate, how do I get round this.
2. Once I have done the Sony updater part, do I use the UK or USA part or your patcher.
Thanks for your help.
Ian.
VonBek 11-30-2008, 03:35 AM Update to my earlier message.
I have now managed to do the Sony Update.
Just edited the file 'PRSVersion.dat' to 120018051.
I take it I can now re run PRSCustomizer using the USA 1.1 option.
Thanks Ian.
VonBek 11-30-2008, 04:09 AM Well I retried PRSCustomizer using the USA 1.1 option, and without touching the Icons.
Exactly the same results as the first time. It just freezes on the starting up page !
I have redone the Sony Updater, and everyhting works fine again.
Anyone any Ideas as to why it keeps failing to start after the patching ?
Cheers Ian.

Ian, I have had very similar problems today using PRSCustomizer on a UK PRS505 - freezing on the Starting up screen. Like you I have managed to unbrick the reader using the Sony Updater program, but if you look in the setting this means we're now running with the US firmware 1.1 and not the UK firmware 1.2. Anyone know how to get the UK firmware back onto the device?
I even tried replaced cramfs.Fsk.img and cramfs.Rootfs.img in the Sony Updater directory with versions that I have previously created from my UK device, but it still flashed the US firmware into the reader. :smack:

OK, so obviously the UK option's not working.
To get back to square one (UK 1.2) firmware-wise, take your cramfs.Fsk.img file and copy it to the Universal Flasher SD card with the name new_opt.img - Insert the card into your Reader and from the Flasher menu choose #4, then #6.
I've placed version 1.2 on hold until I can sort this out. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks Jeff - that worked a treat! I have successfully loaded up the UK firmware and then applied my changes to applicationStart.xml (clock and page turn on joystick enter). I don't know what went wrong with the PRSCustomizer though. As far as I can remember I used the following options:
Name
Telephone
Email
Firmware 1.2
Uniform font size
VonBek - if you need the UK firmware then PM me your email address and I'll forward it to you.

You've got that right! :)
I reflashed to 1.2 UK firmware and PRSCustomizer promptly bricked my Reader. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm working on it.
Addendum: after 4 or 5 more brickings I still haven't solved the UK problem, but I did stumble across a rapid unbricking method faster than the 10-resets method:
1. You're stuck at "Reader starting up..."
2. Paperclip the reset, slide the power toggle.
3. When the screen goes blank, quickly connect the PC usb cable.
The Reader should reboot and show the USB connect in a minute or so, then you can use the US Updater.

What is the 10-resets method - I have seen it mentioned elsewhere without anyone actually describing what it is.
I think I did something similar to your 1, 2 3 to unbrick my reader over the weekend. Anyway, it was a lot of trial and error to get it working again. :smash:

See this page at the Wiki (http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Sony_Reader_hack). Most of it is PRS500-related, but the 10 resets method works for the 505.

mikeywilliams25 12-01-2008, 05:31 PM A query - I have a UK reader which has been flashed using the US updater.
Should I now use your v1.03 and select 1.2 or do I have to somehow get my reader back to a 1.2.
How do I do that with no backed up cramfs.Fsk.img and cramfs.Rootfs.img files?
I'm not sure it there is a hardware difference that makes a UK reader different or if the US updater makes it identical to a US reader.

As far as we know, the hardware is identical.
You essentially have a US Reader (your about screen should report 1.1), so use the 1.1 option for PRSCustomizer. There is currently no way (other than the Sony Updater) to flash a cramfs.Rootfs.img and that's locked into the US version via a checksum. To get your UK userland back (which is all that really matters) is dead simple - you just use the #4 option of the Universal Flasher. If you need a UK cramfs.Fsk.img drop me a pm.

jlbfoot 12-08-2008, 06:26 AM Hi Jeff, and others,
I've had my 505 about a week and love it! I tried customizing it yesterday without success. First, I used a Sony memory stick instead of the SD card. I started flashing, but after selecting option 5, I got a message saying that file ... could not be found. I then selected "6" and got a similar message and after reboot, nothing. So I tried with an SD card with the same results. I eventually used the new firmware option and had to download and replace the firmware. I had the newest version anyway, prior to the flashing. I am putting the files, not the folder, directly on the empty SD card. I have the latest firmware. What else could I be doing wrong? I can try again later today if you need the exact file in the error message, I just have to run to work early today. Thanks!
Ok...I found time to document what I am seeing...
After I select option 5 I see:
Error copying the files from b:/files.5/5.1.1.00.18040/opt
After I select option 6 I see:
/TMP/self_upgrade/new_opt.img not found.
Thanks again!

These are error messages produced by Igorsk's Universal Flasher. The UF constructs a flashable image based on the contents in the folders; in your case the folder in the root of the sd card: files.505.1.1.00.18040.
On the sd card, check the contents of files.505.1.1.00.18040/ - drill down through the folders and make note of the contents. In the folder "application" you should see the file kconfig.xml, in the folder "resources" you should see the file applicationStart.xml and in the folder "scripts" you should see the file main.xml. Are all these files present?

Hmm. I'm at a loss. I'd try re-downloading and re-installing on the off-chance that some bits got corrupted and if that does no good I'd cross-post into the Universal Flasher (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26831) thread where Igor might be able to help. Anyone else have any ideas?

For the menus, go to the About screen; you should see 0 for clock, 1 for localization. Press 1 to choose your language. (note to self: this needs to be added to the documentation)
The personalized logo requires work on your part. From the readme:
Customized Logo
Did you know you could change your Reader's logo? (The black bar at the top of the screen that says "Reader.") You'll need access to a graphics editor, such as Photoshop or Gimp. In the directory prsfiles, you'll see two files:logo.png and kBookAssets.png. The logo.png file is a 210x70 file. Add your personalization details to this file, and paste it into the upper left corner of the kBookAssets.png file, covering the large text "Reader." Once you're done, you can select the "Replace logo" checkbox. After you flash and reboot, you should have a customized logo.

Howdy Julia,
I'm assuming you're using PRSCustomizer 1.04. If you're not please download it.
Those options are checkboxes, joypad page forward on the left and volume key page turns on the left. If you checked those boxes, please try one more time and re-flash. If it still fails let me know and what firmware version you're using (1.1 USA, 1.2 UK).

JeffElkins 12-10-2008, 01:24 PM I wanted to post a message regarding firmware 1.3, now released for Readers sold in France. The next version of PRSCustomizer will support it, and I bet that many folks will switch to it. To quote igorsk:
The French firmware is quite advanced, they added switchable localization, customizable date format, proper (locale-specific) title sorting and grouping.
The xml is more complex than the previous versions, but I've successfully ported the clock and now have 1.3 working fully with the Universal Flasher. The cool thing is that Sony has added localization via an xml file, kbookLanguageAssets.
I'm testing a feature to PRSCustomizer for the 1.3 firmware that allows one to load a user defined language file; this eliminates Porkupan having to rewrite his routines each time a new language is added, then me having to port his changes to PRSCustomizer. I think this will be very popular with the international users; it also opens up the possibility of customizing the Reader's menus and prompts in your own language.
I've attached the English language xml file. Changing it is simply a matter of editing a text file:
To localize my Reader to Finnish I would change:
<string id="STR_NODE_TITLE_BEGIN" value="Begin"
To:
<string id="STR_NODE_TITLE_BEGIN" value="Aloittaa"
Changing the date format is equally easy:
MM/DD/YY
<string id="STR_FORMAT_DATE" value="MM/DD/YY"/
or DD/MM/YY
<string id="STR_FORMAT_DATE" value="DD/MM/YY"/

Sorry, I don't maintain logs. Probably should do logs, but since I'm not being paid, I never got that formal. 1.4 allows you to load user-defined fonts and iconsets and also specify that your already-loaded fonts and iconsets be left alone. 1.4 also loads your personal kBookAssets file for a custom logo. I also did internal code cleanup making things more efficient and easier to maintain. Each release lives on its own. If you're happy, don't upgrade.

nmclain 12-10-2008, 04:31 PM I tried to very carefully follow the instructions on downloading the firmware. But, now my new reader is stuck on uprading the firmware. It will also go to a screen that tells me to: Retry to upgrade the firmware.
I have searched the forum and can't find any instructions on retrying the firmware upgrade.
I have tried all the solutions on unlocking the Reader. I have tried soft resets and hard resets. None of them worked. I can't get the reader to the point where either the PC or the reader will recognize the USB connection. I also can't get the reader to recognize the old firmware on the SD card.
Any other help?
Thanks

Have you tried running the standalone (Windows) Firmware Updater app?

nmclain 12-10-2008, 06:08 PM Oh, and I have tried the updater over from Sony. I am going to let the reader sit overnight and try it again.
igorsk 12-10-2008, 09:29 PM Here's the updater which you need to run:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=PRS505&upd_id=3622&os_id=7
nmclain 12-11-2008, 12:16 AM Thanks for the replies. I let it sit for two hours. Reset it 10 times. (I think I had forgotten to do that) ran the updater. It's back.
I don't know which part did the trick. Now I know that I can get it back, I'm debating trying to customize it again. I might just do it.
Thanks very much.
Nancy

MSWallack 12-12-2008, 09:56 AM Can the French v1.3 firmware be installed on a US-based Reader? Would I want to install it? If so, where can it be found?
JeffElkins 12-12-2008, 10:10 AM Can the French v1.3 firmware be installed on a US-based Reader? Would I want to install it? If so, where can it be found?
All of the firmwares can be used with a US Reader. Switching from one to another and back is simple too, for development I do it a lot. Should you? If you want to localize your Reader or personalize menus and prompts. Look to the PRSCustomizer site for more details.
keng2000 12-13-2008, 08:06 AM What I suggest for 1.05
1. Customed Locale for other languages
2. Selecable Locale switch for select only which languages users want (not all of them)

#2 is already an option for firmware 1.1. Use the language dropdown to select your language.
#1 will be available, but only for firmware 1.3

Well, there's now built-in help. Right now it's just a copy of the readme though :)
xanlexian 12-17-2008, 07:07 AM Hello Jeff,
First off, thanks a ton for the PRSCustomizer! Wonderful little application!
There, now that I've schmoozed up a bit -- I have a feature request.
If it is at all possible, could the NEXT PAGE/PREVIOUS PAGE buttons on the far right-hand side of the reader be swapped? Where the bottom button takes you to the next page, and the top one goes to the previous page? I know it sounds stupid, but I can't tell you how many times I've been reading, hit the button and think to myself, "whoa. deja vu. I think I've just read this bit... Oh, I did just read this..."
Also, would it be possible to decrease the time for the "10-page skip" where you hold the forward/back button for half the time that currently required for this operation to be performed?
Many, many thanks!
JSWolf 12-17-2008, 07:47 AM It is possible to swap the page turn buttons. As for the 10 pages at a time being faster, that I am not sure of.
keng2000 12-17-2008, 08:01 AM I think you can do swapping the page by modifing xml file. But it should be done by yourself unless we have the program for changing individual options.
"Long press" is long. Half of them will be "Short"

I'll look at swapping page turn, but it won't make 1.05. Regarding the skip, there's nothing in the xml that would allow me to change that.
keng2000 12-19-2008, 05:09 AM Firmware 1.3 Testing:
I would like to report some update with French Firmware 1.3.
I have updated to FW 1.3 from instruction on PRSCustomizer web (Thanks Jeff)
Then using Universal Flasher 2.1 to update FONTS. (only this now)
After that testing the PDF (A4 size) Books,
Notice reflow from S ro M and to L is a lots better, smoother and some floating senetence is gone (from the same file testing on FW1.1)
Add:
kBookAssets still works
I also cross-post to Universal Flasher forum

Many thanks and a merry Christmas to all of you:xmas:

I'll look into it.
When you say that 'the page changes from pressure" has the page actually changed or is the display dimmed with "PAGE _XXX " displayed, waiting for an enter keypress?
If the latter is true, you can press "menu" to remain on your original page. If your page has changed pressing the left-arrow on the joypad (history back) should return you to your original page.
You can also use PRSCustomizer to turn off number keys when reading (but lose the ability to go directly to a page). They remain functional otherwise.
Liam Nolan 12-20-2008, 10:42 AM Sometimes just the page number but other times the page has changed.

<boolean key="kSleep" do="doSleep"/>
<boolean key="kSuspend" do="doSuspend"/>

Sorry, I tried remapping the functions above w/o any luck. If someone else has suggestions, please pitch in.

sexinxs 12-21-2008, 05:28 PM I wanted to post a message regarding firmware 1.3, now released for Readers sold in France. The next version of PRSCustomizer will support it, and I bet that many folks will switch to it. To quote igorsk:...

.... I think this will be very popular with the international users; it also opens up the possibility of customizing the Reader's menus and prompts in your own language.
I've attached the English language xml file. Changing it is simply a matter of editing a text file:
To localize my Reader to Finnish I would change:
To:
Changing the date format is equally easy:
MM/DD/YY
or DD/MM/YY
I managed succesfully to change date format editing kbookLanguageAssets file and to modify some text labels I didn't like.... but..
Can anyone explain me why even if in kbookLanguageAssets I can find those two strings:
<string id="STR_UI_MESSAGE_USBDONOT" value="Do not disconnect"/>
<string id="STR_UI_MESSAGE_USBCONNECTED" value="USB connected"/>
when I connect my reader to the pc those messages are in french?? (USB connectè... etc)
I edited them with no efect... Maybe the procedure I use is wrong?? I edited the kbookLanguageAssets, then I placed it in the folder K:\files.505.1.3.00.22070\opt\sony\ebook\applicati on\resources\scripts on the MemoryStick and then I flashed with option 5 an 6... after reboot other changes worked perfectly (ie date format) but the two messages in the bottom bar when the reader is USB connected were still in french...
Thanks

The default language also has to be specified in storageStart.xml. Perhaps, elsewhere also, I'm still working out bugs for PRSCustomizer 1.05

For Firmware 1.3
1. Download PRSCustomizer and unzip.
2. Place the attached files in:
sdcard/files.505.1.3.00.22070/opt/sony/ebook/application/resources/scripts/
3. Place the contents of the sdcard folder on the root of a secure digital card.
4. Insert card in Reader. When Igorsk's Universal Flasher appears, choose option #5, then option #6.
5. When your Reader reboots, it should be localized to French.
The next version of PRSCustomizer (1.05) will support 1.3 natively.

Thanks again Jeff

Here's a puzzler for you guys. I grabbed the software, followed instructions, and flashed the new firmware. Things worked fine, personal info, customization, the works. But then I tried to connect it to the USB cable...
First attempt, it connects up to the computer, but the screen just stays as it was, no switch to the "USB connected" screen. After disconnecting and reconnecting the usb cable, it turns off as soon as the cable is plugged in, and won't turn on without using the reset button on the back. Ditto with inserting a memory card.
I managed to resolve this by leaving the SD card in and usb unplugged on resetting, going to "firmware update mode", and running Sony's updater. Then I tried to do it again, thinking I'd made some mistake the first time, but with the same results!
So now I'm back to firmware 1.1 vanilla, no customization. Any ideas?
***EDIT*** OK, I've got it working now, I was using 1.1, seems that switching to 1.3 was what it needed to work. Still, I suppose that kind of thing is something to make note of
Also, I note that the credits seem to be much shorter in the modified firmware than unmodified. Not really important, but something else to make note of
keng2000 01-06-2009, 10:30 AM Van, I don't know exactly you did. but the step is
1. if you are 1.1, you must upgrade to 1.3 first by using PRSCustomizer with new_opt
2. Now, you are 1.3, you can use PRSCustomizer 1.05 with 1.3 option.
3. If it is bricked, you must re-brick with Sony updater with 1.1 (I have never seen Full Sony updater 1.3) then goto step 1.
Jeff, Thanks for the new update.
ferridder 01-08-2009, 06:13 PM Hi,
I'm trying to customize my Reader, but the firmware upgrader does not appear when I put the SD card into the reader. I have carefully put the contents of the sdcard folder on the root of a new card, as instructed.
EDIT: The problem persists with 1.05a.
Any ideas?

When you insert an sd card, you should see a black circle with arrows seeming to spin, indicating that the Reader is trying to access the card. Do you see that?

Yes, I do. The arrows spin as usual, but when they have stopped the Reader is in the same state as before inserting the card (reading/main menu/...).
JeffElkins 01-09-2009, 08:56 AM Yes, I do. The arrows spin as usual, but when they have stopped the Reader is in the same state as before inserting the card (reading/main menu/...).
The only thing I can suggest is that you format your card and try again, try with a different card, or both. Be absolutely sure that the contents of the sdfolder live in the root of the sd card and are not enclosed in a folder.
millerjpmd 01-09-2009, 11:53 AM I am trying to get through all 34 pages of this thread and to a new user it is a little overwhelming. I use a Mac (OS 10.5.6) and was under the assumption that firmware updates could only be done with a Windows system and the sony Library software. What I get from reading these responses is that is not true and using the PRSCustomizer you can also do that. Is there a way to determine what firmware is currently installed? Does anyone have any recommendations specific to Mac as to definite do or don't do when ussing the PRSCustomizer?
Thanks,

No special considerations for the Mac at all. To determine your current firmware, look in Settings/About.
Good luck!
