View Full Version : Karma and long (-winded?) Comments. I Like!
nrapallo 07-02-2008, 05:11 PM OK, I've got karma on the brain again.
This time, I've noticed that it is next to impossible to properly scroll back and forth when typing in the 'Comment' that is associated with the Karma given to someone. Makes me, sometimes, want to cut short my (well-thought?) comment. However, others have not been so deterred!
So a question to all those that have received lengthy comments, ....What is the lengthiest comment, in terms of number of lines of text, that you have received?
In my case, there is a tie for the lengthiest karma comment; it is 4 lines and both from the same person (hint: she resides in Paris and uses an ebookwise 1150 ).
Does this really need to be a Poll? Let's see...
Taylor514ce 07-02-2008, 05:14 PM I have a 6-liner from Queen Zee. A 7-liner from her, and a 7-liner from VR. Several 4-liners.
Be not deterred. Terred's are smelly, for one thing. Much better to be alert. The world needs more lerts.
zelda_pinwheel 07-02-2008, 05:28 PM holy cow, 7 lines ??? how is that even possible ? there's a limit on how many characters you can use in those things. are you sure you counted right ? here's a tip : fingers on one hand, or fingers on both hands ? (i can't remember what i could have said, but now i wish i could read all everybody else's comments...).
i have several 4 line ones, and 3 line ones, and my longest is 5 lines (ex aequo nekokami and cthulhu).
Nate the great 07-02-2008, 05:37 PM I have one 7 liner from Taylor, one 4 liner, and three 3 liners.
nrapallo 07-02-2008, 05:41 PM ...(i can't remember what i could have said, but now i wish i could read all everybody else's comments...)...
Somehow I have the feeling that the 'time stamp' on that Karma
would have been, I don't know, say about or around 3:00 AM... :nana:
Alexander Turcic 07-02-2008, 05:43 PM 8-liner from NatCh. But it also includes a smilie (without it, it'd be 7 lines). ;)
zelda_pinwheel 07-02-2008, 05:45 PM Somehow I have the feeling that the 'time stamp' on that Karma
would have been, I don't know, say about or around 3:00 AM... :nana:
what are you trying to say ? i ramble more at 3 am ? i'll admit to being frequently incoherent and finding nothing amiss in non sequitur land at 3 am, however many many people have commented that my usual mode is verbose : on, whatever the hour. (not everyone appreciates that. *snif*)
nrapallo 07-02-2008, 06:01 PM what are you trying to say ? i ramble more at 3 am ? i'll admit to being frequently incoherent and finding nothing amiss in non sequitur land, however many many people have commented that my usual mode is verbose : on. (not everyone appreciates that. *snif*)
No, the rambling (verbose: on) seems pretty much a given at any time. :p
I was trying to hone in on your comment "i can't remember...", but in retrospect, when "you (meaning *I*) have to explain yourself, you probably shouldn't have gone there".
Luv 'ya just the way you are... :sweethear:
Taylor514ce 07-02-2008, 06:03 PM Zee, your comment began "How ironic..." and ended "...for YOUR idea!"
zelda_pinwheel 07-02-2008, 06:08 PM Zee, your comment began "How ironic..." and ended "...for YOUR idea!"
well, that's cryptic...
actually i have 2 ideas of what that could have been about, although it's pure speculation. and there could be more.
RWood 07-02-2008, 10:54 PM I think my max was 15 lines when someone leaned on the repeat key. Seriously, 2 lines is the max that I remember. I'm not saying that the comments make me feel like a strolling musician at a restaurant that is tipped to go play at a table on the other side of the dining room (although one a while back did sorta strike me that way. :D)
Patricia 07-02-2008, 11:08 PM I have a six-line comment, several four-line comments and a fair number of people who didn't leave any comment at all. Doubtless they reasoned that actions could speak as loudly as words.
montsnmags 07-03-2008, 02:14 AM I've got a 7-liner from Madam, and two sixes, from T and Zee.
What I find odd is when people so nicely PM me a quick thanks for the Karma, and I think to myself, "Okay...umm, sure. No worries" while desperately trying to remember what I gave them karma for. My short-term memory is not good.
Cheers,
Marc

i have a few without comments as well but they're in the minority, which i'm glad of. after the karma fortunes, my favorite part of karma is the comments. even if actions *do* speak as loudly as words, i still appreciate a good narrative.
yvanleterrible sent me the "longest" karma containing four lines. ;)
jerryleejr 07-03-2008, 06:20 AM I didnt even know you could read them so does that take me into the negatives??

pshrynk 07-03-2008, 09:04 AM All I've got is a three liner. From Queen Zee, of course.
zelda_pinwheel 07-03-2008, 09:30 AM maybe i should get a prize for being the most consistently hyper-verbose in karma comments.
vivaldirules 07-03-2008, 09:38 AM maybe i should get a prize for being the most consistently hyper-verbose in karma comments.
Indeed. I have an 8-liner from Queen Zee. I think Zelda deserves an award for Most Enthusiastic Giver of Thanks and Hugs and Kisses. Or maybe she should be ordained Queen Heraldress of Heraldry and Thanksgiving. So be it! Release the Gibbon of......okay, maybe that's over the top.
zelda_pinwheel 07-03-2008, 09:58 AM 8 lines ??? are you sure ???
...or have y'all been playing witht the font size on your browsers again ?
i've already been ordained Queen of Unutterable Silliness, and i'm pretty sure you can't accumulate those mandates, so i don't think i can be Queen of anything else, but an award for Most Enthusiastic Giver of Thanks and Hugs and Kisses would be fine with me.
zelda_pinwheel 07-03-2008, 10:01 AM look at that, a new personal record : i now have an EIGHT line karma message. i didn't think it could be done. and it would have been longer, clearly, if tirsales hadn't run into the character limit, since the comment ends abruptly mid-sentence...

Have you seen the full title of HRH, lately?

that's for sure. he doesn't like it if you touch his gibbon without asking.
zelda_pinwheel 07-03-2008, 10:04 AM Have you seen the full title of HRH, lately?
heu.... why ??
pshrynk 07-03-2008, 10:09 AM heu.... why ??
I tried to find a listing of the full title, but she's Queen of something like 16 countries and the entire Commonwealth, as well as some tradtional Dukedoms and such. It would rival a Queen Zee karma posting in length.
jerryleejr 07-03-2008, 10:16 AM look at that, a new personal record : i now have an EIGHT line karma message. i didn't think it could be done. and it would have been longer, clearly, if tirsales hadn't run into the character limit, since the comment ends abruptly mid-sentence...

give it time... you might be surprised.
nrapallo 07-03-2008, 10:56 AM ... and a fair number of people who didn't leave any comment at all. Doubtless they reasoned that actions could speak as loudly as words.
Patricia:
I have many of those "no comment" tributes as well; it's like a feeling of elation (receiving karma) and followed by emptiness (no comments). A bit like unrequited love—you put forth all your efforts only to be teased with nothing...
It does, however, remind me of a remarkable line in a TV adaptation of Twain's Prince and the Pauper (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0282100/), namely (and I paraphrase):"I shall take a slackened jaw, as a similar sign of respect", said the young Prince upon his first introduction to the Pauper!
So maybe actions do speak volumes....

:chinscratch: Maybe I should change the thread title to:Karma and the most longwinded comment from Queen Zee!
slayda 07-03-2008, 11:07 AM I was immeasurably pleased when I discovered how to see which statement I was being given karma for.
And Patricia, I also have many "zero line" karma comments.:(
But my best karma was for an entry that had no words in it. Loved that one.
jerryleejr 07-04-2008, 12:55 AM you can read the comments people leave when they give you karma by clicking on "User CP" in the blue menu bar (top left), then scroll down to the bottom of the page.
Zee,
I may be missing something the only thing at the bottom is the threads on which karma was given, So I am assuming that the comments were blank? Also this may be :offtopic: but is there a story to go with that user name?

Well, Jerry, Zelda was her "Operator name" when she worked in the boring, low-paid government position in the ironically named Multiversal Peace Corp as a pre-birth assassin (her job was to go back in time and kill the selected subject's grandfather in all Universes). Pinwheel was the name for the maneuver she'd use that...well, let's just say that if what she did to you didn't kill you, well you weren't going to be making babies in that lifetime.
You know...a typical salaried government employee. Crap job, crap pay, but the benefits were good (she got to jump the queue on her migration-application to this universe, for starters).
Cheers,
Marc
zelda_pinwheel 07-04-2008, 08:20 AM thanks marc. you tell the story so much better than i do. i mean, no-one likes talking about their own job, do they ?

Gods' underpants, no! Hell, if anyone finds out what I use to do for a crust, I'll have to kill them (likely by boring them to death with a detailed description).

Jerry, mate, you've, quite understandably, no idea of how amusingly redundant your protestation of geographic limitation is (and don't get me started on chronology).
Look, I'm sure others will fill you in. My Parties are so good, you just have to be (have been) there. When I say "have to", well...the others will explain.
Trust me, it's a good thing.
I think we might be due another Party. What say you all? I mean, the last was quite good for introductions, but really just "High Tea" on my scale of Party Fantabulosity.

Jelis 07-05-2008, 08:48 AM As a newcomer I most definitely must have given karma in the wrong places: one reads and reads on in a thread and then the impulse strikes you: XYZ deserves karma right then and there in that particular post, may be not that relevant to the whole of the idea or the advice or whatever.
I also gave karma without commenting, thinking most people did not want to read more messages than they have to.
Being new means also one reads many older posts, the poster might have forgotten he/she ever thought that thought!:)
I think :D :chinscratch: the solution would be that all of you karma and comment lovers/haters etc. add an abbreviation to your pseudo, something like KCL,KnoCL or KCH would do the trick. Some of those might look cool too.
Have a good weekend all,

honestly, i don't think there is a "wrong" place to give karma. really, just follow your impulsions.
I also gave karma without commenting, thinking most people did not want to read more messages than they have to.
this thread should, i imagine, have set you straight about that. but again, it's really up to your own discretion whether you want to comment or no.
Being new means also one reads many older posts, the poster might have forgotten he/she ever thought that thought!:)
the beauty of karma is, if you click the name of the thread the karma was given for, it takes you to the specific post rewarded. which is lucky, because i am frequently quite surprised to re-discover posts that i have apparently written only the day before.

well, i'm sure the there are plenty of people who are looking for any opportunity to amend obscure abbreviations to their signatures... it could turn out to be quite amusing.. however i predict that the only people interested in that will add "KCL" if i've interpreted your system correctly... so my advice to you is the same as before, just do whatever pleases you...
(we now return you to your regularly-scheduled digression.)

Excellent. I have placed a tentative trouser-leg of time in that vicinity, though it is not sewn-up, so can easily be retrofitted or futurofitted into the appropriate milieu.
and please do remember the guacamole and chocolate mole for those of us who consume no creepy-crawlies.
Of course, of course. You realise though that both species of mole put up such a fight and make such a mess under the tenderising mallet? It's no problem, of course, my Queen; I just like to keep my guests informed of their preferred menu choices at all stages of production.
I am already informed by my culinary consultant that the amuse bouche this time will have the most exquisite mouth feel, just so long as he can source enough properly-cleaned and de-nematocysted Irukandji.
i'll have started stocking up on tabasco sause for the afterwards hangover remedies.

Jelis, it is most important not to fret over such matters. You gave karma when you felt it deserved, and, in the end, it matters not the "how", but only that you sent a little positive thought someone's way.
As the Wisest One and High Priest of MR, Alexander Turic, himself said...
"Hey, you got some lovin', you gotta share it with the universe, man! It don' matter the laws; it just the cause, hon'child. Karma away 'til your spirit soars, sugar. Ain't nothin' wrong if it feels so right, baby"

*another particularity of marc's parties : only known instances of a möbius strip with "another" side.
Chocolate covered moles aren't creepy-crawlies?

sheesh, y'all, you'd think you never go to a restaurant. chocolate mole sauce (http://casualkitchen.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-to-make-mol-sauce-intense-exotic.html). please follow the vegetarian version.
slayda 07-06-2008, 05:07 PM I think this is why my brain hurts whenever I come here. Chronologos rhetorica should always be taken with a couple of aspirins. Is it the cause of so many members' migraines?

Now, now, I always pay my bills, which is why you never have to get your cash-stuffed, solid-gold, Svarovski crystal-encrusted money-clip out to shout for drinks when I taken you out on a night of "spirit-therapy".
It's my bar tab I never pay.

Oh, we all know what you were talking about. We just choose to ignore it and go for the rich, creamery centre.
Besides, I promise the moles will be stuffed to bursting with vegetables, so just eat around the mole.
(Someone should say "moleskin notebook" here, to try troll Taylor away from purported "more important stuff" to correct us)

Geoff, departure will occur at a time in which you were|are|will be available.
Should you have some pressing desire to not attend, it would behoove you to concentrate your explanations on succinctness and accuracy. My very busy preparations leave me in a somewhat limited capacity to explicate the convoluted impossibility of an apologist's RSVP. As I have previously indicated, receipt of an invitation is a certainty of attendance. No RSVP is required, as your attendance is predetermined. I am...confused, and it would concern me and wound my pride in being an exquisite host should I somehow muff my seating arrangements and inadvertently place you between Taylor and Adrian through attempting to resolve this apparent paradox.
I am of an understanding that a first experience of a Party of mine can be, for some individuals, a culturally shocking event. However, previous experience suggests that such a jolt displaces further anxiety on future attendance, and a familiar warmth and rhythm soon envelopes, and allows one to assist the acclimatisation of new Party Virgins. Should there be incidents from the earlier "High Tea" introductory Party that exasperated you, annoyed you, disturbed you, upset you, or tore you physically and metaphysically apart between the bloodied claws and jaws of a possibly-enraged fairy by the name of Mindy, I can assure you that further Rules have been enacted (eg. "DO NOT FRACK WITH THE FAIRY!"), and that I have made special note to myself to ensure that sufficient Zany Carters are imbibed by all guests to alleviate (future|)memory effects.
I realise that you do not specifically dislike either myself or my Parties, however, and as mentioned, having to refocus my prevailing distemperate attention onto a single, individually-created Refusal-Paradox at the typically-chaotic procurement and preparation stage, and away from organising the congenial seating geometries of the innumerable attendees expected at Yvan's Infinite Table, inevitably leads to odd, unexpected, negative fluctuations in the trouser-legs of time. It would cause me significant distress should a guest of mine, misplaced amidst my current, anxious choler, be inadvertently relocated during transfer arrangements into the kitchen larder and, more specifically, within the belly of a defrosting Oortwhale full of furious, re-invigorated Dark Energy Irukandji.
I do hope this can be satisfactorily resolved.
In your service,
High Gibbonate and Maître de Soirée
Marc (and Adrian...who is getting antsy and beginning to frown and flail)

slayda 07-07-2008, 03:39 PM Welcome back Taylor, we missed you or as ZP said somewhere else, "Tu me manques".:p
Sorry about the tense. I can copy & paste French but can't conjugate.
nrapallo 07-07-2008, 03:49 PM look at that, a new personal record : i now have an EIGHT line karma message. i didn't think it could be done. and it would have been longer, clearly, if tirsales hadn't run into the character limit, since the comment ends abruptly mid-sentence...
Yeah, that character limit really broke my sentence :(
I have this theory that, staying within the character limit (of perhaps 255 chars), I can get the most lines of karma comments. To date, we have had at most eight lines of comments (no 15 lines of all repeats isn't a comment!), but I think I can get NINE!
Let me try this theory out, and I'll report back here with the results. ZP get ready...

Yep, it worked. ZP now has a NINE line karma comment.
The "Theory" was to use a comment that caused the text to wrap at the end of the line, prematurely, so as to accomodate a long word. The karma comment was only 250 characters, so that could be the character limit on karma comments.
Thanks to ZP for all her assistance in finding these things out! (...Inquiring minds wanted to know...)
BTW, the karma comment was (without the line breaks):Interesting! Now I have this
Interesting! theory where I
Interesting! insert near the
Interesting! end of the line
Interesting! "Interesting!"
Interesting! which will cause
Interesting! the text to wrap
Interesting! around instead
of being hyphenated
Anyone going to try for TEN lines?

heh. the tense is correct. for a second i thought it really was something i said and i couldn't imagine why i would say that in french in the forum...
badgoodDeb 07-07-2008, 06:06 PM That's no twin...he's got muscles...
Yeah, they're twins -- didn't you see the flick about Ahhnold and Danny DeVito being twins? Same deal.
pshrynk 07-07-2008, 06:12 PM So... Taylor is a side effect?
badgoodDeb 07-07-2008, 06:27 PM Ummm ... I dunno. Is that what DeVito was in the movie? No, *I* didn't actually see it. :sheepish grin:

cheating ??? is that more or less scandalous than karma-swapping ? does it depend on how many lines you edit to ? so 248 would be *really* bad...

Nine lines!!!

RWood 07-07-2008, 10:00 PM It seems to me that the number of lines in karma also depends on the resolution of your monitor and the viewing skin you select. The higher the resolution, the more characters per line displayed (at a fixed size) thus reducing the karma line count. Likewise, the selection of "Liquid" as the skin will yield fewer lines than "Fixed" or "Mobi" Maybe this is just me and my crazy set-up.
vivaldirules 07-07-2008, 10:07 PM Nine lines!!!

I would think CID but then that could get confused with Criminal Investigation Division. And we wouldnt want that.
