I have a Sony PRS505 and the Cybook Gen 3 (as of Monday). The screen appears very similar on both but one is a SVGA and one is a Viziplex. Can anyone tell me the technical difference. The Sony has 8 greyscale - the Cybook only 4 - but they appear about the same.

Muy old PRS500 is 4 greyscale and it looks much worse than the 505 (IMHO)....So, I am thinking something else is making the difference.

There is no difference bewteen the screen on the 505 and the Cybook. Both devices use the same Vizplex screen.

SVGA just means 600x800 pixels. The screens on the PRS505 and Gen3 are both Vizplex (i.e. are identical). The difference is the controller, which gives 8 greyscales on the PRS505.

SVGA is also 800x600 the same resolution as the 6" Vizplex eink screen. The PRS-500 used the first generation eink screen which was slower and did not have as good a contrast. The PRS-505 uses a controller to drive the screen that supports 8 shades which will give better dithered photos then the Gen3 which uses a 4 shade controller.
