View Full Version : Cybook with standard html files
cozworth 06-25-2008, 02:31 PM Hello:
I have a Sony Prs505 and continuallly struggle with the Sony book site. The prices are higher than many other sites and it rattles my chains that I can't read those purchased books on any of my other devices.
I have many html books that I have had for years...so, I have to also keep my Nokia 770 on which I read the htmls in FBreader.
I am considering buying a Cybook because the product info claims to be able to read both Mobipocket and html.
So, basically Mobi for future purchases - and html for my current library.
I am really counting on the html working well.
Can anyone tell me what their experience has been?
Thanks, Coz
HarryT 06-25-2008, 02:34 PM No, HTML support is pretty basic. Improvements are promised for the next firmware release, but obviously nobody knows what that's going to be like.
It does, however, take literally seconds to convert HTML into MobiPocket format, and that works very well indeed.
igorsk 06-25-2008, 05:48 PM Calibre's html2lrf works pretty well too, and doesn't require new hardware :P
dordale 06-26-2008, 02:56 AM I agree with igorsk!
Coz--you should try Calibre. It'll convert your html files to Sony's lrf format very easily.
dordale :)
cozworth 06-26-2008, 03:31 PM Given that the sony screen is a little better I would love to. Is the Html2lrf available from sony or can I find it on the web somewhere? hhhmmmm...if it can batch convert that would be aaawwwweeesomme. Thanks.
wallcraft 06-26-2008, 03:43 PM See calibre e-book management (http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/). This used to be called libprs500.
cozworth 06-26-2008, 03:53 PM Might be time to get my eyes checked again...I see all kind of info about coversion tools but I don't actually see where I can download them. Also, I run windows vista 64 bit...I hope that is not a bad thing (again).
Can you tell me where in that link I need to look? Thanks, Coz
wallcraft 06-26-2008, 04:02 PM See the "Get calibre" link. However, it apparently does not work with 64-bit windows.
cozworth 06-26-2008, 05:49 PM Wow, that 64 bit, like a bad penny, keeps showing up! I have a few other computers at home that I tinker with. I may have to break down and put one of those back together. I will figure something out.
Thanks, coz

What doesn't work. 32-bit applications generally run fin on windows 64-bit.

You might also want to try iron python, which is a .Net implementation of python. Just get the source version rather than the pre-link 32bit EXEs from Kovid.

igorsk 06-26-2008, 07:30 PM I doubt Iron Python will work. As for 64-bit Windows, I beleive you can't use Calibre to upload files to the Reader (no libusb drivers for 64 bit) but the file conversion should work fine.
pilotbob 06-26-2008, 08:16 PM I doubt Iron Python will work.
Pray tell?

igorsk 06-26-2008, 08:46 PM IMO Calibre depends on too much low-level Python things (like Qt) for it to work in IronPython as-is.
kovidgoyal 06-26-2008, 09:53 PM in any case iron python is based on python 2.4. calibre needs python 2.5. And if you have a 505 all the features of calibre should work on 64 bit vista. There have been some reports of crashes, that I can't debug as I dont have a 64bit machine, so YMMV
cozworth 06-26-2008, 11:11 PM No, Calibre is crashing every time. For giggles I loaded another program that I think (canyou tell I am getting desperate) converts to LRF and it crashed too. I can only speculate as to the reason and would be willing to bet it has to do with the 64 bit...
Can anyone recall the exact reason I wanted the 64 bit version of Vista?
No? Me either! But I am sure it seemed like a good idea at the time.
This problem, along with the fact I have to use a "work around" just to have the Sony Library on my laptop, the Cybook is really starting to look good again.
Can anyone tell me if they have had problems reading html on the Cybook?
AND PLEASE let me know if you had any problems using it on a 64 bit Visata machine.
Many thanks! Coz
HarryT 06-27-2008, 03:40 AM Might be an idea to install "standard" 32-bit Vista or XP - they will happily "dual boot". I think personally that 64-bit Vista is not ready for "prime time" home use. Great for heavy duty "number crunching", but there are so many apps that have issues with it.
