Patricia 06-24-2008, 08:55 PM Yes, There's a family of them living somewhere nearby. And quite a few foxes live in the local cemetary, as do some rabbits. At various times in my garden there are squirrels, foxes, bats, hedgehogs, and, occasionally frogs (on their way to a neighbour's pond). And birds. And quite a few foxes live in the local cemetary, as do some rabbits. At various times in my garden there are squirrels, foxes, bats, hedgehogs, and, occasionally frogs (on their way to a neighbour's pond). And birds. ok, well we DO have bats !!! in fact, in the summer, if you go to the canal at dusk, first you can watch the swallows acrobating in the sky, and then as it gets darker there is an imperceptible transition, and the arcs get more erratic, the shadows are a little more jagged, and then you realize it's not swallows anymore... we have squirrels as well, and plenty of birds (apart from the pigeons, there are sparrows, and ducks, and sometimes (rather bizarrely) seagulls, and some others whose names i don't know. I have friends in south London who also have loads of foxes. They are quite common in cities now. Bristol has several colonies which have featured in television documentaries. Perhaps there are fewer in Paris because of the peripherique? yes, that seems likely. i wish we did have foxes here... they're so beautiful. although actually i don't really like seeing animals in cities, they always seem out of place and sad. so i guess i *don't* really wish we had foxes here. but in the suburbs would be all right, where there are more gardens and fewer cars... i saw a hedgehog last summer in the country in the south ; we were out on the terrasse behind the house after dinner, and we heard a rustling, and turned our heads expecting to see the neighbor's cat again, but instead a strange pointy nose came out of the leaves, and then a little prickly head... we all stared at each other for a few seconds, and then he decided to take a different route and went back into the garden. it was the highlight of my evening (and it had been a pretty good evening up to that point, already). well, although it may seem like it sometimes, unlike some animals zeldas are not nocturnal so i really must go to bed now. montsnmags 06-24-2008, 09:06 PM Currently I am listening to the Loved One print something upstairs, what sounds like a garden blower-vac in the distance, some Noisy Miners having little territorial stoushes, and a couple of rainbow lorikeets discussing the morning news ("I see the price of nectar's gone up again..."). DMcCunney 06-25-2008, 09:21 PM Chrysalis - Definition Back in the late 60's, San Francisco band like the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead were highly popular. MGM Records tried to duplicate the phenomenon by mining a different territory, and producing a series of albums from Boston based bands they labeled the "Bosstown Sound". Chrysalis was one release. Definition was their only album, and it became a cult favorite. It's been on my top ten albums list from when I first heard it. The sound is psychedelic. Leader J. Spider Barbour was a grad student in entomology, and the songs are full of odd insect references, like the mayfly, cleaning wings singed by a candle flame, becoming a metaphor for the singer's failed romance. And for just outright weird, "Dr. Root's Garden", in which kids play outside his house, while inside, Dr. Root breeds bottles of disease to loose upon the world he thinks has wronged him. Spider is still around, a biologist living in upstate NY, who also plays with a local band called the Curmudgeons. http://www.ulster.net/~spider/ The Rev-Ola (http://www.revola.co.uk/) specialty label in the UK re-released Definition on CD with bonus tracks , but this is the original vinyl. My favorite FM "underground" station was the sister station of the top black top-40 station in the city. The AM station played Motown. The FM station played the Grateful Dead. The overnight DJ on the FM station was the son of the (white) station owner. The top white top-forty AM station also had an FM underground rock sibling. That was an automated tape loop operation. Song, song, song, FCC mandated station ID break, song... but no announcer to tell you what it was they were playing. They had some amazing music, and moments of extreme frustration. "Wow! (It was later remade by the Rolling Stones.) hehe, i looked it up on youtube... the only version of that song i knew is the one by the Grateful Dead (my dad loves them, they were the soundtrack to most of my childhood). i didn't even know that it was a Buddy Holly song originally, or that the Stones covered it later... clearly my musical culture has some large holes in it. The top white top-forty AM station also had an FM underground rock sibling. That was an automated tape loop operation. Song, song, song, FCC mandated station ID break, song... but no announcer to tell you what it was they were playing. They had some amazing music, and moments of extreme frustration. "Wow! That's great! What it it? I want to buy the album! What is it? Arrgghhhh!" :p oh, that would have driven me completely crazy. before the days of online playlists i used to make lists of songs i heard on the radio that i wanted identified : "14h17, something something lalala petite fleur lalala... 14h23, lala baby baby lalala..." and then call the radio station. the one i listened to the most was Radio Nova (http://www.novaplanet.com/) (listen online !) and since (at the time, anyway) they were a smallish operation it was always the same guy who answered the phone (he was an intern, so he got all the crappy jobs). i drove him nuts because i would make him look up dozens of songs at a time, and he was occasionally quite rude to me, but since i took it as a joke and was quite sassy back to him we eventually became friends and would go out for drinks. i like to think that it's (at least partially) thanks to me that the site has the "what was that song ???" feature ("c'était quoi ce titre ?") which allows you to search the archives. (you're welcome.) Elsi 07-03-2008, 05:19 PM 16:18 CDT -- History Channel show "The Universe", Episode "The Biggest Things in the Universe", Tivo replay started by hubby. DMcCunney 07-03-2008, 05:26 PM oh, yes, i am an enthusiastic (if not unconditional) motown fan. that is to say that i like some of it very much, and some of it i can take or leave. but when i'm in the mood for that, i really don't want to listen to much else. Motown produced great music, but got brickbats for business practices. Founder/CEO Berry Gordy ruled with an iron hand, and brooked no dissent. Temptations lead singer David Ruffin wanted to leave the group and go solo. Gordy disagreed. Ruffin's solo career was largely torpedoed by Gordy for disobeying him. Stevie wonder once expressed frustration, after attending a meeting of Motown execs and presenting the material for his new album. They heard "Superstition", and weren't interested in anything else. That was the killer top 40 radio track, and that was all they cared about. Wonder was trying to produce an entire album, but they were firmly rooted in the single as the product. Some of the Motown session guys have popped up lately touring as a group. They played on many hit Motown records, as largely anonymous session men. They didn't get rich, since they didn't get royalties and made standard union session fees, but there was a lot of work, and many got houses and boats from the income they made as session players. It's nice to see them step into the spotlight under their own names, and I think they've gotten more than a few comments at gigs along the lines of "Oh, yeah! You're the one who played that great popping bass line on that Temp's cut! I learned how to play bass because I wanted to play like that! hehe, i looked it up on youtube... the only version of that song i knew is the one by the Grateful Dead (my dad loves them, they were the soundtrack to most of my childhood). i didn't even know that it was a Buddy Holly song originally, or that the Stones covered it later... clearly my musical culture has some large holes in it. I credit rock with greatly expanding mine. I paid attention when rock bands began playing blues, country and jazz tunes, and said "Hmmmm. Let's go pick up albums by the guys these guys listened to when they were learning to play." 1,500 albums later... oh, that would have driven me completely crazy. before the days of online playlists i used to make lists of songs i heard on the radio that i wanted identified : "14h17, something something lalala petite fleur lalala... With this new house, from the flotsam and jetsam of the infants of passing tenants, I have developed a predilection for the naming and placing of the discarded and once-lost toys. Thus, there is Spidey, and Miow-miow, and Lady G-G, and Ronald, and then there's Pog...the Amazing Pog...oh, the stories Pog The Incontinent Adventurer can tell! Anyway, Pog is a cute, yellow, squeeze-toy hedgehog, about the size of a cricket ball. I initially found him near the water meter out in the front garden, and so naturally found him a hidey-hole from the ravages of a hedgehog-intolerant society within the meter box. Well, Pog liked his little hollow for some time, until the other day I found him 20 metres down the hill on the road. I suspect that if Pog wouldn't come to the Mountain of Intolerance, then the Mountain of Intolerance came to him in the form of the Meter Man. I don't know how it went down, but I suspect The Man's easy, autopilot meter-checking was suddenly kicked into shock upon lifting the cover, and expressed itself in "WHAT THE #$%^ IS THAT? AGGH, ^&*!ING KIDS!" and a forehand scoop (or backhand, if lefthanded) down into potential obliteration upon the road, crushed, like just another one of us oppressed species. ...but he has been saved, and sits now in a little hollow at the base of a clump of bamboo palms by the pool, eye to the pool-bar, the water and mostly the sky, dreaming of a world without hedgehog- and gibbon-oppression. Incidentally, the water is back on, and I'm on a second go through The Whole Story, currently listening to Hounds of Love. Can we still be friends even tho our music tastes are 'different'? :D ABBA wrote carefully crafted pop songs. Not everyone cares for them, but they were masters at what they did. They were also a source of divided feelings in their native Sweden. On the one hand, they were international superstars, popular around the world, and selling millions of records. Swedes were proud of them. On the other hand, they were multimillionaires because of their success. Sweden is a rather ruthlessly egalitarian society, and no Swede is supposed to be significantly better off than another. There was a fair bit of resentment of their wealth, though it isn't clear what they are supposed to have done instead. ______ Dennis pshrynk 07-29-2008, 01:54 PM It's probably an urban myth, but i once heard that they were int he 105% tax bracket in Sweden. They would certainly be in the highest bracket. I have a acquaintance in NYC who was born in Ireland, worked in Scandinavia, and emigrated to the US. He explained his move as financial - taxation was best described as predatory in Sweden, and he couldn't make any money. A Swedish woman I knew a while back described working there. "Once I have passed the probationary period, and I am in the union, you can't touch me!" I asked what the incentive was for anyone to actually work hard and produce, since there was no direct incentive to do so, and no penalty for not doing so, and was told "We work because we are good Swedes, and that's what good Swedes do." I suppose it works for them. ______ Dennis LazyScot 07-29-2008, 02:17 PM So take THAT, lazyscot! :D :smack: And I would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for you meddling sparrows.... Sparrow 1 - LazyScot 0 zelda_pinwheel 07-29-2008, 03:08 PM Nothing. You've been naught but kind. Perhaps its an age thing, but I do love ABBA. Listening to their songs makes me happy and dance around the house. Not a pretty sight, really, since I can't dance, but at least it gets me moving! Can we still be friends even tho our music tastes are 'different'? :D heum... do you promise NEVER to make me listen to ABBA ??? It's probably an urban myth, but i once heard that they were int he 105% tax bracket in Sweden. Snopes is quiet on the subject. those aren't taxes : they are fines. for subjecting the world to severe mental anguish. ABBA wrote carefully crafted pop songs. Not everyone cares for them, but they were masters at what they did. some torturers are masters of their craft as well. i don't like them either. to be fair, it's not just abba. disco in general makes my skin crawl. after about 6 nanoseconds i start to feel nauseated and after 8 nanoseconds i usually begin to have a grand mal seizure. also, history has demonstrated time and again that nothing good can come of any musical endeavor that gets its start by winning a television contest. *especially* eurovision. Sparrow 07-29-2008, 03:16 PM You have my sympathies; not many things worse than listening to music you don't like filtered through apartment walls. For me, it was the psychological torment of never knowing when it would stop; and it being an intrusion of my private space  - it's a pretty miserable experience. also, history has demonstrated time and again that nothing good can come of any musical endeavor that gets its start by winning a television contest. *especially* eurovision. Not a competition entrant - but Riverdance came out of Eurovision; surely that makes it all worth while :). zelda_pinwheel 07-29-2008, 03:35 PM You have my sympathies; not many things worse than listening to music you don't like filtered through apartment walls. (and i do mean "something terrible" in this case). Not a competition entrant - but Riverdance came out of Eurovision; surely that makes it all worth while :). if you say so... have not actually seen riverdance, so am unequipped to answer, although i tend to be skeptic (...eurovision != something good...). pshrynk 07-29-2008, 03:40 PM Sorry, Sparrow, Riverdance resembles Irish clogging like American diplomacy resembles responsible international correspondence.
