View Full Version : Wanna Free Ebook? Our MR Uploaders!
vivaldirules 06-17-2008, 03:09 PM Okay, this is probably in the wrong place - I'm not asking for help. But after a tiny frustration in trying to conveniently find all the people who have taken the time and effort to upload ebooks and list them in a convenient way, I've manually compiled the list so we could all see who these 99 fine people are (not just the top 5 posters) and what they've done. If I have made a mistake and left someone out or miscounted, my apologies to you.
Thanks to all of you! And please make more!! :thanks::iloveyou:
What?! You haven't contributed yet? No time like the present to start.
vivaldirules 06-17-2008, 05:13 PM Sorry, here it is as an RTF file, too. By the way, you knew that our five top uploaders are Patricia, RWood, Madam Broshkina, HarryT, and Dr. Drib. But did you know that the next five top uploaders are Nate the great, JSWolf, Stanart, BenG, and nrapallo each of whom have posted over 100 books? Half of our uploaders have posted only one or two books but these include many books that have been downloaded hundreds of times each.
zelda_pinwheel 06-17-2008, 05:33 PM what a nice thing to do, vr. all uploaders should be appreciated.
and i'm not just saying that because i've contributed 14 books (fourteen ! yep, all that. count'em. you're impressed now, aren't you. hopefully 15 soon.).
nrapallo 06-17-2008, 06:34 PM Sorry, here it is as an RTF file, too. By the way, you knew that our five top uploaders are Patricia, RWood, Madam Broshkina, HarryT, and Dr. Drib. Thanks for your compilation skills and hard work creating this list!

BTW can you compile this list by the (sum of the) most downloaded by uploader? i.e. the downloaded sum total of all ebooks posted by uploader.

you don't ask for much do you... :D actually though, more seriously, wouldn't that be really difficult and possibly pointless, since those numbers must change every minute or so ?

Actually, you can't see a list by the number of downloads, can you? Only by the number of times the posts have been opened. To see the number of downloads, you'd have to open all 5000+ posts individually.

yes, i think that's right. that's what i meant when i said it would be really difficult.

OK request withdrawn, unless the moderators have access to this info and can produce a listing!
vivaldirules 06-18-2008, 02:07 PM In case you're curious, we've averaged over 15 new ebooks per day at MobileRead since last fall. That compares with about 100 new ebooks per day at Sony and about 190 at Amazon for the Kindle. But ours are FREE (and legal) and hand-made by volunteers. Just in case you're curious.
DixieGal 06-18-2008, 02:30 PM I'm getting my nerve up to try to do one. It's sort of intimidating.
vivaldirules 06-18-2008, 02:36 PM Relax, DixieGal. It's as easy or as hard as you want to make it. If you download a text from Gutenberg and just strip our the legaleze at the beginning and end, it can take as little as 5 minutes once you've set up the tool you want to use. If you add a nice Table of Contents or illustrations or fix some formatting issues, it can take longer. I've spent up to 8 hours on one but that's only because I had the time to spend and felt that it would be useful to do so and I rather enjoyed doing it, too. Usually, it's an hour or two for me. Don't do more than you want to because it's always possible to turn an effort into a chore that's unpleasant.
vivaldirules 06-18-2008, 04:03 PM Which are the most popular titles in our ebook section? I don't know but here are several that have been downloaded more than 400 times each. There may be others. There are very many that have been downloaded 100 times or more.

Looking at the E-books forum topics sorted by date gives you some interesting insights.
the oldest topic threads (and presumably the earliest uploads) are these:
Calender 2007 for Sony Reader - LRF -MMascaro - 11-12-2006
Bible: World English Version - LRF - elf - 11-17-2006
Conan Doyle, Sir Arthur: Complete Sherlock Holmes. - LRF - HarryT - 03-27-2007
there are 434 topic threads (therefore 434 books) containing Sony format books before the earliest MobiPocket books show up
the earliest MobiPocket thread is:
Harvard Classics, Volume 16: Stories from the 1001 Nights - PRC - RWood - 06-22-2007
the earliest IMP thread is:
Lie & Bos, Hakon and Bert:Cascading Style Sheets, level 1. - IMP - DaleDe - 09-04-2007
only 1375 of the 5306 threads are missing the genre attribute
I'm a family genealogist. I like personal and community history. I like archives. Much of what has happened at MobileRead occurred long before I arrived in January 2008. It would be interesting to have a thread that summarizes significant events/threads in the history of MobileRead with links where possible. And since significant is in the eyes of the beholder, here are some suggestions on topics I would search out:
The very first post in the forum
The very first file uploaded
Introduction threads of people who have since assumed some leadership roles
The first hijacked thread

that could be a very interesting thread ! and i imagine it would interest novices as well as nostalgic veterans.
maybe you could start the thread, with whatever significant events you've discovered (the info on uploaded files is a good start, i think), and then people could add to it with other significant events. like the milestones thread, but for the site itself rather than individual members, and (somewhat, at least) retrospective.

Ooh I like where this is going! It would be a biography of mobileread.com (or is it an autobiography if the members here write it?).
A timeline of the site's milestones. I'm a relative new-comer (joined the day after zelda_pinwheel!) so I would only have insights into the past 6 months or so.
As one thread this can get unwieldy. To do this in chronological order would be impossible, so I would propose a discussion/thoughts thread and then the actual biography write-up in ebook format or a new thread that could be edited to ensure it remained linear.
Any volunteers? long-time members? moderators?
EDIT: No wait! Stop the presses! This is great stuff for a community-contributed MR wiki entry. Who's that wiki-guy again .... oh yeah, Dale, any suggestions?
SUGGESTION: This wiki MobileRead has already been started and has a History section! It is seriously lacking, though! ;)
vivaldirules 06-18-2008, 09:47 PM The first hijacked thread
What?! We don't hijack no steeenking threads in this here town! Whodaya think we are, a bunch of undisciplined train-wreck-of-a-forum horse thieves? Okay, who's up for a game of pinochle?

vivaldi ftw !!! :p
vivaldirules 06-29-2008, 12:59 PM Ebook uploads to MobileRead.
zelda_pinwheel 06-29-2008, 01:01 PM wow. "impressive" is too weak a word.
vivaldirules 06-29-2008, 01:23 PM I can't help mentioning, again, that without the terrific help from Patricia, RWood, HarryT, Madam Broshkina, and Dr. Drib, there would be only 1339 books ebooks in the library today instead of the 5391 we currently have. And, of course, we really wouldn't have anywhere close to even that many since few of us would have the knowledge, tools, help, or motivation to make any at all without them and the others who have been so helpful.
vivaldirules 08-30-2008, 12:14 PM I see we've hit 5900 ebooks in our library today and have added over 500 in the last two months with a notable flurry in the past few days or so. We're likely to reach 6000 very soon. Some really interesting titles, too. Thank you MR Uploaders!
Falbe Publishing 08-30-2008, 02:40 PM Hi Vivaldirules,
It's great you did this work, but I'm not on the list. Here's the link to the thread where I uploaded my novel a few weeks ago.
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27191
Thanks.

Your novel is on our list of uploaded books, Tracy. In both the LRF and mobi versions. We wouldn't want to miss it out, particularly when forum members have been saying how good it is.
Go to the the upload secion and do a search on your surname. Or go to F, then click on 'author' and it sorts into alphabetical order.

I think Tracy was trying to say that the .rar and .rtf files in the first posts in this thread are several months out of date and her name doesn't appear in them.
Patricia 08-30-2008, 09:38 PM Ah, yes. My mistake. Sorry about that.
Falbe Publishing 08-31-2008, 01:11 AM It was the .rtf file I looked at the top of the thread and did not see my name. I thought that was the list being discussed, and I just did not want to be missed. I'm a squeaky wheel I know.
RWood 08-31-2008, 01:56 AM All we have to do is to get VR to redo all of the work he did again. His list is a snapshot of the upload library as it was when he gathered his data and that was before the date of the post. Now if he has the time ....

"...all the work he did again." Right. A couple of hours. How many hours have you spent making ebook for us, Good Master RWood? Or should I say, how many hundreds of hours? Over a thousand, aren't you? You're a hard working dog and I appreciate that very much, sir.
Yes, I'll update the list again. But I'll wait until I have the time to blow (having blown a couple of hours yesterday on the Sony vs. Amazon comparison I posted). Failing that, someone else around here (some curious but very thoughtful lurker perhaps?) could just as easily download the list I created in June and update it by adding all the entries since then. But that's just a thought I had. Anyway.....
vivaldirules 09-05-2008, 11:30 AM As of today, there are over 6000 ebooks in our library! Thank you, MR uploaders! I appreciate everyone's persistent hard work. It's a great resource. I noted some particularly great titles have been added recently. Well, they're all great titles. Except for that one on cheese, of course. :winkies:
HarryT 09-05-2008, 02:17 PM How dare you insult "The Complete Book of Cheese" - it's a classic!
:D
RWood 09-05-2008, 02:19 PM VR favors books about or made from bacon. :D
And I savored every page of The Complete Book of Cheese.
Dr. Drib 09-05-2008, 02:42 PM Thanks for the announcement, vivaldirules. :) This is great news.
....of course, we contributors have only just begun. :)
So: What will be the exact date for 7,000? Maybe the winner could win that perennial favorite: The Complete Book of Cheese

vivaldirules 10-31-2008, 03:50 PM I see that Patricia is just 20 uploads short of 2000. It boggles my wee mind. And her continual desire to fulfill all requests (e.g., pshwynk's 1001 Nights that must've taken forever) is inspiring. I've been racking my brains thinking of ways we could thank her (besides just thanking her and raising a Zany Carter Patricia in her name). Suggestions are welcome. By the way, the rest of the heavy hitters are also deserving but Patricia's efforts just seem exceptional.
JSWolf 10-31-2008, 03:54 PM You could thank Patricia by getting her a PRS-505. The way to do that is get me a PRS-700 and I'll give her my PRS-505. Sounds like a deal to me.

i agree, patricia deserves something special to thank her for all her work. somehow, just buying her a drink when she next comes to paris doesn't seem sufficient.

Self serving and generous. I love it! ;)

Well, I did put her on the ticket as VP. That gives here a straight line shot to stealing the election for herself after I'm done pillaging the Treasury.:p
I certainly do appreciate the One Thousand Nights and a Night, as well.
Patricia 10-31-2008, 08:17 PM You are all just too kind. I really do enjoy making books. I'm only glad that some people like reading them, so that I'm not unnecessarily cluttering up the bandwidth.
I have been thinking of updating my PRS500, but can't make up my mind whether to get a 505 or import a 700. I may wait until after Christmas to see whether the prices drop in the January sales.
vivaldirules 11-05-2008, 08:43 PM Thank you, Patricia. As a token of our appreciation, may we (ahem) offer you an autographed copy of marc's first novel "A High Gibbonate's High Adventures"? It's a real trip, I'm sure. Or how about one of Steve's next navel? Novel! I meant novel! Wait, we'll think of something.
Really, thank you so much. You're a real gem.

now that is just incredibly generous of you, Dr. Drib !! thank you !! i'm sure she'll appreciate that deeply. i know i will, because we always have tea together when she comes ("twice" counts as "always", right ? if it's two out of the last two times she's been here ?), and i enjoy her company. plus she brings me hobnobs (mmm, hobnobs !). no, really, i'm touched on her behalf, and in anticipation. very sweet of you !
vivaldirules 11-29-2008, 11:35 AM Activity at the MR library, in the form of new deposits, has been rather brisk lately with over 400 new uploads so far this month. Yesterday alone there were 26 uploads of 12 different titles. Thank you, MR uploaders!
Jellby 11-29-2008, 11:38 AM And there are more to come, I will upload more Wodehouse today or tomorrow :D
mtravellerh 12-15-2008, 01:54 AM Between Patricia, crutledge and myself we have over 400 books uploaded in one month. Of course, as we all handle 3 formats, this reduces the real number somewhat, but we are around 130-150 new book titles per month between us 3, not to mention all the other ebook uploaders.
That's more than any other portal for free e-books, including manybooks and the mighty PG itself.
I thought this was worth mentioning. Kudos to Charlie and Patricia!
