An omnibus edition of the first four books in the "Bulldog Drummond" series, written by "Sapper", a pseudonym of Herman Cyril McNeale (1888-1937).
The stories follow the adventures of Captain Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond, D.S.O., M.C., a wealthy former WWI officer of the Loamshire Regiment, who, after the war, spends his new-found leisure time as a private detective.
Drummond is a proto-James Bond figure and a crudely debased version of the imperial adventurers depicted by the likes of John Buchan and Rider Haggard. In terms of the detective genre, the first Bulldog Drummond novel was published after the Sherlock Holmes stories, the Nayland Smith/Fu Manchu novels and Richard Hannay's first three adventures including The Thirty Nine Steps. The character first appeared in the novel Bulldog Drummond (1920), and this was followed by a lengthy series of books and adaptations for films, radio and television.
The books in this volume are:
Bulldog Drummond (1920)
The Black Gang (1922)
The Third Round (1924)
The Final Count (1926)
The four books form a unified whole, describing Drummond's fight against the "master criminal" Carl Peterson.
Note that many parts of these books are rather crudely racist and anti-semitic by modern standards; they must be read as a product of their own times.
EDIT: 1 Sep 2008
Added the previously-missing third book in the series, The Third Round. Removed The Female of the Species to a separate volume. These four books are now a logical unit, describing as they do Drummond's fight against Carl Peterson. Uploaded v2.
