Edith Wharton (1862-1937)
French Ways and Their Meaning (1919).

The novelist Edith Wharton was living in France when the First World War broke out. As well as doing war work, she thought it would be a good idea to explain French customs to the Americans who were fighting in France, so as to avoid misunderstandings. Hence this short book, which originated as a series of essays.

Learn how French and American women differ; why the French won’t eat blackberries and the Americans are scared of wild mushrooms. Differing attitudes to business and artistic taste are also discussed.

There are times I think the French are more different than the rich.

Viva La difference!

And personally, wild mushrooms do scare me a bit. You never know what kind of ride you are gonna get.

Thanks, Patricia!
