View Full Version : Okay, it's charging...now what?
GypsyWoman 05-30-2008, 11:09 AM Hello everyone!!
My Sony Reader just arrived.:) Yippee!! It's beautiful!!
I plugged it into my laptop and it's now charging.
What happens next?
How long does it take to charge?
When can I start shopping for ebooks?
When do I load the software?
I got questions:p!
:thanks:
cassidym 05-30-2008, 11:35 AM Hi GypsyWoman. If you're using the USB cable to charge the Sony, it takes about four hours for a full charge although you can start downloading books sooner that that. In fact, you can download books to your Reader Library on your PC now as long as you've loaded your software then transfer them to your Sony Reader after it's charged up. I seem to recall I charged mine up for about two hours before I started transferring books over.
If you don't have one, you might consider getting the AC adapter plug. This will charge your reader up to teh max in about two hours and you can read books while you're doing it.
slayda 05-30-2008, 11:36 AM You can load the software now & start shopping. With the SW loaded on your laptop, you can actually start reading on it if you just can't wait for the Sony to charge.
It's been a long while since I initially charged my Sony so I won't go there. But when it's charged you can use the Sony SW to transfer books to the reader.;)

Hi,
I did order an AC adapter but it's not here yet, it's 'out for delivery' right now. SO I have to rely on the laptop to charge it.
I didn't load the software yet. I guess I can do that now.
Thanks for the info!
Have a good one!:)
Mr. Goodbar 05-30-2008, 11:45 AM Also, don't forget to check the content here on the forums. There is a great collection of classics available. Using Calibre will also give you the ability to download great news content such as The New York Times and other papers/periodicals. The NYT is a full edition of the daily paper.
P.S. Where in PA are you located? I grew up in Pennsylvania and still have family there.

Hi,
Oh good, I can't wait to shopping for some ebooks. I'll load my software now so I can buy a few ebooks now.
Where does everyone usually buy their books? Sony or other on-line site?
Thanks for the help, I sure can use it.
Take care!
Ervserver 05-30-2008, 11:54 AM Hello GypsyWoman, I've yet to buy a book for my 505. So many good free books here and elsewhere.
cassidym 05-30-2008, 12:27 PM GypsyWoman, I buy most of my books from Sony although have also bought several from Fictionwise (http://www.fictionwise.com/servlet/mw;jsessionid=Y+YAiU77eZnvglr2OVySPYNDHhc?a=rewrit e&url=/home.html)
Also, go here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11052) for a list of Sony compatible books beyond the Sony site.

Hi,
I started looking around and found a few free books here this morning. I have never heard of some of them so I looked them up on Amazon for a description before I downloaded them to my laptop.
There really is quite a lot here.:)

I see I have a lot of browsing to do. At least it's fun browsing and not work related browsing, lol!
pilotbob 05-30-2008, 01:15 PM Where does everyone usually buy their books? Sony or other on-line site?
I haven't bought any books from Sony. Actually the only thing I've bought from that store is 3 gift cards for non-US members here.
That said, most all of the books I bought from sony I got from scifi-az.com. He has Sony formated PDFs... and I've been working with Michael the last few days via email to make sure he supports Kindle and has native BBeB (lrf) for Sony readers. If you like SciFi check out his books. I have read the first two Gibraltar Stars series books, the Makers series and the Antaries series.
I also have an account at Fictionwise.com... I didn't buy one book there. All there "multiformat" books have an .lrf for Sony that you can get. But, if you buy protected books your best bet is to get the MS Reader format and remove DRM and convert... but that does take some software installs and work. not hard, just stuff to do.
But, if you find stuff at the Sony store that you want to read and the price isn't much higher than fictionwise or other places....

Whew!! I can see I have a lot to learn:eek:, wow:blink:! Maybe I'll stick with loading BBeB for a while:o.
I like SciFi a lot. My favorites are horror and mystery.
I think I'll start keeping notes until I get the hang of this thing.

I can recommend Cory Doctorow's _Little Brother_. It is one of his newest books, but he released it under the Creative Commons license so it is in the eBook section here at mobilread in Sony/LRF format. I am only a chapter in and I can tell it's going to be a good one.
Actually, here is a link to it:

If you like SciFi just visit www.baen.com and check their free library. Beside BBeB you can also use rtf files. That is what I personally use.
You should also visit our wiki (link is on the top of this page) and check other sources of free and paid e-books.

I have been informed of the wiki link already. You guys are extremely helpful on this forum. This is great!

Hey, great web site.
We are big Harry Turtledove fans in our house. I personally like Robert Heinlein and Frederik Pohl.
I grew up on Edgar Rice Burroughs (not Tarzan stories:rolleyes:).
Thanks again for the link!
cassidym 05-30-2008, 05:15 PM Go to the Baen web site for lots of free SciFi (http://www.baen.com/library/). I just downloaded 1632 for free.

Here's the wiki link for the software. It's a library application, but will also download news and convert books from other formats to the Sony format.

Lucky you, Atlanta is so much nicer than Pittsburgh, lol. Our weather is the worst, lol.

Ervserver 05-30-2008, 11:33 PM This is e-book heaven :bookworm:
Hello, Gyps.
Some simple tricks.
1.-Manage your books with Calibre. It will let you convert almost anything (html, rtf, txt, pdf...) into LRF, which is the Readers file type (BBeB). LRF is more compact than RTF and allows you to customize font type, cover, margins, header...
2.-Use the Sony Ebook library software to transfer them to the Reader. When you transfer them with Calibre, the Reader has to process the book the 1st time you open it and it can take up to 10 minutes (depending on the book size, more or less than that). Sony's library will process the book on the PC before transferring, which is so much faster. This is the only reason to use the library (my opinion), apart from buying from connect (which I wouldn't even if I could).
3.-Spend some time defining the font type, size and margins you like better. Do this with the readers "s" font size (default) and you will not have to fumble with that, ever. Many people like Times New Roman, I use Futura (size 11 in rtf, base size 12 in Calibre) all the time. But that is my personal choice. You need to find yours. What I did was make a test rtf with the same paragraph in different sizes, convert it to lrf and define the one I wanted. Pick your font type in your PC because you will possibly need to embed it when you convert it to lrf with Calibre (peace of cake).
4.- You should know that using an SD card full of books depletes the battery faster than an empty one or none. If you have a need to take 2 Gb of books with you (I don't) take the SD card with you, but not inside the Reader.
5.- You might be interested in getting a second brand PSP charger from ebay or similar, that will let you a.- charge your reader away from your PC. b.- Charge it in 1,5 hours instead of 4. c.-Read while you charge. It costs about $12, shipping included. Check the forum's utilities section.
This is mine. I got it in Spain, but this very same one is all over the place on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380030836186
6.-Depending on where and when you read, you might need a light. This is mine. A little more blueish than I would like, but otherwise, perfect.
http://cgi.ebay.es/Mighty-Bright-Xtr...742.m153.l1262
7.-You should check Wolf's Hack. It will provide your Reader with a clock, unified fonts and simple shut off. It has been tested. I love it. Thanks again Wolf.
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23143
8.-Know that Calibre is the outcome of Covid's continuous effort and skills. He sure deserves a first row seat in the e-reader's Olympus.
9.- There is no single way to do anything here. If you find a better, or just different way to accomplish whatever, post it!!
Mmmmmmm... that's about it for the moment.
Damn!! I almost forgot!!
10.- Try Beowulf's "Bookit" plugin. It will convert any web page (and the link levels you choose) into an RLF and add it to your Calibre library. This plugin is so fresh that it still wriggles.

Lots of good stuff here. You are a heck of a guy to share all of this with me.

Yes, there is a lotof good stuff here. My recommendation is to explore this site for a while. (69 posts in less than 2 days! ) Pretty much everything you ask about has been covered in more detail, so you will get more info by browsing existing info than by posting dozens of small questions. The top of the page has the major sub-forums well-labeled, including ones for content (direct book downloads as well as linksto other sources that you asked about), software/format conversions, accessories, troubleshooting, etc. And there's a wiki as well for the basic information you want.
BTW, Sony's ebook store has lots of Turtledove books, many in bundles.

If there is problem posting 69 posts in 2 days, please let me know. I was trying to get a feel for using a forum.

i'm sure Dr. Moze didn't intend to make you feel unwelcome at all, however since you are new you might want to look around and see what others have already posted ; there is a good chance that a lot of your questions have already been answered. you can also use the search function to help you find information. since you say you are new to forums, you might not realize that.

One of the challenge of forums is the lack of any of the non-written/verbal parts of communication. Something that was meant as positive advice can come off feeling negative at times. Also, when you have many people with different first languages some of the subtlety can get lost between the chair and the keyboard. Don't sweat it and keep posting. The search function can be a big help, but it can also be a challenge if you don't know the best keywords to use. Never hesitate to post. You'll get a feel for what to search and what to post over time.
I typically read here way more than I post just due to time constraints, but I have found the people who frequent this board to be very helpful and accommodating. Even the occasional disagreement is reconciled positively. Maybe the nature of the topic tends to bring a more mature audience, but it is exponentially more friendly than most internet forums. Welcome and enjoy. I hope you will continue posting.
cassidym 06-01-2008, 01:11 PM Mr. Goodbar is absolutely right. You post all you want. There are plenty of good-natured members here and someone will always be pleased to point you in the right direction.
And do not worry about the number of posts. To most, members, it's a thing of pride how many posts you have. In fact, it annoys me that damn zelda_pinwheel has more posts than me even though she joined the forum after I did. Doesn't help her's are more interesting and informative than mine either. Shoot.
Better avatar too but that's a whole other story.
Enjoy the forum and post away!
zelda_pinwheel 06-01-2008, 01:14 PM ah, but cassidym makes up for it by being so friendly and good-natured.

I agree. I don't take remarks by other personally. Sometimes, my posts don't come the way I intended it to be. It is hard to convey thoughts when you can only type so fast.
Overall, this is a good/informative forum to be. In other nastier forums, I don't bother visiting them further

is it working ?
MidknytOwl 06-05-2008, 10:58 AM You know, I think it did. It fully charged in less than two hours via the USB. I must have magical Sony powers. :)
I love it. So tiny. Words so clear. A little heavier than I was expecting, but not that heavy.
Now my roommates want one. ;)
zelda_pinwheel 06-05-2008, 11:01 AM magical sony powers, that's going to come in handy. you should convince your roommates to each get a different brand, then you would have *all* the different ones to play with
maybe it's time to update your profile, on the left there, where it says "device : None :("
MidknytOwl 06-05-2008, 11:03 AM So it does. Not anymore. Thanks for reminding me. :)
cassidym 06-05-2008, 11:27 AM How many books have you loaded on it?
MidknytOwl 06-05-2008, 03:25 PM So far? Only about five. I had a final today, a paper due tomorrow, and another final on Saturday, so I'm trying really, really hard not to play with it. Even though it keeps staring at me. :anxious:
I loaded a couple of the 100 classics I got from Sony and then two Lit ones I bought at Books on Board and then I converted to see if they worked...and they did. They even have the cover art.
Best graduation gift to myself ever. ;)
.... I'm trying really, really hard not to play with it. Even though it keeps staring at me. :anxious: ....
And so it begins... Oh that's one thing this group forgot to mention. These eReaders(generic term) are extremely addictive.
I loaded a couple of the 100 classics I got from Sony and then two Lit ones I bought at Books on Board and then I converted to see if they worked...and they did. They even have the cover art.
Nice! See the conversion wasn't so bad. Once you get little more comfortable with Calibre your going to find yourself ditching the SONY classics and getting them form feedbooks/manybooks.net so you can format them they way you like. ... Okay maybe that was just me.
Best graduation gift to myself ever. ;)
Nice! Did you warp it before you gave it to yourself :)
cassidym 06-05-2008, 08:32 PM Stop fooling with that damn addictive device and get your exams done in good form. Then you can OD on the lovely thing like the rest of us.
JSWolf 06-16-2008, 02:41 AM Congrats on the shiny new 505. It'll be attached to you from now on. And for content, you can have a look at the E-Books (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/ebooks.php?order=desc&sort=dateline) section here and find lots of well made FREE eBooks for you to enjoy reading.
