View Full Version : Silicone "case" for Kindle
Not available yet, but they are testing the waters, I think:

"Available" in clear, pink or black. It appears to cover the "forward" and "prev" bars with a little cut-out for the scroll wheel, the keyboard and the screen.
Ervserver 05-10-2008, 11:29 PM The better half saw the word "pink" and I was ordered to get one on order....Amazon sent a email with a probable ship date

badgoodDeb 05-12-2008, 04:09 PM Looks interesting! Let us know what it's like, when it arrives.
Drevil123 05-13-2008, 05:10 PM Hey I was looking at the new silicone case from Kroo and the black one seems to be blocking the scroll bar. There is another one that has an opening and it also comes with a stand for your Kindle. Expected ship date is 5-20. Here's the linky

TallMomof2 05-13-2008, 05:19 PM I preordered the blue and will let you know how well it works.

I pre-ordered the pink one. I have some taste, somewhere, I assure you....
I preordered the blue and will let you know how well it works. I want a green one. Guess I need to wait for the Kroo to be available.
Ervserver 05-13-2008, 06:57 PM funny, looks that way

badgoodDeb 05-13-2008, 11:50 PM Covering the large buttons isn't supposed to be a problem. My ipod cover covers the scroll wheel, but you just touch through it. That's the pleasure of the soft stretchy silicone.
TallMomof2 05-14-2008, 01:07 PM My blue silicon cover has already been shipped! However, it's been sent via the US Post Office from the third party seller. That means that even though I have a tracking number it won't show any information until after it's delivered since most of the time the bar code isn't scanned until my excellent postal carrier scans the delivery confirmation label when she leaves it at my house.

I'd prefer green but blue is a close second. The pink reminded me too much of Pepto Bismol. ;)

The pink assures me that the spouse will NEVER mistake mine for his.
Ervserver 05-15-2008, 01:09 AM The pink has yet to ship

honeybunny 05-15-2008, 06:31 AM I'm interested if this case alleviates the accidentally-pushing-the-buttons problem. Using the default Kindle case I don't have any trouble not pushing the buttons, but holding the Kindle without the case is awkward. But this one is such a close-fitting sleeve that I wonder if it will help with that at all.
Ervserver 05-16-2008, 01:06 AM Our pink skin shipped today :)
vagelis 05-17-2008, 08:02 PM A clear one is in the mail for me...
The pictures of the black and blue made my choice eazy... and pink was clearly out of the question :)
Kingston 05-19-2008, 02:03 PM I got the clear one and the black one today. Whoever designed these things did not turn the Kindle on before finalizing the product.
The Kindle fits snugly in the cover. Biggest problem is they designed it to cover up the luminescent strip which runs along the right side.
As anyone knows that is the essence of the GUI. You have to position the sparkly cursor to whichever menu item you want before clicking the control wheel.
As it is designed, you are fishing in the dark, since you can no longer see where the cursor is on the strip.
I quickly modified my cases by trimming off that portion which covered the control strip. I did the black one with the Kindle in and the clear one with the Kindle out. Both look kinda raggedy.
Whoever designed it did not use it with the Kindle turned on...or didn't know how the device functioned.
Also, the square for the control wheel is small and a bit raised, making it harder to control.
As anyone who has used a Kindle knows the wheel does not always respond initially, so making it even LESS responsive is a definite no-no.
Give this case a 'F' or 'D-'. I doubt it will stay on my device very long.
I was hoping it would be like the M-edge Leisure case for the 505 where the screen is also covered, keeping dust and stains out. The screen is just as exposed with these cases as it is out of the case.
Don't buy it unless you want a less responsive wheel and you understand you'll have to trim off the part covering the cursor strip.
:thumbsdow
daffy4u 05-19-2008, 02:10 PM Thanks for the review Kingston. The clear one was on my wishlist... not anymore.
Ervserver 05-19-2008, 03:10 PM oh the queen isn't gonna like this...even though its pink

Luckily it came directly from Amazon, so mine go back tomorrow (after I glue 'em back together).
The one-star reviews are going to pile up....behold:

vagelis 05-19-2008, 03:32 PM My thoughts and review on Amazon:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41QTWQqU4YL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
II was looking forward to using this with my Kindle.
Unfortunately it is one of the many items I bought that were not practical.
One major issue that I have with it, is that the skin covers the silver cursor bar. Even though it kinda shines though it, the visibility of it is quite impaired, making use of the silver cursor next to impossible.
I was thinking of using a xacto knife and cut the cursor window in the skin myself, but users of end products like this shouldn't have to go through this process. I can only imagine this to be more pronounced on the pink and black skins. So I am opting for a refund instead.
The skin is thick and though it adds adequate protection to the Kindle, it adds bulk. Also the texture and gripability (is there such a word?) of the Kindle are not as good with it. It feels kinda slippery; not very encouraging for an item protecting your $400 investment.
Perhaps those issues can be fixed with a v.2 product, but as it stands I cannot recommend it... Sorry Kroo, please fix.
Houdini7 05-19-2008, 06:53 PM I just received my Black Silicon case, and I love it!
Mine Does Not cover the silver cursor!
There is a metal hinge stand wire on the back that is integrated into the case, but I have no use for it, so I just removed it.
The back of the case has 4 tiny 'feet' to support it on a table (laying flat) and not rock around because of this metal stand.

Do you think they will accept the return after you have, erm, modified the cases?

daffy4u 05-19-2008, 07:24 PM Different company (Vizu), much better design. I like it. Thanks Houdini7.
Ervserver 05-19-2008, 08:53 PM The pink one we ordered arrived today, sending it back tomorrow, the Mrs doesn't approve how it limits access to a couple of the functions of the Kindle
Kingston 05-19-2008, 09:33 PM Do you think they will accept the return after you have, erm, modified the cases?
Dunno, but me and Elmers Glue-all are having a pow-wow tonight.
Stay tuned.
TallMomof2 05-20-2008, 04:23 PM The blue Vizu arrived today and it's darn good. If the stand had something to keep it from flipping out it would be even better. I can't angle mine at more than about 110 degrees but it should work fine.
Drevil123 05-20-2008, 07:13 PM I got mine from Vizu today and it works great! They case definitely added more "jazz" to my Kindle and they really put thought into their design. The Vizu one does not block the scroll bar that everyone is complaining about. I agree that the stand is not perfect but it is good enough, you can play around with it and find the perfect angle to make the Kindle stand. I can chomp on my cereal and read at the same time now :) Great job Vizu
KindleDC 05-21-2008, 02:35 PM Will the Kindle still fit in a case (either the standard Amazon case or one of the after-market cases like M-Edge) with the skin on? I'm guessing that it blocks the tab on the Amazon case...
Please specify which brand of skin you tried if you reply. Thanks!
TallMomof2 05-22-2008, 11:17 AM If you take the stand off the Vizu case then it will barely fit into the M-edge case. Definitely doesn't work with the original Kindle case.

My blue one does fit into the original case, though it's a little tight.

pestrat 06-05-2008, 11:17 AM I ordered and received the clear "skin" for my Kindle. Looks great but it fit too snug - it would depress the right-side Next Page bar and the pages would advance automatically. I ultimately cut out the area of the Next Page Bar, and now the skin fits fine and does not cause any problems with the Kindle.

Where did you get your from? The one from Kroo is way too snugged and does not have cutout for scroll bar. I received the one from Vizu and it was fine. If might of been too tight the first time you put it on. But if you play around with it and lightly stretch it for 2-3 mins, the case will fit fine. The vizu one fits the original book cover, if you snip off the 4 silicone circle thingys on the back. I modify mine and it looks great.
pestrat 06-14-2008, 11:30 PM I ordered mine through Amazon.com. I tried stretching it out but that didn't help, that's why I grabbed my exacto knife and cut out the section covering the right hand next page bar. Now, it works out fine.

Is it from Kroo or Vizu? My Vizu one does not have this problem.
JSWolf 06-16-2008, 09:16 PM Why is it they cannot make it fit without your having to modify it?
Alisa 06-18-2008, 03:54 AM Jon,
I need a little clarification for your question. I'm reading about two variations here. One is for the Kroo. It doesn't seem to take the scroll bar into account so people have to actually cut out space to see it if they want to use this case. (hence it doesn't seem very popular) The Vizu doesn't have this issue. It seems designed with Kindle in mind. It does have a stand that hooks into holes in the back.. If you decide you want to have BOTH the Vizu case and another case like the M-edge, you may have to give up the stand on the Vizu. The little bump-outs the stand fits into makes it hard to slide the Kindle into other cases.
Tough decision. I prefer to read out of case so the silicone Vizu looks good to me but I like the traditional cases when I travel for the protection.
Whitecollar 06-23-2008, 01:38 PM Does any one else have the blue one with the stand? Mine fits with the blue one on, with the stand still attached, into the original case.
David
Bought the Vizu (the one with the stand), usd it for about a week and then went back to my red M-Edge case. The Vizu is a very loose fit, easy to get on and off.
