I'm new here, actually just started reading the forums today after purchasing a few PDF's, and I was thinking

"hey, it would be neat to have a eBook reader that uses e-ink so I can carry these books around with me"

But alas, I couldn't find any that I really liked, the Iliad came the closest, so then I thought

"hey, maybe I will make my own from scratch!"

After seeing the $3000 prototype kit costs, that dream was crushed, however, I did notice a nice tidbit of information when reading the datasheets. There are 2 display modes, greyscale and 1-bit, each has a different refresh time of 740ms and 260ms respectively, so if someone could mod their reader to use 1bit mode, then it would refresh in 1/4 of a second!

I am still thinking of building my own, maybe getting an older iliad or sony or something and taking the e-ink screen out of it and hooking it up to one of those new Gumstix Verdex boards.

Anyways, it'll be nice to talk to people about this kind of stuff.
