MontaVista is reported to have lost over $60,000,000, going through five rounds of venture capital, three rounds of layoffs, and three CEOs in the last two years.

MontaVista provides the base OS for the PRS505.

Even if MontaVista goes the way of the Dodo there's no shortage of embedded Linux distros. Sony will always be able to find another or have someone take over a derivative if need be.

Embedded Linux still has a strong and bright future.

I tend to agree with you. Besides, Wind River allows for downloading of a DVD of their LiveCD version of Linux. With all sorts of gnarly tools for embedded development.

Let's not forget it's GPL. MontaVista Software may be kaput, but anyone with enough time, skills and motivation can pick it up and keep going. Cheer up.
