athlonkmf 05-01-2008, 06:29 AM Uhm... thanks for the announcement?
I dunno, but there are dozens of tools out there, one easier than the other. If you can't read the onscreen or inforum-instructions on how to use them, how can you read books on your reader?
Oh wait.. I see now who we're dealing with
...eehh....i downlaoded it...soooooooo.........how do i bloody install this thing friends??????????????????????
Not even bothering to doubleclick the "install"-file
hi
i was wodering...does the hack make the 1 key a page forward button by default....or do i need to do something else to achieve that????
thankkkssss
Not bothering to read the rest of the thread
No wonder no one bothers to help you out.

Corrective 05-01-2008, 07:15 AM Guys we're all friends here so play nice please.
Probably not a good idea to insult the people your trying to ask advice from, not the best way to induce helpfulness.
Also it might be helpful if u do your own research on the internet and not just from the one source.
vivaldirules 05-01-2008, 07:16 AM Stepanok, I'd recommend that you look through the thread on Rasterfarian thoroughly and look for all the comments people have made. I know that takes a lot of time, but has usually worked for me. If that fails, send a Private Message to the author with your question (or maybe to another person or two listed in the thread who seem to know what it's about). I have been puzzled with things both trivial and complex about some of the utilities posted here but people here are usually willing to help when they can. Just be patient and kind and keep trying. Good luck!
stepanok 05-01-2008, 09:21 AM you are right vivaldirules....thing is i have asked and have seen others having the same questions as me....but get no aswers....not that anyone has the obligation to give any...and yes ...going through all the posts and answers takes a lot of time, whereby i think that it would be easier if people took into account that many of us are not familiar with all the jargon etc....a post by someone just going through ,one by one ,the steps one needs to take for tha various task would be very helpfull.......i assumed this was a place one can help another and not a place of "....oohh see how clever i am , i made the thing support suahili."...not taking into account that there are not any suahili books around...( well...to the best of my knowledge ).....
all the best...peace........
Ervserver 05-01-2008, 09:32 AM Its not easy helping someone brick their 505 :book2:
epiphany 05-01-2008, 09:39 AM Hi stepanok,
Sorry you haven't received as much help as you wanted. One small recommendation: when I see a post where the author hasn't bothered to even attempt decent grammar I am inclined to skip straight over it. I'm not asking for perfect spelling and sentence construction but things like capital letters, commas and full-stops in the right places really increase readability.
I hope you can solve the problems you are having with the software.
Patricia 05-01-2008, 10:01 AM Hello Stepanok. I'm sorry that you didn't get replies to some of your queries.
I agree, it is time-consuming to have to search through a long thread.
But, consider it from the other person's point of view. Some helpful members just might get a little weary from making a similar reply for the nth time and wish that people tried a search.
Also, do try looking at our wiki. I find it very useful as a resource.
CommanderROR 05-01-2008, 10:05 AM Hi stepanok,
I can't help you with your rastafarian problem since I don't own a Sony Reader...I can however say, that this forum is not only for geeks, I'm not that much of a geek either, can't do any programming and don't know too much about the technical side of Linux devices, but so far I have always found the answers I was looking for.
People are usually very nice, helpful and polite in here, if you stay patient and post your questions in an acceptable fashion, then I'm sure you'll get the answers you need. Using the search function and the wiki can also help... ;)

Hey, I recognised my post (in bold above) from here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=172229#post172229). Does that make me a gizzmo nerd? :D
I'm sorry that I can't offer you any advice on how to use rasterfarian (having never used it myself), but what exactly are you finding difficult? (And don't say everything/starting. Try to be specific and others who may have overcome that same issue, could offer their advice.)
If you want to convert documents to view on your Sony 505, then you can alternatively use PDFRead 1.8.2 discussed in that post I referenced above or more directly here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21906).
This is only useful if the original document has text that is uncomfortably small to read and you don't mind 'images' instead of regular words in your resulting ebooks. The difference here is that with 'images' you cannot highlight or search the words on screen as they are not text words but images! But by using 'images' you can split the page and rotate it to show, say, two page flips per page. Do you understand the difference? If not, I can explain this again.
Remember you are appealing to people's willingness to help and need to 'wait' for the right answer; not demand it! :)
vivaldirules 05-01-2008, 10:19 AM I remember trying an early version of Rasterfarian and had troubles. I also didn't like how long it took. [I know it's faster now.] So then I tried PDFLRF, which has worked great for me, after I got over some installation things that I didn't understand but was able to figure out from the posts in the thread and private messaging someone. I also know that Kovid's LIBPRS500 programs includes a good utility for PDF support, too, but, like you, I needed my hand held some to get things to work for me and I think the instructions were not written for a non-geek like me so I have never really tried. Is that Kovid's fault? Certainly not! These people have all spent their own time writing, posting, and supporting code for free. I'm pretty appreciative of their efforts. In fact, very appreciative.
NatCh 05-01-2008, 10:48 AM One of the unfortunate facts of these things (the devices I mean) is that they are pretty technical, and they require a certain minimum tolerance of jargon in order to do anything beyond what the designers planned for.
I know that folks who don't want to mess with jargon and such don't like to hear that, but it's the way it is. The good news is that the Reader is extremely jargon-free to use as the designers intended, and it's only when you get off that path that you run into the technical stuff.
As for the long threads and not wanting to read them when a simple answer is all you need, I know how you feel: I have exactly the same feeling every time I have to go back to an old, lengthy thread for some bit of information -- and I participated in a lot of them at the time!
But bear in mind that what you may be effectively asking other folks to do is go back and read that same thread for you and distill an answer out of it. It's also possible that the question you're asking is addressed in a very similar form somewhere in that thread.
Of course if something is unclear to you about the information you find there, asking for clarification (something like: "hey, I don't understand what this part is referring too: ....") will likely get you an answer.
It's tough, sometimes, for us "old-timers" to wade back into things that we haven't thought about for quite a while, and we're much more likely to respond (to be able to respond, really, time constraints and so on) to a specific question, rather than a request for a general overview.

When someone does take the time to do this, it would also be nice if they added the info to the Wiki. I think most of the wisdom that comes out of the discussions has been added to the Wiki. I try to do this my self when I find some good info burried in a 200 post thread.

monkeywrench 05-01-2008, 06:12 PM The way that I look at it is this:
Sony makes a device that is very easy to use. They provide a reader, a place to get books, and a decent set of instructions that make it easy for users to use most of the functionality of this package.
If you want to learn about advanced topics and use more advanced features or pieces of software you have to be willing to put forth the time and effort that is required to attain the level of knowledge or experience that you want to reach. If you are not willing to put forth this time and effort then the only person to blame is yourself.
People on this forum have spent endless hours of their own free time discussing things that they are interested in, converting books, creating software, and helping others.
I am sorry that you(stepanok) feel the need to blame the same people that have spent their time trying to help. I think the others here would agree that their time is better spent helping those that want to learn than someone who just wants something for nothing, be it time, money, or whatever. You will get out of something what you put into it.

Hmmmm... I s'pose one could respond with "oderint dum metuant!"... but that does seem rather old-school. Positively un-American, even. That sentiment would be-- now let me think about it... Oh yes. That's it!

It means, should you be wondering "Let them hate us as long as they (also) fear us". It was a saying attributed to the Roman emperor Caligula.
jplumey 05-02-2008, 12:15 PM This thread is pointless. Can admin do something about it? stepanok clearly doesn't want our help, but rather to insult and complain. Seriously.
NatCh 05-02-2008, 12:29 PM Putting my Mod had on for just a moment, we try not to interfere with what folks are posting, unless the posts are contrary to forum policies, or just blatantly nasty. That Freedom of Speech, business, you know.
Besides, if we closed all the pointless threads, we wouldn't have half so much fun. :D
Now removing my Mod had, I'll observe that threads tend to die on their own when folks stop reading and responding to them.
stepanok 05-02-2008, 12:30 PM if its pontless why do you bother?....

Well, now. If you read a bit more carefully you would note that I explicitly point out that the quote in question expresses a sentiment that would be strictly unAmerican. A thought you may wish to consider when observing "how typically American."
But, apparently, the irony was lost on you.
How ironic.
Xenophon, signing out of this conversation for the nonce.

( again...)...why someone would bother to write this is beyond me..(perhaps... masochism?.A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences )..anyway.....thanks for the advice...
and stop taking everything so seriously folks....
ylsul 05-02-2008, 01:34 PM Nice, a troll on mobileread.
This is a forum, not a helpdesk. The expectation is that you do your own research and, if you were a really nice guy, post what you think might be helpful to other readers of this forum.
It looks like you have enough time to troll on this forum. Perhaps you should use that time to learn about your reader.

The thing is, since this is a publicly accessible forum specifically designed for people to talk to each other, one doesn't get to decide what is and isn't another member's BUSSINESS... (sic). My reply was definitely in context in this thread, and if you didn't care for it, then I'd say:
