NTFS is for Windows, Cybook is a Linux machine. Use FAT or Maybe FAT32.

I tested ext2 and it did not work which was unfortunate since I wanted to have symbolic links. This is one instance were it would be very useful to be able to rebuild the kernel...

Yes, that could be useful (especially when combined with folder support).
