View Full Version : New Kindle Firmware?
Nate the great 04-26-2008, 10:32 AM I just heard from a user that his new Kindle (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23201) has the version 1.0.8 Kindle firmware. Amazon has yet to announce it. Does anyone else have it?
P.S. If you don't know how to check: the version info is at the bottom the settings menu screen.
P.P.S Karma will go to the first person who posts a screen shot.
Houdini7 04-26-2008, 11:08 AM My new Kindle (4/22/08) does indeed have 1.0.8
Since mine is part of those that are 'Available now' I'm assuming that some changes in manufacturing happened along with the greater inventory supply...?
Houdini7 04-26-2008, 11:17 AM Here's your screen-shot:

The new one (the spouse's) is 1.0.8 as well, my old one is 1.0.4 and I don't see any operational differences in them.
Houdini7 04-26-2008, 11:38 AM I also grabbed a cap of the 411 screen.
It appears a little funny, but that's the way it was captured by the Kindle (it looks fine on the kindle itself)
Notice the New compile date:

Nate the great 04-26-2008, 12:26 PM Thanks for checking.
Next question: Could someone post the user manual that came on your new 1.0.8 kindle? I want to compare the new manual to the old manual and see if there are any new features.
Shenzhov 04-26-2008, 12:52 PM Got my Kindle this week also and just checked. I have version 1.08.
OlgaJ 04-26-2008, 01:15 PM All Kindles that were shipped in April have version 1.08. Mine was shipped 4/12/08 and is 1.08.
Houdini7 04-26-2008, 01:32 PM manual attached...
catsittingstill 04-26-2008, 04:51 PM My Kindle just came yesterday, and it has 1.0.8 FWIW.
Nate the Great was asking for the User's Manual; I have attached the appropriate Kindle file to this post (I hope). There seem to be two files associated with it--the .azw file and a .mbp file.
Oh, drat--mobileread thinks neither of these is an allowed file type. Tell you what; I've copied the .azw file and renamed it to to "Kindle User's Guide 8.prc", so there will be no confusion. I'll upload this file and you can let me know if you need the .mbp file also and if so what I should name it.

I renamed the User's Guide .azw file to .prc so I could read it on my PC with Mobipocket Reader. Worked just fine. I *think* that the .mbp file is a side file with your current position & maybe some other control/usage information.
dugbug 04-27-2008, 07:00 AM 1.0.8? Quick, see if you can create folders :)
Houdini7 04-27-2008, 09:09 AM While you can create a directory on the Kindle from the PC and put docs in it, there's no change to the Kindle's interface to let you know anything about the directory structure.
I tried folders on the Kindle and the SD card, no affect.
Bummer, I really wanted those too...
I guess Amazon thought it would confuse the average Kindle user....:smack:
Toadmanor 04-27-2008, 07:26 PM How does one take a screen shot?

catsittingstill 04-27-2008, 09:36 PM Speaking of the treasures, have you been able to get the pseudo GPS to work? I can't, on mine, and I'm not sure if a) I'm doing it wrong, or b) I live in an area that's not covered by enough "towers" to triangulate or c)that's no longer possible with the Kindle.

Yes, that makes sense. Thanks!

Yep - since I'm out in the hinterlands, there's only one tower near me (about 4 miles away) and it shows the location of that tower clearly.

I've noticed it tends to do better if you leave it on and move around ( a few city blocks worth of moving) as that seems to give it a better change to triangulate you.

wait... you have 1.0.8 and you seem to have the GPS display working? It never worked before.

It worked for me (once or twice).
Nate the great 04-29-2008, 06:30 AM I forgot to mention that I looked through the new manual and didn't see any new features. Thanks, everyone, for posting a copy.

I've seen mine work from time to time
(not that I really try it much, I have better GPS solutions available to me)
But I do get the "Not Available, Not Available" too...
huevos 04-29-2008, 09:34 AM 1.0.8 on mine as well. received it in mid april.
I just went to the amazon website and here is what I found and here is the link.
"To check the software version installed on your Kindle:
Set your Kindle power switch to the "ON" position.
Press the Home key and then select "Settings" from the Home menu.
View the version listed at the bottom of the Settings screen. The version listed should be "Kindle 1.0.4 (144750018)" or "Kindle 1.0.8 (164820023).""
I also just found this.
The current version of your Kindle software is listed in your Kindle settings. If you see version 1.0.4 or 1.0.8 listed, you have the most recent software version. (There is no difference between these software versions.)

they should have said, no functional difference. I think there is a different hardware part in the newer readers that required the change in firmware. Likely just a vendor change or something minor.

CopperTrail 05-31-2008, 07:18 AM Mine is scheduled to arrive Monday, I'll post the firmware when it gets here. Based on what I've read on these forums and elsewhere, I'm pretty excited about this device :)

Screen savers? Why do you need screen savers on an eInk device? It doesn't suffer "burn in" like a CRT does!
wallcraft 05-31-2008, 08:48 AM Screen savers? Why do you need screen savers on an eInk device? It doesn't suffer "burn in" like a CRT does! They are used as a signal that the Kindle is in sleep mode, so they are actually "battery savers". If the wireless is explicitly turned off, I don't know how much difference it makes. I also saw a post, which I did not necessarily believe, that the screen saver mode is identical to actually turning the device off (except that the latter gives a blank screen - again as a visual clue that it is "off").

Yes, I wonder this about my Kindle, they don't make it very clear in the docs. It has what is called "sleep mode" which you can put the device in, or it goes into itself after you don't turn a page for a while. This is when the "screen saver" pics are displayed. Or, you can turn the "power" switch off which blanks the screen.
So, is the only difference between sleep mode and off that the screen displays a pic? Of course, they screen doesn't need power to display the pic so there is no difference there. Turning the machine on and taking it out of sleep mode seem to take the same amount of time... about 5 seconds.

HarryT 05-31-2008, 11:07 AM Thank you - that makes sense. It sounds a little like the Gen3's auto power-off feature, but that just blanks the screen (and powers off the machine) after a certain period of inactivity.
honeybunny 06-01-2008, 08:46 PM I think it's just meant to be pretty. They used beautiful greyscale bitmaps that look fabulous in greyscale and on the eInk display. Some people here have made more images that you can add, as well.

Battery savers? NOPE! Battery wasters. Every time the screen updates, some of the battery is used. So this "screen saver" is actually not needed to save the screen nor is it saving any battery life. It's just a feature that's not needed at all since it doesn't do what it is claimed it does.
daffy4u 06-01-2008, 10:54 PM I like the feature. I use it as an opportunity to upload my own pics containing contact information should my Kindle be lost or "walk away".

But it's not using any battery life either (provided it's just a static image); it takes just as much battery power to blank the screen as it does to display any other image :).

Its just showing the screen saver image, no updates to the display.
Doesn't the kindle search index database get updated in suspend mode (assuming you recently bought some books that have yet to be indexed)?

badgoodDeb 06-02-2008, 07:31 PM You're all forgetting: it disables the next/prev keys and any other keys which may lose your place in the book. The HOME button, the search button, etc..... It may be saving some battery by not scanning those buttons -- but it sure saves frustration of having lost your place in the book! :bookworm:
