I had a heck of a time getting the thing running. I had to return the first one because it froze and wouldn't reset.

Anyway, I didn't do a lot of research on readers and picked Sony because of what they boasted it can do on their site. I haven't downloaded any books except the free ones they give and of course they work fine. I have imported 2 PDF ebooks that are technical books. The font size is horrible. I was told by Sony to change the orientation which helped but it sucks holding the book that way.

I was actually directed to this site by ebooks.com support. By the way, Sony support sucks! I've emailed with them a couple of times and it was very frustrating. They don't read the entire email and just cut/paste some text from their site as an "answer" and don't actually answer my questions.

So, I understand from ebooks.com the Sony can't read any books from there. I guess my question is where can I buy ebooks, besides the Sony store, that will work on this reader? I need some technical computer books but want to make sure I get them from someplace that will work with the Sony.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi DiverDave. You can get books at Fictionwise.com. Also lots of free book s available here on the Forum. And, you can covert books from other formats to the Sony formal using the software at this site http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Libprs500

Welcome, Dave. Check out the Wiki (top of your screen) where there are lots of resources listed, including a list of many sites that sell ebooks in a variety of formats. As to PDFs, I routinely use the free PDFLRF utility (again, check the Wiki for a link). It works very well on non-DRM PDFs, although my usual use of it does rotate the page to landscape mode. But you'll find the result very much easier to read than an unconverted PDF if it was formatted for 8-1/2" x 11".

Hi DiverDave (love the name!):

Welcome to MobileRead.

Yes, as mentioned, there are personally hand-crafted and FREE public domain books here. Go to the Sony forum where you'll see the download sticky.

If you do a search on the internet for more titles for the Sony unit, look for these terms:

1) LRF [this is for the Sony]
2) Sony Reader
3) Bbeb

I own a Sony PRS-505 and really love it.

If you have more questions, please let us know and someone here will offer help.

Don

Thanks all! I'll look into doing that conversion. I really need to convert these PDFs!

It does indeed. Too bad it's so freaking expensive to do! It's been a couple of years since I went on a good trip. Last good trip was a week on Cayman Brac with some good friends.

My next trip is in January 2010!!! Argh... Im going to Roatan. Saving 25 bucks a week takes a while to save up enough dough.

Hey Roy -

Where ya going in Roatan, Coco View perhaps? My wife has gone down there every year for 12 or 13 years, usually starting on the tail end of January and staying a week or 2 into February. She's a dive travel specialist, so PM me if you think she might be able to help you out with anything diving related. You too, DiverDave.

Thanks. See if she can get me a long weekend trip to the Caymans for under $600! ;-)
