View Full Version : New Hack for the 505
JSWolf 04-24-2008, 05:55 PM I've modified the image for the 505 hack image that gives you the unified font, the new icons, and the clock. I've modified it so instead of having to go find the advanced option to actually turn off the 505, you can do it from anyplace by just holding the enter button down for about 5 seconds. if anyone wants this, I can attach it here if it's not too large.
Ervserver 04-24-2008, 06:59 PM Will doing this cause any issues with future firmware updates from Sony?
NatCh 04-24-2008, 09:33 PM I shouldn't think so, the past updates have just overwritten the existing firmware. If they follow that approach, it'll just wipe the changes away. :shrug:
macphersondh 04-25-2008, 04:22 AM I'd be interested in tjhis, I miss having the clock!
David
electristan 04-25-2008, 04:37 AM I'd like it please :) i turn off the reader every night so this would be great.
sindget41 04-25-2008, 10:54 AM JSWOLF.... Yes, I'd love to try it -- I am missing the hacks I had on my old 500.
JSWolf 04-25-2008, 04:36 PM I'd like it please :) i turn off the reader every night so this would be great.
The 505 does have a menu option to turn off the power. But it is buried in settings/advanced. Just a kind of a pain to have to wade through the menues to get to it. Anyway, I'll see if I zip the contents of the SD card if it will fit here. If not, I'll try it in pieces and see.
JSWolf 04-25-2008, 05:20 PM 1.UnZip this to the root of the SD card (might work with a memory stick).
2. Power off the 505 using the power switch.
3. Insert the SD card
4. Turn on the 505.
5. Press 6 to flash the image.
6. When done, press 9 to reboot.
7. Once the screen goes blank remove the SD card
8. Once it's booted, you are all set
You will have the clock, the unified font,the new icons, and the press and hold the enter button to power down the 505.
Use at your own risk.
macphersondh 04-25-2008, 07:26 PM Fabulous!!!!
Worked instantly.
Love the new font/icons and I have the clock back!!!!!!
Thanks!
David
JeffElkins 04-25-2008, 07:48 PM Didn't work with my 505. I get a failure message telling me to check the flash.log - and the flash.log says the flash was successful.
JSWolf 04-25-2008, 09:58 PM Jeff, it's possible you may have not enough free memory for performing the flash. Try removing some of the content to free up ram and try again.
And to all, don't forget that holding the enter button for about 5 seconds will cause the 505 to power down.
Dajala 04-26-2008, 03:43 AM Worked perfectly, looks great, thank you! :-)
JSWolf 04-26-2008, 07:48 AM Worked perfectly, looks great, thank you! :-)
Happy to help. And now anyone who uses this image as opposed to the original image has an easy shut off that works very well and a lot easier then finding the menu option buried a few levels deep.

I only had three books in main storage, but I deleted them and tried again: same result, failure to flash. autorun.log contains: copy error: Fsk error, code = -56
electristan 04-26-2008, 11:35 AM It didn't work for me either. I get the same message "telling me to check the flash.log - and the flash.log says the flash was successful." any ideas? i formated the internal memory as well but get the same result.
there is nothing as easy as releaseing some software is there ;)
JeffElkins 04-26-2008, 11:39 AM I tried again with a different sd card: same result :(
The Old Man 04-26-2008, 11:59 AM I tried again with a different sd card: same result :(
After the hack failed were you still left with an operating 505?
JeffElkins 04-26-2008, 12:01 PM After the hack failed were you still left with an operating 505?
Luckily, yes!
The Old Man 04-26-2008, 12:44 PM Just installed the hack with no problems. Works great!
I did completely shut down the 505 before installing, not just putting into the sleep mode. I don't know if that would have anything to do with those having a problem.

I tried it both ways.
The Old Man 04-26-2008, 12:56 PM Strange...
Just another thought - I had no card in the memory card slot and about 130mb available on the Reader as show on libprs500.
dynabook 04-26-2008, 01:42 PM Someone in another thread was having trouble with his image and it turned out his unzip program was replacing UNIX style end-of-lines with Mac/DOS EOL. Check to see if your unzip program is doing this to you.

Still no joy here. I'm using linux unzip so I tried both unzipping with the -a and then the -b options, neither changing the outcome. Then I brought up a WinXP vmware image and tried WinZip also w/o success. Failure to flash message in all cases.

I'm using winrar in xp and having the same result
NatCh 04-26-2008, 09:19 PM I'm curious, could this method be used to restore an original firmware image? Would it be a workable layman solution to breaking a 505 out of the "Firmware Update Not Completed" loop?
bookbinder 04-27-2008, 12:18 AM 1.UnZip this to the root of the SD card (might work with a memory stick).

Jon,
I'd like to make button "1" a page-turn button. Is it possible with this hack?
Donnageddon 04-27-2008, 02:34 AM No joy here either. The flash will not flash. I get a very quick message of ... something "not able to copy to /tmp/."
The autorun log says "copy error: Fsk error, code = -41"
Over 980 MB left on my 1 GB SD card, so I don't think it is a lack of space.
I appreciate the work, Jon. Just didn't work out for me.
Donnageddon 04-27-2008, 02:39 AM Jon,
I'd like to make button "1" a page-turn button. Is it possible with this hack?
Bookbinder, I am going to take a guess that you view files in a landscape orientation?
davidw89 04-28-2008, 07:13 AM 1.UnZip this to the root of the SD card (might work with a memory stick).

Worked fine..THE ICONS LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER and the time at the bottom right hand screen..genius buddy
So can i delete the stuff from the memory card afterward?
The Old Man 04-28-2008, 07:22 AM Worked fine..THE ICONS LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER and the time at the bottom right hand screen..genius buddy

Absolutely! You should remove the memory card ontaining the hack files from the Reader. You can then delete the files from the SD card or save them, your choice.
My flashing worked ok :) Thanks!
So, to power my 505 off I have to press the ENTER button for 5 secs? coz I do that and nothing happens until I press any other button and the screen turns blank. Is that ok?
JSWolf 04-28-2008, 08:03 AM Jon,
I'd like to make button "1" a page-turn button. Is it possible with this hack?
Yes, it is possible to make the 1 key a page forward button. And you can also then make the 1 key when held do what the 1 key normally does on a regular press. I can make this mod, but again it's use at your own risk.
JSWolf 04-28-2008, 08:04 AM For those who cannot get the image to install, I have no idea why it's not working. One one 505 I tried, I got a -56 error in the log and on another it worked fine. Then I applied the hack to my 505 and it went without a hitch.

Is the fellow who wrote the flashing software still around?
wmrawls 04-28-2008, 03:00 PM Worked great. Thanks for sharing:thanks:
kfarmer 04-29-2008, 02:39 AM I too was encountering the FSK error. However, taking a cue from http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=154197&postcount=67, I created a /tmp directory at the root of my 505, and tried again.
Worked fine.
Hope this helps...
davidw89 04-29-2008, 07:17 AM Hey JSWolf, the font looks way better!!! Whats do you plan to do next with it?
curtw 04-29-2008, 07:44 AM I've modified the image for the 505 hack image that gives you the unified font, the new icons, and the clock. Are there examples or screenshots of the font in the forums here somewhere that we can look at before committing to the installation?
jplumey 04-29-2008, 09:12 AM I used to use one of the other images available on the web that turned the joystick into a page turner. I would love to incorporate this hack with your file.
stepanok 04-29-2008, 09:50 AM Yes, it is possible to make the 1 key a page forward button. And you can also then make the 1 key when held do what the 1 key normally does on a regular press. I can make this mod, but again it's use at your own risk.
hi
i was wodering...does the hack make the 1 key a page forward button by default....or do i need to do something else to achieve that????
thankkkssss
JeffElkins 04-29-2008, 10:43 AM I too was encountering the FSK error. However, taking a cue from http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=154197&postcount=67, I created a /tmp directory at the root of my 505, and tried again.
This fixed my problem. I wonder if formatting internal memory wiped out a temp dir?
horseyride 04-29-2008, 10:49 AM Worked great, thanks. Made sure I had /tmp before I started.
growat 04-29-2008, 05:52 PM Had the 505 for a little over 24 hours and not having the clock visible while reading was the first thing I was wondering about. Your hack looks great.
Total n00b question. Is the clock always in 24 hour time?
Thanks,
Graham
sealbeater 04-29-2008, 06:20 PM Thank you, thank you thank you so much for this. I had read up on the hacks but never had an easy way to apply them, this rules!! Should make this sticky or something.

I was wondering about that too, apparently if you go into Settings and About, you can change the clock setting from 12/24 by pressing 0.
growat 04-29-2008, 06:48 PM Thanks Sealbeater, that put me on AM/PM.
Corrective 04-29-2008, 10:26 PM making a folder called tmp in the readers drive worked great thanks for that.
also thanks for the great hack
Donnageddon 04-29-2008, 11:48 PM Still no joy. I have the tmp folder, but now when I try to flash at the Run script page, I get a quick "error loading libfskload to /imp/
And then a constant "Exception invalid type" on the Run script page along with the
6: flash image
9: reboot
MENU: exit
fifteenjugglers 04-30-2008, 12:26 AM Awesome! Worked a treat for me :)
Thanks very much!

davidw89 04-30-2008, 06:05 AM Is there any chance to make the 1 button as flip through to the next page button?
markiehill 04-30-2008, 08:33 AM i had the invalid exception, make sure your memory card is empty before you put the hack on it. i mistakenly allowed it to merge the contents of the hack with the existing directories on my first attempt and got exception message.
i then deleted everything off the card , re extracted the hack and it worked perfectly.

electristan 04-30-2008, 08:38 AM This is great :) the /tmp folder was the key. thanks a lot JSWolf
DrMoze 04-30-2008, 10:08 AM Will this flash remove the cyrillic font capability that I previously flashed onto my 505? (Along with uniform font, new icons, and clock.) Very handy feature, btw!
MSWallack 05-01-2008, 02:31 PM I was also able to successfully hack my 505. I made sure that the \tmp folder exited on the Reader. Also, before hacking, I copied everything off of the SD card to my computer so it was blank when I put the hack image on the card. After successfully hacking, I simply deleted the hack image from the card and copied the files back.
I'm so pleased to have the icons, unified font size, and clock back! It's funny: I like my 505 much more than I liked my 500, yet I couldn't get over not having these little upgrades. Now, if we could just hack the direction buttons to become page turn (like the old joystick hack), I'd really be set. I'm curious, given the position of the volume button (I don't listen to MP3s on my Reader) could it be changed to page forward/page back?
---Michael
JSWolf 05-01-2008, 02:53 PM 1.UnZip this to the root of the SD card (might work with a memory stick).

8. Once it's booted, you are all set
You will have the clock, the unified font,the new icons, and the press and hold the enter button to power down the 505.

This new hack is the same as the previous hack except the 1 key is not a page forward key and I hope holding the 1 key works as the 1 key used to with just a press.
This modification is for bookbinder.
JSWolf 05-01-2008, 02:54 PM My flashing worked ok :) Thanks!
So, to power my 505 off I have to press the ENTER button for 5 secs? coz I do that and nothing happens until I press any other button and the screen turns blank. Is that ok?
Mine does eventually turn off on it's own without another key press. maybe you aren't wating long enough. i cannot say for sure.
JSWolf 05-01-2008, 02:56 PM hi
i was wodering...does the hack make the 1 key a page forward button by default....or do i need to do something else to achieve that????

The first hack I posted here does not change any of the number buttons. But the second hack I just posted is the same as the first but changes the 1 button to page forward. And I hope (not tested) holding the 1 button works as a regular 1 press does.
Donnageddon 05-01-2008, 10:04 PM OK... ohkay.... I figured it out.
For any other misguided souls out there, here is why Jon's hack refused to install on my 505.
I dragged the zip file onto my SD card and then extracted the files onto the same SD card.
I am not sure why it made a difference, but once I decided to "experiment" and unziped the files from my computers hard disk directly on to my SD card... it worked!
Have no explanation for why that made the difference, but it did.
Thanks Jon for a great hack!!
Ervserver 05-01-2008, 11:31 PM interesting, ok thats solved :)
growat 05-01-2008, 11:59 PM Hi Guys,
Wondered if anyone else had issues with the eBook Library software seeing their SD card after the hack. I erased the hack from the card but have an "error" over the SD card icon in the left hand window of the program. The reader can still see books on the card, but I have to add them manually through windows explorer.
I've only had the Reader a few days but is it the general consensus that the eBook Library is better left asleep and to stick with libprs500?
Thanks,
Graham
AnemicOak 05-02-2008, 08:33 AM I've only had the Reader a few days but is it the general consensus that the eBook Library is better left asleep and to stick with libprs500?
For a lot of folks libprs500 is the way to go. I use it for conversions, but have found I use the Sony software for actually managing my books.
Mine does eventually turn off on it's own without another key press. maybe you aren't wating long enough. i cannot say for sure.
I think you're right. I wasn't waiting long enough. I tried not pressing any key and it certainly turned off ;) Thanks for your response.
One question about the 1-key hack: So this key always acts as the page-turn button? Even on the menu screens?
Thanx again
JSWolf 05-02-2008, 09:42 AM I think you're right. I wasn't waiting long enough. I tried not pressing any key and it certainly turned off ;) Thanks for your response.
One question about the 1-key hack: So this key always acts as the page-turn button? Even on the menu screens?
Thanx again
I'm guessing that the 1 key would be a page turn even on menues and holding it down for a few sections would act like a normal unhacked 1 press.
I cannot properly test it out as I don't have that hack installed. But given how other key function changes work, that assumption is mot likely correct.
There is the first hack here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=174404&postcount=8) that doesn't change the 1 key if you don't want it changed and has all the other features.
stasys 05-02-2008, 11:36 AM Jon,
Would it be possible to see your unified font somwhere?
JSWolf 05-02-2008, 11:40 AM All the unified font hack is is just changing what size the 505 uses when it ithinks it should use the larger font so it matches the smaller font. Nothing different otherwise.
kbarnsda 05-02-2008, 03:55 PM Hello! Everything worked nicely!!.
I made a subdir at the root of the 505 called \tmp, unzipped the files while ON the SD.
I then turned the 505 totally off per the other forum member suggestions.
The flash menu came up properly the first time. Option #6 gave a good flash.
Thank you!!!! This is very nice. I extremely like the clock.
Using hack #2
One note...I was unable to set the clock with the #1 key as 1300 (1pm).
My work around was I set the clock to 0959 AM and waited till the 505 advanced to
1000 am. This put the #1 digit in the correct place without having to enter it.
When I "held" the #1 key, a lower case alpha digit was generated in some cases
or the cursor would progress to the next field if adjusting the date/time.
=================================================
Using hack #1
I decided to reflash with the original hack#1 instead.
All went smoothly and the #1 key function returned perfectly.
I have read for several hours now and all seems to be ok.
Thank you for your work!!
davidw89 05-02-2008, 07:31 PM This new hack is the same as the previous hack except the 1 key is not a page forward key and I hope holding the 1 key works as the 1 key used to with just a press.
This modification is for bookbinder.
Using hack 2, the 1 button does indeed forward one page but it becomes useless for doing anything else (aka i can't click the begin reading or play the audio file if its on the 1 button or anything else)
I wonder if you can set a button to open another book. I'd like to toggle between one ebook and a dictionary ebook by pressing #1 and/or #2. (Switching ebooks it's a feature I happen to use a lot in my ebookwise 1150.)
Is that possible? thanx!
kfarmer 05-03-2008, 01:14 AM Ret:
Have you made use of the bookmarks? I *think* if you hold down the bookmark key you will go to the bookmarks page (if not, then *that* would be a good hack).
JSWolf 05-03-2008, 09:24 AM So it seems that Hack #2 is not all that useful since the 1 key is gone. What I will try to make the 1 key page forward on hold and put it back as normal on a regular press. That would work to fix the problem where the 1 key is needed.
Look for Hack #3 later this weekend.
macphersondh 05-03-2008, 10:38 AM Cool - I was just about to revert to hack 1 until I read about possible hack 3!
David
kbarnsda 05-03-2008, 12:41 PM Hello,
Thanks again for hack #1.
I hated drilling down to the "all off" button and a clock is a wonderful addition.
I have a few questions....
Is it possible to program the volume rocker switch for something else?
Am I in a minority, or do most folks not use the reader for music?
I have several Ipod's for my music needs.
I don't want to trade off battery life on the 505 for the privledge of listening to music on the 505.
I therefore have a very nice rocker switch on the bottom that I will never use.:idea2:
JSWolf 05-03-2008, 02:15 PM it might be possible. But I cannot be sure. i can try modifying the volume and make a hack #3a and someone who doesn't use 505 for listening to mp3 can try it and see what happens. So if it messes up the volume buttons, it won't matter.
Great hack JSWolf, the icons and clock are awesome!!
Since we are on the topic of key assignments. Is there anyway to reassign a key so that it launches a program from the SD. (e.g. the autorun.xml) program. This would really make the dictionary much easier to use.
As for looking for additional key sequences. The PRS reader can detect multiple key presses. (e.g. holding down the mark + zoom) as a key sequence.
kfarmer 05-05-2008, 01:10 PM At this point, one wonders whether it's feasible to write a program to dynamically reassign keys? Basically, provide a library of key handlers, and an app that intercepts all keys and routes them either to the default, or to one of the customer handlers.
Xenophon 05-05-2008, 03:00 PM Is one of the things you can do "on keypress" opening a file (as in reading a particular book)? If so, it should be possible to build an alternate book browser with better support for large libraries.
Xenophon
I wonder if we could use the "off" slider in our readers to standbye our units AND turn them completely off. I mean, if you hold the slider for 5 seconds (just like the enter button in hack#1) it turns the unit off. And if you just slide it it puts it in standbye mode (regular behavior).
I think it makes more sense and it's more intuitive having that slider do two similar tasks.
Now....Is it possible?
kbarnsda 05-07-2008, 08:42 AM I wonder if we could use the "off" slider in our readers to standbye our units AND turn them completely off. I really like this idea regarding dual use of the off switch.
I have a question in relation to it.
The purpose of turning totally off is presumably to save battery power.
At what point does the energy consumed in leaving it on cross over with the extra energy consumed in a total reboot of the system?
If this is a moot point, then why not have the switch just turn the 505 totally off instead. That way a person could just leave it on and let it time out or turn totally off with the switch.
JSWolf 05-07-2008, 10:01 AM I found that the 505 power off function is not the same as the 500 power off function. I did fix the problem so now when you press and hold the enter button, it properly shuts off instead f just going into sleep mode like before. I do apologize for this mistake. Anyway, I've also experimented with changing the volume on hold keys and it does work fine. Later today, I'll have a new hack that has a proper power off function.
Also for those who do use the mp3 player functionality, I've hopefully modified the volume buttons for more functionality. If it works, when you press and hold the volume up, you'll go to the next track and if you hold and press the volume down, you'll go to the previous track. So if you read and listen at the same time, you'll be able to switch tracks. Please if anyone does use this, please let me know if it works for you.
JSWolf 05-07-2008, 10:20 AM 1.UnZip this to the root of the SD card (might work with a memory stick).
2. Power off the 505 using the power switch.
3. Insert the SD card
4. Turn on the 505.
5. Press 6 to flash the image.
6. When done, press 9 to reboot.
7. Once the screen goes blank remove the SD card
8. Once it's booted, you are all set
You will have the clock, the unified font,the new icons, holding volume buttons will go to track forward/previous, and holding the enter button to power down the 505 with the shutting down message.
Use at your own risk.
I've fixed a mistake in the mod for holding the enter button down to power off the 505. Also, if you use the mp3 function, it should allow track forward and back when holding the volume up/down. Just pressing will still do volume up/down. But you will lose the mute on volume hold. The 1 button is now back to normal since that hack was a miserable failure.
macphersondh 05-07-2008, 10:51 AM I'm guessing that the 1 key would be a page turn even on menues and holding it down for a few sections would act like a normal unhacked 1 press.
So have you abandoned that idea?
David

That you for that useful bit of information. I don't have a memory stick. So testing it was not possible.
JSWolf 05-07-2008, 02:54 PM So have you abandoned that idea?
David
Since the 1 key hack didn't really work, I have abandoned it. The change to make the 1 key work as normal when held for a few didn't seem to work. So for now unless someone else can sort it, I've decided not to do it.
However, if anyone wants, I may be able to make the volume up/down work as page forward/next.
JSWolf 05-07-2008, 03:06 PM I have just installed Hack #3 and holding the volume button while reading does move to the next or previous track in order. So if you use the mp3 part while reading, you will now have increased functionality. So instead of holding the volume and getting mute, you'll be able to change tracks.
JSWolf would it be possible to add a hack to have the <Enter> button launch the autorun.js application?
=X=
mcramer 05-07-2008, 06:54 PM Can anybody take a shot of the screen with the clock, font change etc? I'm sitting at work with no SD card but have a burning desire to see what the hack does :)
Cheers

I can give you a description that will give you enough info to picture it in your mind. Picture the following....
The unified font is all the ame size font now. It's using the smaller font that the menus use then something is too large to fit at the larger size. Now on the bar at the bottom that has the batter meter, go to the right side and picture a close. Mine currently is displaying 08:01pm. The clock only updated on a screen refresh.

It might be possible. But that would be beyond what I know so far.
kbarnsda 05-07-2008, 10:09 PM However, if anyone wants, I may be able to make the volume up/down work as page forward/next.
I would really like to have this if it would not be too much trouble.
It would fit perfectly with the way I use the 505.
I will never use the reader as a MP3 player.
Thanks for the great hacks!! I look forward each day seeing what you have come up with.
K
JSWolf 05-08-2008, 09:51 PM kbarnsda, since you don't use the mp3 player and don't plan on it, I'll make the volume up/down page next/previous and on hold of the volume to power off and put the hold of the enter back to normal.

Absolutely perfect! Thanks! I'm off on a 24 hour trip. Will check back in when I return!! Thanks..K
Hi Wolf,
I don't think it's too difficult. From looking at the script it looks all that is required is the following changes <see below>
If the state change is triggered by setting the environmental variable from STATE=?? to STATE="AUTORUN" it should trigger the autorun.xml/autorun.js scripts.
Caviate: I have not programmed on the SONY but the syntax is easy enough to read and understand.
<<<<<<<<<<< applicationStart.xml
////// MAP THE KEY
<boolean key="0x27-hold" do="dolaunchAutoRun"/>
<<<< main.xml
////// THIS CODE IS THEN CALLED
<code>
<function id="dolaunchAutoRun">
this.setVariable("STATE", "AUTORUN");
// I don't think this is necessary the line above should
// trigger this call, but if it doesn't we call it
this.modelChange();
</function>
</code>
If that doesn't work we might have to add part of this code found in the autorun.xml
in the main.xml file
<code>
<function id="loadScript">
if (!this.hasOwnProperty('_scriptLoaded'))
this._scriptLoaded = false;
if (!this._scriptLoaded)
{
var path = kbook.autoRunRoot.path;
var index = path.lastIndexOf('/');
if (index > 0)
path = path.substring(0, index + 1);
this.driveroot = path.substring(0,2);
var target = this.AUTORUN_GROUP.AUTORUN;
target.driveroot = this.driveroot;
this.runJs(path+"autorun.js",target);
}
this._scriptLoaded = true;
</function>
</code>
<<<< main.xml
/////////////// Update modelChange to call the loadscript function
<function id="modelChanged">
....
case "AUTORUN":
this.loadScript();
this.AUTORUN_GROUP.show(true);
target = this.AUTORUN_GROUP.AUTORUN
break;
....
</function>
palex481 05-13-2008, 06:14 PM I have a request. Can you make the Joystick forward and back buttons be reassigned to forward and back page turns?
I have yet to find a use for them that would make this change cause me to lose any functionality. When browsing through the library, the forward and back page buttons do the same as the joystick for me, so am I missing something or what are the forward and back joystick buttons really good for as they are functioning now?
I don't use the music function at all.
Please let me know if this is feasible. I would appreciate it greatly.
UPDATE: Nevermind, I did more research and went with the crazy russian translation... I got the joystick, unified font, clock, and new icons.... and a bonus I have russian font. My little brother is studying russian. This will convince him to buy an ebook reader. Thanks anyways!
Thanks.
JSWolf 05-14-2008, 05:12 AM X as for the mod you came up with for the 505 to start autorun, I'd hold off on applying that until there is a new firmware available. The hacks I am doing are simple and if they don't work, you can always go to a hack that does work without fear of bricking. Anything more complex, I'd like to have tested first on a reader that doesn't matter if it bricks.
The joystick forward/back is for history forward/back. So if I was to change that, you'd lose that functionality. it was done on the 500 because the page turn buttons were on the left. Now we have the buttons on the right and the silver button bottom right. So seriously, I see no need to modify the joystick buttons.
JSWolf 05-14-2008, 05:13 AM kbarnsda, since you don't use the mp3 player and don't plan on it, I'll make the volume up/down page next/previous and on hold of the volume to power off and put the hold of the enter back to normal.
These changes for the mp3 volume button, I'll make today and post it today.
HarryT 05-14-2008, 05:15 AM I've only had the Reader a few days but is it the general consensus that the eBook Library is better left asleep and to stick with libprs500?
Thanks,
Graham
It depends.
You need to use the eBook Library if you want to buy books from the Sony eBook Store.
The other benefit of using it is that it "pre-paginates" books when you copy them to the Reader. If you transfer books by some other method, you can (for large books) experience lengthy delays when you open a book for the first time, or select a new font size for the first time.
palex481 05-14-2008, 07:08 PM I see your point about the buttons on both sides Jon, but I like hitting the joystick forward button to flip the page. I'll tell you why. I keep the reader in the case all the time and I hold the left side of the case with my left hand, and my right thumb rests on the joystick. The two page turn buttons on the right side are too high up for my tastes.
What's this silver button bottom right you speak of?
I never use history unless I goto the menu option and use it to find my place if I accidentally start the book over or something like that.
An interesting side note though, since I installed the joystick hack from the russian forum, joystick right is page next always, but joystick left is sometimes page back and sometimes its page back + small font...I always read in medium, so when it goes page back + small font the page numbers change. I have gotten past it. I just flip forward with the joystick and if I need to go back I flip with the page back button.
weird stuff
pretenderep 05-17-2008, 04:10 AM Is there any way to get back to the original configuration once you've installed this hack?
Hey Wolf,
Great job!! Used the 1st hack and works perfect. the 5 sec shutdown too. I was really missing a clock there. Thanks!!
JSWolf 05-17-2008, 08:09 AM Is there any way to get back to the original configuration once you've installed this hack?
There is a way. You undo the image, remove all the hacks and put it back as it once was. Then you make a new image, install that and there you go. But, I don't know all the ins and outs enough to be able to dehack this 100%.

Hi
Ricky
Not yet. There is supposed to be a new firmware released soon by firmware. At that point, some of the developers may develop more elaborate hacks including that feature (which many people would like).
mcramer 05-26-2008, 04:07 AM Just a quick word of thanks for the hack! Updated and now I have a clock - sweet :)
Jeeves 06-02-2008, 09:13 PM Yes, BIG thanks - that's the first hack I've ever tried and it looks faaaantastic. The clock, the icons, the Cyrillic font support and everything.... ah, the OK button for shutting down - just perfect.
THANK YOU :2thumbsup

I am very interested in knowing this as well. I posted a similar request in PRS-500's forum and no opinions so far.

Sorry, but as I only do English, I am not about to go trying to change the actual menu text.
@Ahorso+Lovebeta,
I posted the translation of the procedure in here (my 2nd post).

You can redirect your English-non-speaking-Spanish-speaking friends there. Take a look around too. There is worthy stuff.
See you there;)
krighton 07-04-2008, 08:14 AM If you reset the 505 to factory default settings (not sure what combination of keys, reset button does that) would that remove the hack?
