View Full Version : Multiple Gmail-invites giveaways
Alexander Turcic 09-07-2004, 03:24 AM We have twelve SIXTEEN TWENTY-TWO Gmail invites to giveaway. All you have to do is reply to this thread and tell us what your favorite eBook reader is any why (one or two sentences is enough).
PS: If you won a Gmail invite before, but haven't received it yet, please PM me - I need your contact e-mail to send the invite!
hodson 09-07-2004, 05:14 AM By far, my favorite eBook reader is iSilo. It doesn't read ALL the formats but what makes it the best in my mind is its little companion...iSiloX. Using these two together is a very powerful combination. Now not only can I read most eBooks, I can also convert any website VERY quickly to be read later on my PDA after the next HotSync. I like the way that iSiloX keeps much of the formatting in the conversion so it looks better on my screen. iSiloX also allows me to "password protect" any document and gives me the choice on whether to put it in PDA RAM or on the memory card. Nice touch. There are so many options to "tweak" it makes it a GREAT program for advanced as well as newbies.
iSilo also has a feature that I look for in any reader I've tried...it does an excellent job of smooth scrolling. This is my favorite way to read.
Thanks for the opportunity to share and try for a Gmail Invite!

rbentley101 09-07-2004, 10:08 AM Isilo is my favorite. This little program does it all. It can read ebooks and html. With IsiloX you have everything. I am able to read books, check websites and even read the comics. Doesn't get much better than this.
hacker 09-07-2004, 11:46 AM I've got 4 unused GMail invites also, from the thread earlier last week... most of those that responded in that thread have GMail accounts, and the two that did not, I've contacted privately to give them their address.
So I have 4 left to hand out. That makes 16 total between the two of us.
Alexander Turcic 09-07-2004, 11:54 AM That's too cool! Made the changes in the first post.
jerryss 09-07-2004, 02:03 PM I use Isolo.
What can I say. There is very little that this cool program won't do.
Thanks for the opportunity to share and try for a Gmail Invite!

tipsorg 09-07-2004, 03:12 PM Hello there and thanks for gmail chance !
My favorite eBook reader is Mobipocket: a secure reading system and so much notes included for each downloaded ebook.
All tHe best!

Alexander Turcic 09-07-2004, 04:24 PM jerryss, check your email for the invite. tipsorg, rbentley101, hodson PM me and tell me where you want to have the invite send to.
12 more invites available. Hurry ;)
Dan Hamilton 09-07-2004, 05:44 PM My favorite is Palmone's eReader Pro.
I have used it for several year and I love it.
The eReader bookstore has a wide selection of currently popular titles, making it easy to find a variety of books to take with me on one of my many business trips.
The eReader software supports a variety of fonts and colore schemes, allowing me to customize the reader to make it easy on my eyes. I also like the abililty to use bookmarks to save my place, and to annotate by adding my own personal notes, when desired.
Unregistered 09-07-2004, 06:49 PM Another eReader user here, who appreciates the ability to change the backgrounds, font faces and size, note capabilities and bookmarks.
I also like the eReader store, powered by Peanut Press, for a great variety at discount prices without the hassles of points.

cbarnett 09-07-2004, 07:19 PM I don't need a gmail invite, but do have 6 I can add to the pool, if you want them (they just keep giving them to me! :p )
Incidently, I _love_ ubook, it's now my favourite reader, followed equally in second place by isilo and mobipocket reader. I just wish isilo had a landscape option.
Craig.
Alexander Turcic 09-07-2004, 07:51 PM That's great, Craig! Lemme change the first post again... ;)
If I counted correctly, we now have 16 out of 22 invites left. This is your chance, if you don't have an Gmail e-mail yet.
Colin Dunstan 09-07-2004, 07:58 PM How long are you guys planning to keep this thread alive if you constantly add more and more invite giveaways ;)
My favorite reader is Plucker, because it is open-source and probably has the nicest output of html-converted documents. Followed by eBook Reader for $$-books
(no invite for me; I've won one in an earlier contest here ;))
blueberrycheese 09-08-2004, 01:25 AM TomeRaider is my favorite as the menu is intuitive. Its easy to create book marks and I like the customizable autoscroll.
But nothing beats Plucker for my HTML eBooks collection (and for offline reading too). Good features plus its free!
jryanlee80 09-08-2004, 02:12 AM I am using Isilo. :) It meets my requirements and expectations.
ignatz 09-08-2004, 05:33 AM As a Palm user I like Plucker the best for its great skill with fonts and its very intuitive category system. Followed closely by iSilo for its speed.
(no invite for me)
lzlasco 09-08-2004, 07:12 AM hello. i use palmreader because i am more at ease with the interface. since not all docs i want to read are available in palmreader format, i also use isilo which is fast and has many docs written for it.
btw, i'm interested in getting an email invite. :)
gadgetguru 09-08-2004, 09:19 AM I also don't need one since I already won one earlier but it seem the supply has now overtaken demand... Gmail must be close to shedding it 'beta' and its 'by invitation only' status...
Alexander Turcic 09-08-2004, 03:29 PM lzlasco, jryanlee80, blueberrycheese: please PM me your email where to send the invite to.
Still 13 Gmail invites are waiting for you! Use this thread if you are interested ;)
Alexander Turcic 09-08-2004, 03:33 PM Btw, one thing I like about eReader is its seamless integration of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (11th Ed). Since English is not my first language, it is often quite helpful to lookup the definition of a word when reading a book.
Another reader that offers the real Merriam-Webster is MobiPocket.
johng 09-08-2004, 05:15 PM I like iSilo the best. It reads all my doc files, plus web-pages. With the latest improvements, the program is getting better every day. It even has the desktop program for the PC and Mac.
Unregistered 09-08-2004, 08:26 PM I use mobipocket. It's quite easy to use.
Hope the invitation to gmail is still open. Thank you.

lzlasco 09-08-2004, 09:23 PM lzlasco, jryanlee80, blueberrycheese: please PM me your email where to send the invite to.
just did. thanks again! :)
Traecer Prime 09-09-2004, 07:16 AM I'm also a heavy user of iSilo/iSiloX (great for offline HTML reading!) and eReader (love the highlighting and note features).
I love WordSmith (by Blue Nomad (http://www.bluenomad.com)) for reading and editing Word documents. WordSmith is a joy to use for large documents, and I love its FineType font technology. I just wish Blue Nomad would update it to support images and tables.
I've recently tried RepliGo (http://www.cerience.com/), and I'd have to say it is excellent, as well. It is mainly billed as a PDF reader, but its converter is set up as a printer in Windows, so you can convert any document you can print. It supports bookmarks, notes, and highlighting, plus it has a variety of display features, including excellent zooming capability, landscape support, virtual input area support on Palms, and a text-only mode. Plus, there are viewers available for Palm OS, Symbian, PocketPC, and Windows. RepliGo's only problems are that it only supports its own document format, and the converter isn't cheap; though the viewers are free, the converter is $29.95. If I had a lot of PDFs to view on my Palm, however, I'd probably go ahead and swallow that hefty price, for RepliGo is vastly superior to Adobe's own Reader for Palm OS.
I hate the Adobe Reader for Palm OS. It's a bloated, ancient mess that needs to be thrown away. This thing was a terrible pain when it was introduced; it was huge for a Palm app, and the old m68k-based Palms of the day couldn't run it well. It has never gotten any better, really. It still has no bookmarking, highlighting, or note capabilities. It has no real font capabilities, and its handling of images is kludgy ("tap and hold to see the full-size image"). And this is all when I can get it to work; the program remains largely incompatible with palmOne's Tungsten T3. On the T3, the app most often skips over sections of text on a page, there are screen refresh issues, and frequent crashes. Plus, the desktop converter is a miserable experience. It requires Adobe Reader 6.0 on the desktop now (which is its own bit of bloated mess), always complains about the PDFs in question not being "tagged PDFs" (I have yet to see one of those), and inexplicably makes the resulting PDB file bigger than the original, though large portions of the formatting information was supposedly removed. IMNSHO, the Adobe Reader for Palm OS is virtually useless. I hope the Adobe's Readers for PocketPC and Symbian are better.
hannah71188 09-09-2004, 08:37 AM i use the plain vanilla palmreader. i guess i'm not the sophisticated type of a palm person. for my simple ebook reading needs, palmreader proves adequate so far. and by the way, i'm interested in getting a gmail invite! :) -- in case i qualify, my email address is hannah71188@hotmail.com thanks in advance!!
elise10189 09-09-2004, 08:43 AM i have tried a few readers like palmreader, isilo, and plucker. those are the ones i can recall. plucker has many features which i don't use, thus for me it is either isilo or palmreader. i'd like to get a gmail invite too! merci. :)
doctorow 09-09-2004, 02:58 PM I like iSilo + eReader best. One for reading offline html pages, the other for reading full e-books.
No invite for me; already found one here before.
Francesco 09-09-2004, 04:16 PM I like iSilo + eReader best. One for reading offline html pages, the other for reading full e-books.
I use iSilo for everything.
Doctorow, why do you prefer eReader for full e-books?
Is it because of the e-books you can buy? Or the interface itself has an advantage?
Although I might be switching soon, though. This Sunshine (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2218&highlight=sunrise) stuff seems very attractive.
Alexander Turcic 09-10-2004, 08:07 AM OK some of you already PMed me, some didn't. Trying hard not to lose track! johng, Heidi, Traecer Prime, hannah71188, elise10189 please PM me your e-mail address where I can send the invite to.
That means we should have eight Gmail invites left, each waiting for a new Gmail account owner ;)
Sunish 09-10-2004, 09:21 PM I use mobipocket, it downloads all my news and with office companion , it can convert any MS Office document into a reader file and send it to my phone to read later.
Chaos 09-21-2004, 01:25 AM Eh, might as well voice my eccentric tastes for a Gmail invite. ;P
Personally I use QT/Opie Reader on my SL-5600 Zaurus (Linux-based; almost a pocket computer ;) ), with Plucker as the main format I use.
Why? Well, there are many books available in the Plucker format (through several sites, including http://manybooks.net), as well as being able to take HTML news feeds (i.e. Slashdot, etc.), and turn them into nice sized packages for reading. It's open source (for a FOSS [Free/Open Source Software] geek like myself, that's a real bonus), and has no DRM/copy protection on it, as there are no DRM-able readers for the Zaurus.
As for why QT/Opie Reader as the viewer... Well, it's simply the best one for the Zaurus, with only a few others available.
Alexander Turcic 09-21-2004, 03:04 AM Of those who answered in this thread but haven't received his or her invite yet, please PM me your e-mail address.

Unregistered 11-02-2004, 08:20 PM Can somebody send me a gmail invite to:
brianez21 @ netscape.net
thanks so much!
also: my favorite book is The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman
Actually, I like the whole series, but I enjoy that perticular book because of how Will uses the knife. It is interesting and sometimes I think about what littles things could have been diffrent, and how the whole story can change.
It just is facinating! :)
Unregistered 11-02-2004, 08:21 PM (this is from: brianez21 @ netscape.net )

Alexander Turcic 11-11-2004, 07:19 AM Please don't post your e-mail here in public, because it is a sure way of getting massive spam. You must register here and then send a PM to the person who is still offering an invite.

cbarnett 12-07-2004, 04:59 PM Sorry, I'm all out as well, and Google haven't seen fit to issue me with any more (that may mean they have enough "testers", or might be getting close to the end of the beta period, or both! :) )
Craig.
