View Full Version : Multi IPDF installer for 2.12
daudi 02-11-2008, 02:13 PM This is a set of installers for different versions of the ipdf viewer. It also includes a way of examining which version is currently installed (by examining the file size). Just click on the "Run me to identify the current ipdf" entry in the contentlister.
To use this set of installers:
make sure you have upgraded to version 2.12 of the iliad software
make sure that you have requested shell access (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17342) (again if you had it before with 2.11 and then upgraded to 2.12)
Unzip this set of installers somewhere, anywhere that you can access with the contentlister.
click on the entry for the version you want
click on "Run me to identify the current ipdf"
Here are the links to the original posts by the people who created these versions. These posts include more details about the features that each version offers:
Mike Kostousov's bookmarks (includes fullscreen mode) (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13914)
jharker's fullscreen (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14915)
alanine's continuous columns mode (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19610). This set of installers uses this version (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=186212&postcount=13)
wpd's column-wise mode (http://forum.irexnet.com/viewtopic.php?t=1953)
rincewind's gestures (includes fullscreen mode) (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=111994&postcount=36). Long/short presses described here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=111678&postcount=3)
gmt's 'for editing' version (includes fullscreen mode) (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=95755&postcount=38)
Please note that the installers check to see which version of the firmware your iliad is running. The current version of the firmware for the iLiad V1 and iLiad V2 is 2.12. The new iLiad Book Edition runs version 2.12.1. You will need to select the correct set of installers for the version installed on your iLiad.
Specical note for Book Edition owners
Please note that this over-writes the installed version of ipdf. In the 2.12 bundle I have included the iRex version for 2.12 so it can be restored. I do not have the 2.12.1 version (which might be exactly the same, I don't know) so I have included the 2.12 version with the 2.12.1 bundle.
I have also created a contentlister entry that will backup the installed ipdf. You can only run this once. I suggest that Book Edition users who have not yet installed any of the community ipdf versions use this option to backup their own Book Edition ipdf before installing any community versions. Once you have run this the contentlister entry will change and will show the file size of the backed-up version.
Once you have done this the contentlister entry to restore the iRex original ipdf will restore the original that came with your Book Edition and not the 2.12 version.
Even better still, if someone with a Book Edition who has not yet installed any community versions of ipdf could use the backup to determine the file size and then post that file size below it will help to determine whether ipdf has changed in version 2.12.1.
The backup is safe to run: it will do nothing to your iliad, it just copies the installed version to the set of installers.
Adam B. 03-21-2008, 10:53 AM Daudi, I've copied your post into the software releases forum so it's easy for everyone to find.

Belated thanks for doing this. I've updated it now to include links to the original posts for each version.
cnbcad 05-23-2008, 05:20 PM why can't these be written into one? wouldn't that be much more convenient and sensible?

The response you'd get from a mailing list for some other open source software I use a lot would be something like "Sure, it would be great, and we look forward to receiving your patches", i.e. someone's got to do it. Each of these variants has been provided by someone who had an itch to scratch, but it needs someone who needs all of these features and is able to code in C++ and has the time to do it. It is possible that some of the changes conflict with each other so it is possibly not just a matter of applying all of the patches one after another. But I don't know C++ so I can't say for sure. If you do know C++ perhaps you could review the source code diffs and see if they are likely to merge nicely.
akiburis 05-23-2008, 11:51 PM I just got the iLiad Book Edition. Almost the first thing I wanted to do was to install the fullscreen ipdf. The 12.2.1 installer bundle is exactly what I needed--great that it was here. Thanks so much!
salbeik 05-25-2008, 03:13 AM Hi
When I want to Draw I am not moving the pen as fast as when I am writing. Even when I am moving the pen (slowly) it still thinks that I am holding it still and erases the line, which is very annoying.
Try to move the pen slowly over the screen - sometimes it even makes a dashed line. It does not do this with the ipdf from iRex.
Using the 2.21.1 version on a iRex iLiad Book edition
daudi 05-27-2008, 07:04 PM I've updated the installers to include rincewind's gestures version and gmt's 'for editing' version. Note that I have not done the Book Edition (2.12.1) versions yet, but should do soon.
The tool for showing which version is currently installed is now a little more intelligent and tells you which version is installed rather than making you compare file sizes.
daudi 05-28-2008, 03:12 AM I've now updated the installers for 2.12.1
Dabon 05-28-2008, 03:34 AM Hi Daudi,
Thanks a million for all your hard work compiling these softwares.
I am not going to complain..I promise...:)
I have a technical question for you. I had previously installed the third party ipdf 2.12 (iliad version 2) from this forum, so far it is working great and I have full screen as well as column wise (that I don't know how to used properly...). I was wondering if the installer package that you are offering today will automatically overwrite the already installed ipdf 2.12, or I will have to do additional manual removal...
I was also wondering in what order should I install the different softwares included in this package (a couple of them have the fullscreen mode incorporated...could that be a problem???)
I really don't want to mess up what I have which is already working great, so I will really appreciate your time to give me some step by step instructions...
Thanks again a bunch for all your great contributions on this forum...I am enjoying my iliad so much because of you guys....I just can't leave without it anymore...:thanks:
D.
daudi 05-28-2008, 03:50 AM Hi Dabon,
Thanks for the appreciation, but the real work was done by those who created each of these community versions.
These installers are actually very simple. All they do is copy a community version of ipdf over the default iRex version. This means that you cannot have multiple versions installed at the same time. All this set of installers does is make it easier to switch between the different versions, by copying across the version you have chosen. The links at the top of the thread show the original posts from which the versions have come.
There should be no harm at all in switching between each version depending on your needs. One difference you might see is that gmt's "for editing" version is based on slightly older ipdf code and does not have the forward and back buttons (it might also be missing some other features as well, but I have not noticed).
cnbcad 05-30-2008, 04:20 AM The response you'd get from a mailing list for some other open source software I use a lot would be something like "Sure, it would be great, and we look forward to receiving your patches", i.e. someone's got to do it. Each of these variants has been provided by someone who had an itch to scratch, but it needs someone who needs all of these features and is able to code in C++ and has the time to do it. Yes, I realize that. My suggestion was not original however. There have been threads that suggested this was in the works some time ago. I just wondered the status; perhaps I should have said so, but it's kind of rude for a freeloader to ask 'hey where's that work you posted about.' :)
No C++ sorry to say. Did Cobal Fortran some Assembly. Learned Pascal, Asa ect. Haven't done any for quite a while; disabled now and tends to interfere with mental processes. Can't do lots of stuff I used to. :(
zerospinboson 06-06-2008, 06:44 AM i don't know who designed the auto-eraser function (thanks a million for that?),
but i've noticed the 'eraser' function of the pen doesn't work very well, or at least the screen doesn't update in about 50% of the cases, when i'm working in the top or bottom 2-3cm of the screen.
it's generally after flipping a page that this starts (it works fairly reliably when you first open a file, and also works most of the time after you display and hide the menu buttons bar), but it's somewhat annoying (i'm working in zoomed-in fullscreen mode in the bookmarks iPDF version)
engunneer 06-10-2008, 02:10 AM Hi, I've installed your package to my CF card (/newspapers/Programs/iPDF Chooser/), but am having some trouble. I can see all your install icons, but they don't seem to work for me. the screen flashes, then nothing happens (even for the ipdf detection script). If I load up mrxvt, I can cd over to the right folder (editing, for example), and run ./install_ipdf.sh. This works, but is somewhat tedious. Any hints on what I am doing wrong? I'm running 2.12 on a V1 iLiad.
Thanks for all the great work!
Edit: On a whim, I tried renaming the folder to have no spaces. All is well.
Hi,
Has somebody tried to make a search engine ? I would be great !!! :)
Dabon 06-18-2008, 03:36 PM I second this request Kran!!
Thanks,
dabon.
cloud9 07-05-2008, 06:47 PM I have installed all these installers after having had a lot of problems.
The issue was that I have upgraded to 2.12, but I did not know that
I had to redownload the developer pack.
I have tried the full screen, however, when I pressed the up arrow for a long time
and the released. The light keeps on blinking. Can someone tell me why I
can not return to previous with the tool bar appearing at the bottom of the screen?
tikitu 07-31-2008, 10:50 AM Thanks heaps to all the developers, you guys are awesome!
I got myself instantly confused with the various long and short button presses, what mode am I in now, how does that one work again? So here are the collected interfaces of 'em all. (I've just pulled these from the various forum posts, hope they're up to date -- everything I've tried works like a charm.)

daudi 08-01-2008, 05:37 AM Thank you! This is very helpful.
booklover 08-03-2008, 09:51 AM It seems those ipdfs do not support Chinese language display.
romanas 09-11-2008, 02:37 PM One question - I can use just one mode at a time and i need to activate ipdf wich i need from ipdf installers??? am i right?
jrial 09-11-2008, 04:59 PM Yes, that's correct. Every "mode" is a different version of the iPDF application, and you choose which one you wish to run through the "iPDF Installers" application.
ericshliao 09-16-2008, 06:21 PM It seems those ipdfs do not support Chinese language display.
I don't see your problem on my iLiad. I have used those varied ipdf build to read pdf files with Chinese text.
booklover 09-19-2008, 04:22 AM I don't see your problem on my iLiad. I have used those varied ipdf build to read pdf files with Chinese text.
But the chinese pdf didn't show up correctly in my case. Is it because it wasn't a chinese pdf with embeded fonts? but the official ipdf can display them all right. BTW, my iliad is the Chinese version. Does it make any difference?
rosrog 10-03-2008, 01:15 PM Hello , could anyone guide me on how to change the firmware_SCRIPT of the iliad 2v from 2.11 to 2.12. I'm trying to install minimo. Thanks in advance.
wallcraft 10-04-2008, 12:08 PM Hello , could anyone guide me on how to change the firmware_SCRIPT of the iliad 2v from 2.11 to 2.12. I'm trying to install minimo. Use a text editor to change the contents of the file Firmware_Script (in directory minimoinst) from 2.11 to 2.12. Under Windows you can use Notepad to do this.
I have seen some posts where 2.12.1 was required instead of 2.12. On my iLiad, the last page of the Settings says 2.12 for "Software Version" but I don't know if that would say 2.12.1 if I had 2.12.1 installed or not.
zerospinboson 10-10-2008, 04:12 PM I just received a PDF (very recently created by Cambridge UP) that constantly crashes on all iPDF versions, even though the PDF contains no images, and doesn't require the iLiad to do any heavy rendering.
All it contains are lots of bookmarks throughout the PDF (also on pages in the 'book' to other chapters in the book, which can be 'clicked' in the text body of the book itself), and "linked" footnotes.
I have created similar (linked footnote) PDFs myself, and they don't cause the iLiad any trouble at all rendering them.
Does anyone have a clue why this might be happening?
The kinds of pages it crashes on frequently seem to be pages containing such links, though the amount of them seems to matter very little, and it happens on pages without them as well. (if it would help, i can send the file causing the problems to someone who can do more by way of testing/debugging than I can.
Update: it only happens when i update the PDF version to PDF 1.7 or later (using Acrobat 9)
If I leave the file as conforming to the PDF 1.4 standard, it is fine, but as soon as i upgrade, it starts acting up bigtime.
zerospinboson 10-15-2008, 01:12 PM ...
Anyone?

It's likely a problem with the PDF library the iLiad uses.
It appears to be fixed in a new version of the library, but someone from the community will have to build it along with a new version of the pdf viewer.
PS. (File is copyrighted, so i can't post it anywhere directly)
Adam B. 10-15-2008, 01:15 PM Could it be iPDF is trying to cache all the pages that those bookmarks link to?
Anyone?:help:
If you can post the PDF, we can take at the output from the crash. Otherwise, it's hard to say what the problem could be.
-Thomas- 02-18-2009, 06:49 AM Hey,
see attached the Book Edition original ipdf viewer (82828 Bytes). Maybe you can include it in your distribution?
DesiLinguist 02-25-2009, 04:40 PM Ok. I have created a new version of the all-in-one installer which contains the 2.12.1 version as the default iRex version. It also contains another version called 'fullscreen-nojump' which is identical to jharker's fullscreen version except that the 5-page jump that was activated by a long flip has been removed. I created this because I was a little tired of the flipbar doing 5 page turns when I only wanted one. I think a few other people might find this useful. This version was graciously produced by Fellbell and all I did was strip the binary produced by him so that it was of a smaller size (the original binary he produced was 1.1MB!).
As before, please do backup your current ipdf before installing anything.
Dabon 02-25-2009, 06:43 PM Thank you very much Deslinguist, for your compilation.
A couple of questons:
1. Will it be possible to replace the default irex version of your package (2.12.1 for Book edition), with the Default irex version for the previous Multi IPDF installer for 2.12 for Iliad V2
2. Are the other pdf applications included in your package compatible with Iliad V2 or rather compatible with 2.12.1 Book edition Software.
Thank you,
Dabon.
DesiLinguist 02-25-2009, 07:10 PM Dabon,
The 2.12 ipdf binary is also included in the package in case someone (like you) wants it. Look under the 'iRex' folder. I have renamed it to 'ipdf_2_12'. If you want to make that the default version, just rename the 'iRex/ipdf' to 'iRex/ipdf_2_12_1' and then rename 'iRex/ipdf_2_12' to 'iRex/ipdf'.
All of the other ipdfs should run on both v2 and the book edition.
Dabon 02-26-2009, 11:28 AM Thank you Desilinguist!
D.
foxql 03-28-2009, 11:29 AM i used this soft for a few days
it's so great!
thanks!
but there is one question: when i added a bookmark, it will show me a blank bookmark, and i can't add a sign on it
which i used is book edition ,and i installed the zip for book edition.
herbalist 04-13-2009, 03:48 PM thanks for making this available easily!
zerospinboson 05-27-2009, 05:13 PM Does anyone know why all iPDF versions are so inaccurate (using the stylus) on the part of the screen where the menu normally sits?
I generally hide the menu, but drawing any lines there is very awkward, whereas in the Notes thing the stylus works just fine there. How hard would it be to fix that, or doesn't it bother anyone beside me? :P
rhari79 05-28-2009, 12:48 PM Hi All,
This has possibly been answered already, but please do help me out in this:
IS there a version of pdf reader that can give me progressive or incremental zoom? somewhat like the pViewer, but without reflow such that it works on pics also?
I have several pdfs which are scanned and hence contains no text. only pics of text in each page. Reflow doesnt work on these and I can see a lot of white space around the edges.
An incremental zoom could cut out the whitespace and zero in on the page stretching it and making it more readable.
As a possible approach(and to make a debut into some iliad dev work), I have been able to make a simple blind port of xpdf to the iliad.
This is currently dead slow, but works, and with lots of led flashes etc., and only stylus input works mostly.
This gives me a zoom select list box and doesnt reflow. A little mod of the src to remove the print func and reuse this to call the file open has helped me making it more useful.
I am looking for a better alternative...Any suggestions?
TIA..hari
iamfrombeijing 09-10-2009, 12:22 AM Dear sir,
thank you so much for your efforts to deal with the 5-page flip problem. but it seems that you used the ipdf for iliad book edition. I cannot install the nojump version on my iliad 2 machine. but i can install normal non-nojump 2.12 version softwares.
could you design a nojump version for iliad 2 machines? I am really frustrated by the problem. Thank you very much!!!
Max from Beijing
Ok. I have created a new version of the all-in-one installer which contains the 2.12.1 version as the default iRex version. iamfrombeijing 09-10-2009, 01:25 AM Dear sir,
I have done so accordingly, but still cannot install other ipdfs....
Don't know what's wrong.
Thanks!
Max
Dabon,
The 2.12 ipdf binary is also included in the package in case someone (like you) wants it.
All of the other ipdfs should run on both v2 and the book edition.
nekokami 09-12-2009, 10:12 PM The response you'd get from a mailing list for some other open source software I use a lot would be something like "Sure, it would be great, and we look forward to receiving your patches", i.e. someone's got to do it. I don't know C++ either, but I'd be willing to contribute to a fund to hire someone who knows what they're doing to merge these. Maybe one of the creators of one of these versions? Who's still around?
it would be very great if someone with an already installed compilation environment could add a nojump-patched version of alanine's continuous columns mode version plus the patch suggested in the thread http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=367499&postcount=1 . i for one would be most grateful!
